A vociferous campaigner for repeal the 8th campaign, Bernie Linnane, posted just now referring to JK Rowling as an "old trout", and freely admitted she has blocked people from the ARC twitter page, even though that page is a very useful source of info for anyone looking for advice on a termination. So in summary a woman makes derogatory comments about a someone's appearance, and decides that women who do not agree with her are not entitled to access information.

I don't disagree about the dangers of legislation and perhaps in a couple of years time we will have hundreds of damaged children. I was hoping that the whole movement would run out steam before we get to that point. I am horrified about the disturbed males in Limerick's women's prison alright. I will shortly be emailing my TDs re this.

SunsetBeetch · 07/03/2021 17:03

Wow. Disgusting.

irishfeminist · 07/03/2021 17:01

Cailleach that person is American and hasn't a fkn clue about our history but lectures us from on high about it every day. Completely and utterly unhinged.

I wish they could have that IWD event live, it'd look like the cantina scene in Star Wars.

@purplepizzabunny

Abortion rights campaign. Set up a few years ago during the repeal campaign and now pretty much a trans rights vehicle
Are they doing anything in relation to the low take up by GPs in Ireland and the strict enforcement of the 12 week rule?

Or the fact that even after legalisation that prior to lockdown there was still more than 1 women per day travelling to England for an abortion.

Ninkanink · 07/03/2021 16:49

It’s truly horrendous. Solidarity to the many women who are being, and will be, so badly affected by this. I’m angry on your behalf, and I’ll never stop being angry! They don’t frighten me.

Cailleach1 · 07/03/2021 16:44

The problem is that the legislation which dismantles women's sex based rights is in place. An avenue which can be used by any male who so wishes. What about when more men who are convicted of sex or violent crimes become aware of their need to just sign off their change of sex. What about the women who are forced to be exposed to them in prison.

Or someone elderly or disabled receiving intimate care who is told the person she recognises as a 'man' is legally a woman and stop being so bigoted.

That is the tip of it. Sports, education, discomfort day in and day out in spaces where you want safety, privacy and dignity. Women and girls have rights to parity of esteem and fairness.

I think some of the people at the gender clinics in the UK and elsewhere were saying there were so few girls a decade ago and now it has exploded.

Think of how many children in Ireland went through their schooling taught by the religious in the past. The numbers of abuse and abusers may have been relatively small, but we don't think it was ok because of that. One of the terms of reference of the Ferns Inquiry was about improving safeguarding for children. To lessen the potential for abuse to take place.

I think we have to ask why it was deemed appropriate to have rules for safety and safeguarding. Then ask why someone should be exempted from any gatekeeping on their say so.

elgreco · 07/03/2021 16:21

I am curious to know how much has infiltrated actual society outside of Twitter ...etc. I live in SD in very middle class (liberal area) area. I have a fair few kids so have had interactions with numerous schools over the years. I have yet to come across a trans kid. It seems that despite all the nonsense it may be passing them by. Or am I being ridiculously hopeful?

Monicuddle · 07/03/2021 14:54

I wonder if there’s a link to the Irish social democrats. They used to be a respectable party challenging FF and FG and actively campaigning for abortion rights, same sex marriage, justice for laundries survivors and now all their energy seems to be focused on ‘trans rights’. Anyone who raised so much as an eyebrow was publicly shamed and shunned on social media. Since these are the active campaigners and they filtered out anyone GC, there is now a trans slant on everything they do and their former allies are shut out. I think they’ve hurt themselves in the process though. There’s only so many voters that will encourage this.

MissBarbary · 07/03/2021 14:41

@EarringsandLipstick

And whilst abortion is legal in Ireland it's still inaccessible due to a lack of clinic providing the service right?

Just to correct this - no, it's not inaccessible. Services are available via GPs & hospitals, as permitted under law.

Abortion is now provided by more than 300 GPs and ten out of 19 maternity hospitals in the country

It is estimated that there are more than 2,500 GPs in Ireland

So 88% of GPs and 48% of maternity hospitals are not providing abortion.

notyourhandmaid · 07/03/2021 14:30

There's a big difference between putting your activism within a broader context, and having your International Women's Day event be about something else within that context, and not your stated primary purpose and the reason people support you. If the founders of the campaign want to redirect their energies to a different cause, they should be upfront and transparent about this.

FionaMacCool · 07/03/2021 14:12

I found the link to this from ARC's Twitter page.

www.abortionrightscampaign.ie/2021/03/06/lets-talk-about-bodily-autonomy-trans-healthcare-and-the-fight-for-reproductive-justice/

" the Bell ruling is an attack on the right to bodily autonomy. Bodily autonomy is not just the right to decide to continue or end a pregnancy – it is the right to make our own decisions about what happens to our bodies. Of course, these decisions should be informed and consent freely given – and the best way to ensure informed decision making is to provide people with information and time. Limited services with long waiting lists restrict information and time for decision-making. "

I actually agree with this (the concept of bodily autonomy and how it relates to pregnancy care)..... up to the point where it's about minors who are making life-time, life-altering decisions with unquestioning support from adults.
In any medical field, the possibility of alternative diagnoses is always considered.
Particularly in psycho-social care, where family systems, social contagion, abuse/neglect or other factors, may be part of the presenting issue.

highame · 07/03/2021 14:10

I am trying to work out how the capture happened? It seems bizarre that ALL are transwomen, or are there biological women in the organisation. A couple of years ago this would have seemed unbelievable but now.....

Abitofalark · 07/03/2021 13:20

What does ARC stand for?
I don't have access to twitter, in case it is explained there.

Lochmorlich · 07/03/2021 12:50

Amusingly her twitter profile has #fuck the patriarchy.

purplepizzabunny · 07/03/2021 12:01

Cailleach just saw that rant myself. Increasingly deranged.

OP posts:
Cailleach1 · 07/03/2021 11:44

Shouldn't have looked, but went to see some interactions on twitter. I don't have an a/c but can have a gander. A transwoman communicating with this organisation states a couple of unusual views.

One, that they are concerned about this issue in the same way all women who can't get pregnant are. Hmm.

No. I don't think women's reproduction system applicable there..

Two, 'If they had their way, we'd be side by side in the * Laundry'.

No. Men or Transwomen weren't incarcerated or brutalised in those Laundries. Only women. Babies and young children suffered, among them boys. They lacked protection because they were the children of the women who were brutalised and incarcerated. They were left vulnerable. Made vulnerable because their mothers were put in a situation where they couldn't protect them.. The women were deemed to be 'bad' according to a men centred ideology. An ideology which protected men first and foremost; in all their guises. Now the powers that be have imported a new version of it and are determined to lay women low again.

notyourhandmaid · 07/03/2021 11:36

There are still difficulties with accessing abortion depending on where in the country you live, and women still travelling abroad in some circumstances.

The misogynistic language of Irish abortion-rights campaigners of the past while is so depressing.

FionaMacCool · 07/03/2021 10:50

Why, in the name of all that is holy, are an organisation named Abortion Rights, focussing on barriers to care for trans people.

Now, I am sure, monitors, there are barriers in place for trans-health care. However, abortion in Ireland, was only signed into law in December 2018. That's just over 2 years ago.
I am equally sure, without spending a long time looking into it, that, there must be hiccups in implementing fair, equitable, widely available, non-shaming access to quality abortion services around the country.

Surely, surely, that would be the primary focus of any "abortion rights" organisation.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/03/2021 10:16

It sounds like an organisation women need to go round rather than through.

XXSex · 07/03/2021 10:11

Am signed up to both! Really looking forward to it

Cailleach1 · 07/03/2021 09:51

I wouldn't be clicking into that at all. If you want to support women, better to sign up to 'The Countess didn't fight for this' webinar at 2-5pm.

or/and

'The Irish Women's Lobby' webinar, from 6:30-8:30pm.
