"Lesbians, he says, are more sceptical"

Now, as a journalist in the LGBT+ sector, you would think that it might be of some minor interest as to why male homosexuals seem to be behaving slightly differently in this matter to female homosexuals? Might that not be worth thinking about for one teeny little moment? What is it about various calls for trans rights that means females might not be quite as happy as males over this matter?

Unless, of course, you have drank the wotsit so aren't allowed to think, even to yourself, of dividing the gay population by sex whilst at the same time retaining the same ole sexist bias against females that you possibly always had..........(by that I mean being silly women and liable to get hysterical and over-react over lots of things, or even, forsooth, be nasty feminists! I mean, they even objected to porn in the past, and how were gay men supposed to put up with that!).

Pratchet · 04/07/2018 13:55

Thank you

R0wantrees · 04/07/2018 13:50

See Erishgil's post on current thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a3296433-BBC-Bias-Collecting-Examples-here?msgid=79159455#79159455

"I reported the Sunday Politics show for bias for PN editor being allowed free rein with no balance from GC people.

I got back a condescending letter.
We aim to achieve due impartiality over a period of time and across our coverage; it’s not the case that every interviewee must appear alongside a contributor with the opposite viewpoint."

I think there is something substantive here. Yesterday, for example, Woman's Hour called for emails and letters from listeners about sex and gender for a series that is being aired in the Autumn.

R0wantrees · 04/07/2018 11:46

I think one can provide relevent information and identify the gaps in background knowledge research after all, they are all journalists involved.

If they have the additional information, this may will prompt further investigation and if they have the information and seem to ignore it, that's a whole different issue.

Pratchet · 04/07/2018 10:50

Rowan: yes, balance over time, so that reminding them when they are off whack means they have time to pick up and redress. I don't know what legal requirements Sky and ITV have for balance?

Angryresister · 04/07/2018 10:47

The same true of Woman's hour though at least feminists and lesbians objections were at least mentioned.

Angryresister · 04/07/2018 10:46

I watched this ...the only thing that surprised me was that he managed to spit out the word lesbians, and that we are "skeptical" . It would be good to inform him and Newsnight that we are a lot more than skeptical! Very unbalanced and completely biased reporting. Clear that the LBGT consultation results were being confused by and obscured the GRA consultation launch.

R0wantrees · 04/07/2018 09:58

Balance doesn't have to be in one segment.
There was of course none in this.

Pink News is partisan in this matter. There have been a number of propaganda pieces.

Benjamin Cohen framed women's concerns as misinformation and being anti-trans.

He reminded viewers that it was Pink News who hosted Theresa May.

Pink News and Stonewall's influence is clear.
In the last 48 hours BBC have given plenty of space to Paris Lees & Helen Belcher (Transmedia watch ) , and don't forget Mermaids too

I increasingly believe balance will be found over time, especially when questions are asked of the sources of power.

Pratchet · 04/07/2018 08:29

Wanderabout thanks. We need to log all of this. I'm going to get my stopwatch out.

Pratchet · 04/07/2018 08:26

I started a thread, if anyone is up for logging

Wanderabout · 04/07/2018 07:45

Yes and the BBC has a duty to present balanced viewpoints particularly on controversial issues.

therealposieparker · 04/07/2018 07:36

Weird when BBC bias is usually so checked, they feature climate change deniers every time some talks about oil FFS.

Wanderabout · 04/07/2018 00:12

It's worth watching Pratchet. I have rarely seen something so one sided. It was like a puff piece.

Newsnight know full well what they are doing and that there are two sides to this argument.

heresyandwitchcraft · 04/07/2018 00:09

Thanks for the responses. This is what I figured, because it surely must be much harder to exclude someone from a single sex space if they have a GRC. But the way these activists are spinning it, they make it sound like the simplest possible change in the birth certificate is ultra necessary for trans people, AND that women needn't be concerned. In other words, having a GRC either reinforces a trans person's claim on the spaces of the opposite sex, or it doesn't matter. Which means they need to start telling the truth about potential conflicts of interest, or they need to state that this whole consultation may not be needed because the paperwork they are pushing for is actually irrelevant.

Pratchet · 04/07/2018 00:09

I think Newsnight have their head screwed on. Sounds like a duty call to me.

Pratchet · 04/07/2018 00:06

This is why the Equalities people in the civil service (evening Ollie 'transadvocate' Entwistle) wanted the GRA consultation launch on the same day as the LGBT plan. It enables transadvocates to appear on TV without a balancing voice - because they're talking about an LGBT issue - and while in the chair, knock offer a few dismissive isive comments about the GRA - with no balancing voice. Neat trick, but if it was rushed by NN, does it seem like they were on to it? I haven't seen the segment.

Wanderabout · 04/07/2018 00:02

It was really shit journalism. Which is surprising because Evan Davis is a proper journalist and usually really good. And Newsnight know fine well about balancing voices.

OP posts:
greenlanes · 03/07/2018 23:57

Saw this interview totally by accident. Yes it did seem rushed. Benjamin whatever was skipping over any points that were controversial and not quite telling the truth on others.

thebewilderness · 03/07/2018 23:53

Currently it is possible to exclude transgenders from female only spaces. With streamlined process of getting documents that say female for persons with penis and balls it crates conditions whereby they cannot be told no when trying to access female only spaces.
If the ID says female you are breaking the law to deny them entry.

Wanderabout · 03/07/2018 23:51

Debbie Hayton has tweeted about this. I can't actually tweet at the moment but Editor of Newsnight is @esmewren if anyone wants to say something about the complete absence of even acknowledging an alternative view existed, let alone challenging the bollocks Mr Penis News came out with.

LastTrainEast · 03/07/2018 23:39

On what planet would someone have to be to NOT know about trans people in women's changing rooms etc

LastTrainEast · 03/07/2018 23:37

Personally I think you're supposed to ignore it as trivial and then wake up to find you have been legislated out of existence.

But they don't get together and agree a position so they contradict each other.

heresyandwitchcraft · 03/07/2018 23:34

Can I ask a daft question? Either the "paperwork" reform means absolutely nothing to trans people practically, and therefore we might ask why GRA reform must be forcefully pushed through like this, OR it could have significant impact on female spaces. The more trans activists talk, the more the whole process of transitioning actually does seem to affect single-sex facilities already... I'm never quite clear on what the actual TRA line is here.

LastTrainEast · 03/07/2018 23:30

dinosaursandtea so you agree that there's no question of trans people in womens changing rooms?
