A vociferous campaigner for repeal the 8th campaign, Bernie Linnane, posted just now referring to JK Rowling as an "old trout", and freely admitted she has blocked people from the ARC twitter page, even though that page is a very useful source of info for anyone looking for advice on a termination. So in summary a woman makes derogatory comments about a someone's appearance, and decides that women who do not agree with her are not entitled to access information.

@FionaMacCool

miri those are 2 separately concerning issues aren't they?
I sit on the board of a (very very small) charity organisation. Item 1 at the AGM each year, is the accountants report. A bit of consternation a couple of years ago when the rules for charities changed, as we had to be registered and audited. The question is then, if we (tiny charity) can do it annually, why cant TENI?
  1. If I remember correctly, there is a young NUIG (female) student who stood up to that particular "character" against his motion to ban the IWL. Buala bas to that brave lady.
That female student is outstanding. She is really calling them out on their hypocrisy too.

Saw on twitter ( twitter.com/HelenTerfSwerf/status/1375020092128432135 ) that there was an article in The Phoenix about TENI's accounts, apparently Ronan Mullen (ugh) raised it in the Oireachtas. Also they mention the IT letters

Also NUIG is trending on twitter becaused the vice auditor of PBP (the party who last month wanted to ban certain feminist groups) has been accused of sexual assault ( twitter.com/PBP_NUIG/status/1378834330571698178 )

@3timeslucky

Dochas has mothers with young children. I guess they can’t put the paedophiles in there

On one of the IWD conference pieces it was said that at one stage one of these prisoners was in Dochas. Gearoid O'Loinsigh was explaining why the layout of that prison is not suitable for any kind of separation/segregation of prisoners.

Shock Those poor mothers.

@Barmbraic

Journal.ie doesn't allow comments for their regular transwoman contributior either

I don't read it that often, the app was shit when I had it so I deleted it and got out of the habit of checking the Web page. Who is the trans contributer? AM?

Yes.

There were a few replies. The first couple complaining about paedos in general, the judge's weird comments and then people who had read all the way through started complaining about men in female jails and skewing the stats. They were all removed shortly after.

@Barmbraic

Is it just me or are there no comments under that journal article? That's unusual...

@elgreco

Limerick jail is for both sexes interestingly. Separated no doubt. I wonder if its deliberate choice to house these prisoners here so they have wardens that can cope with violent men on hand? And space to segregate them out if necessary?

Just saw your post Turquoise - so numbers are even more skewed. And isn't it only TW with a GRC that are housed in the women's prisons? So would seem likely a significant percentage of legally recognised "women" have committed serious crimes, either violent or of a sexual nature, or both.

LurkyMcLurkLurk · 25/03/2021 20:37

I can't find current figures but per the Irish Penal Reform Trust the average number of women in custody in Irish prisons in 2019 was 170. Unless numbers changed hugely that means currently nearly 2.5% the population of Irish women's prisons are trans.

Could suggest a rate of criminal offending more aligned to that of the male prison population? Especially as all 4 have been convicted of much more serious crimes than most female inmates.

www.thejournal.ie/women-prison-ireland-petty-crime-4596708-Apr2019/

95% of women given prison sentences in Ireland are there for petty crimes.

As of yesterday www.irishprisons.ie/wp-content/uploads/documents_pdf/25-March-2021.pdf there were 117 women in Dochas (Mountjoy) and 27 in Limerick, 144 in total in the whole of Ireland, the vast majority of whom are petty criminals, usually coming from abusive backgrounds and caught up with drugs and petty theft.

The numbers are tiny. Four men being counted as women really skews the figures.

elgreco · 25/03/2021 20:18

In fairness, no I am not certain, I got that info from the comments. Quite a few people seemed to know but all the comments have been deleted since.

LurkyMcLurkLurk · 25/03/2021 19:57

Are they definitely in Limerick? Isn't the capacity there only 28?

elgreco · 25/03/2021 19:31

Journal.ie ...... I knew the second I saw the headline that it was a man.

elgreco · 25/03/2021 19:29

Another sex offending Male identities as a women. Now 3 of 4 males in Limerick prison are sex offenders.

XXSex · 23/03/2021 07:49

Now we need more discourse on the ground. Spread the word.

saltedcaramelchocolate · 23/03/2021 07:17

That's a great letter. Yes, it's good to see the Times publishing these letters.

FionaMacCool · 23/03/2021 07:00

Yes, another great letter- well done to the IT for allowing the debate and not being captured so far.

miri1985 · 23/03/2021 05:10

Another great letter, kind of surprised they're allowing so much back and forth

miri1985 · 22/03/2021 22:15

Also lets not forget that what was brought in was wildly different from what the Gender Recognition Advisory Group recommended, they recommended a law similar to the UK one which would at least have had some form of gatekeeping for a certain individual we can think of in Limerick prison.

I expect someday some unfortunate Barrister for the government will have to explain why they went against their own advisory group
