article by Lucy Bannerman
(extract)
"A victim of domestic abuse was removed as a judge of a radical thinking prize and “hounded” out of her role within the Liberal Democrats for saying that she did not believe that men who identified as women should have access to women’s refuges.

Natalie Bird, 38, a mother of two who fled an abusive former partner, was accused of “dangerous transphobia” by transgender activists in the party. She had said that opening up safe spaces without proper safeguards to anyone who said that they were female could put women at risk.

She opposed segregating women’s refuges by chosen gender instead of biological sex, and said that it was not fair to make female victims of domestic violence, abuse and rape share services with people with “functioning” male anatomy.

After being allegedly bullied on social media by party activists, Ms Bird was brought before a disciplinary hearing to face a complaint in the name of Zoe O’Connell, on behalf of the LGBT+ Liberal Democrats. The correspondence says that Ms Bird had “expressed troublesome views”.

The hearing found no evidence to support the complaint of transphobia, but Ms Bird lost her position as chairwoman of the Radical Association, made up of party members, following a vote of no confidence. This cost her her role as a judge of the Ashdown Prize for Radical Thought; an ironic move, Ms Bird said, given that the prize’s aim was to reward “big, bold, radical” solutions to society’s most “daunting problems . . . no one has the courage to argue for” (continues)

Hopefully many LibDem Members will stand in support of Natalie Bird.

O'Connell and Brown make a mockery of the LibDem priciples and their bullying abusive behaviour has been allowed to run unchecked within the party.

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

Zoë is currently trying to think of a way to justify its entry into the T-VOX wiki, then cross reference it through all the other pages - that should bump up the Googlehits.

@annoyedally - your friends Sarah and Zoe seem lovely don't they?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/10/2018 13:43

I'm intrigued by the picture caption on the article:

Candidate Zoe O'Connell (left) used to be man. Sarah Brown (centre) is married to Sylvia Knight (right) and they now all live together in a three-bedroom home in Cambridge

Why is only one of the people named as "used to be a man"?

SmallButFierce · 19/10/2018 13:38

I used to vote Lib Dem but haven’t since the coalition and I don’t think I will do again after they’ve shown themselves to be a bunch of misogynists without capacity for critical thinking. Unfortunately the same goes for the Labour Party and the Greens so not sure who I’m going to vote for in future 😡

Sarah Brown's full post on coining a term for (their words) the 'smegma-like.. residue' belonging to a 'post operative trans woman' [still not sure how much is visible on those screenshots and I think it is important that this is shared to demonstrate the sort of person Brown is]:

Sarah Brown (auntysarah) wrote,2008-12-18 11:39:00

Coining Petty Neologisms for the Sisterhood

So there's this ex-US senator called Rick Santorum. For those unfamiliar with this "gentleman", he has expressed some pretty unsavoury views on homosexuality in the past, speaking out against the rights of consenting adults to have sex with whom they want, without interference, and associating homosexuality with certain"odd" sexual habits including bestiality. This may sound familiar.

Anyway, the story doesn't end there, because well-known gay sex-advice columnist (as in he's gay and he writes a sex advice column - the column isn't exclusivelyabout gay sex) Dan Savage, in the wake of this, managed to coin the word, "santorum" as shorthand for "that frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that issometimes the byproduct of anal sex". Since then, the neologism has become extremely popular on the Internet, displacing search results for the eponymousbigoted senator on a search engine near you.

I'm a fan of Dan Savage's podcast, even though he can be a bit clueless on trans issues when they come up, and I thoroughly approve of what he managed to do ingiving the English Language a word for something that was only describable in full (and not in polite company) before, especially when in doing so, he demonstrated such pwnage (the neologisms are coming thick and fast in this post).

Now, there is a point to all of this, and that's that there is no word in the English language, that I am aware of, for the smegma-like mixture of dead skin cells, gynaecological lube, stale urine (gives it its distinctive smell) and sweat that is sometimes present as a white residue on the end of a dilation stent when a post-operative trans woman withdraws the stent after dilating her neovagina.

I propose rectifying this linguistic oversight. I propose naming this mixture, "bindel".

All those in favour, say "Aye" (and better still, link to this post so that Google finds it).

I've voted for the Lib Dems more than for any other party. I'd already stopped voting for then nationally (they have good local councillors) due to their Brexit which, though a Leaver, I could at least understand politically.

On top of that, this whole thread is an illustration of their increasing illiberality which is all the more dumb because, if they neglect their liberal roots, they're just another left wing party and recent elections show that, if people want that, they'll vote Corbyn. On top of which their Brexit stance is hardly bearing fruit as they managed to lose ultra-Remain Richmond in 2017.

Recently on the Daily Politics, Isabelle Hardman asked Jo Swinson 'right now, what's the point of the Lib Dems?' and she has a point.

Will they be the next established party to fold?

I'd advise you to be more discerning about your choice of friend. But each to their own, I guess.

stillathing · 19/10/2018 13:26

ugh. voted lib dem in the generals once and several times in local elections. how embarrassing .

GrimDamnFanjo · 19/10/2018 13:25

And this is why i have also left the party...

Preston was a director of the Autistic Society of Greater Manchester but interestingly, resigned 11 days ago, according to Companies House.

Okay I'm a gc lib dem, newish to party but agree with them on lots apart from this so I don't just want to leave. My local branch is half a dozen blokes focused totally on Brexit. What can I do to register my dissent with this behavior?

Datun · 19/10/2018 13:22

I am astounded by the hate I read here for two people I am proud to call friends. Zoe & Sarah are decent hard working people, representing their local area as political activists and standing up for a fair, open and tolerant society. Whilst I expect this will draw the full weight of your wrath on me, I couldn't leave a thread with my friends names in it unchallenged.

Do you mean Sarah Brown who attempted to popularise the use of a prominent lesbian feminist's name as a stand in for (in Brown's words) "the smegma-like mixture of dead skin cells, gynaecological lube, stale urine (gives it its distinctive smell) and sweat that is sometimes present as a white residue on the end of a dilation stent when a post-operative trans woman withdraws the stent after dilating her neovagina"?

Ugh. Just ugh.

So @annoyedally - are these examples all from your friend Sarah Brown? Do you have anything you want to say about Brown's misogyny and lesbophobia? Will you be telling Brown how disappointing their behaviour is?

Note Zoe and Jenny both enjoying and commenting on the smegma thread pictured above. Are these the LibDemLGBT+'s Zoe O'Connell and Jennie Rigg?

Just to be factually accurate, Natalie has been hounded out of positions on committees and from several online LibDem groups, but they haven’t actually managed to get her kicked out of the party. She is still a member, and she is impressively loyal to them under the circumstances.

And to close the circle nicely, the April Preston mentioned upthread was one of the organisers of the “lesbians” protesting at the private women’s group meeting in Manchester last weekend. She is a close associate of O’Connell and Brown, and the whole bunch don’t share a single liberal bone between them.

@annoyedally - please come back! We have questions for you.

JoanSummers · 19/10/2018 13:16

@annoyedally

Do you mean Sarah Brown who uses their Twitter to make lesbian hating statements:

including that lesbian bodies are “off putting”, and “political lesbians must be sexually frustrated”, that he is a “better” lesbian than women because men “have longer fingers” (eww!), and telling lesbians to “suck my balls”

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 19/10/2018 13:11

Wow. The Lib Dems are just fucked, aren't they?

Yes. And the more the fuck themselves, the less electable they become. Keeping on fucking up, LibDems!

Hmm I suspect there is more to this story that hasn't been discussed (in terms of how the TRAs forced Natalie out).

9 November 2017:

Oliver Craven & Natalie Bird elected chairmen on 40% of the vote

Who is Luke Graham?

He's a TRA. Here he is showing off his transgender dungeons & dragons dice:

Here he is crowing about his 'progressive' purge of a woman and replacement with himself (pronouns: he/him) twitter.com/LD_LukeGraham/status/1042550386563809280

Here he is on how we need to protect the 'deadname' of rapists, murderers & other evil people.

Here he is being a vile misogynist

Brown has been a loud and proud misogynist lesbophobe for a long time. Perhaps you should consider what you condone when you defend Brown.
