Paris don't like freedom of speech.

"Everyone should feel safe..." says Paris.

Except females!

Lees is early 30s, hardly a kid.

The Female Eunuch is one of the best books I ever read.

The Poisonwood Bible comes a close second.

Both centre women at the core and both understand that women give and receive.

AnOpinion · 03/07/2018 17:51

Paris started off talking about LGBT, then reduced it to just GT, then spent most of the time talking about T.

OP posts:
Baroquehavoc · 03/07/2018 17:52

Paris is far, far from being a kid.

Doesn't like women having a voice though.

placemats · 03/07/2018 17:54

There are many gay men who cannot stand Paris Lees and hate the taking over of the T in the LGB. They see it, as do the L and the B as erasure of homosexuality.

AnOpinion · 03/07/2018 17:54

Paris was invited to talk about LGBT, not women Paris does not like, Paris also attacked the women's hour presenter.

By homo I mean men and women.

It's not an erasure of trans to say that though. But if there is one thing I detest it's homophobia.

placemats · 03/07/2018 17:59

Lees has been in prison and has been around for quite some time.

Would you believe that Alyson Hannigan of 'Buffy' and 'How I met your Mother' fame is 42?

Authoritarian as fuck. These kids are so narcissistic. - GardenGeek talking about Paris Lees

You don't think that some feminists struggle with some of the things Germaine Greer has said? 30+ years ago, I respected her. These days I categorically do not. For example, this turns me right off of her attitude:

"If you spread your legs because he [Harvey Weinstein] said 'be nice to me and I'll give you a job in a movie' then I'm afraid that's tantamount to consent, and it's too late now to start whingeing about that," Greer explained, before being honoured as Australian of the Year."

Greer’s Libertarian politics often put her at odds with those on the left but Feminism - aka advocacy for women and girls wide wide isn’t a left/right issue.

I cannot fathom why people think she’s moved rightward as she’s aged, she’s always been Libertarian.

Bowlofbabelfish · 03/07/2018 18:41

The Poisonwood bible is one of the best books I’ve ever read.

Do I agree with everything GG has ever said? Why would I? I don’t need to agree with 100% of someone else’s opinions to respect them or recognise the massive contribution they’ve made, and continue to make, to a cause. Ditto I realise that some people I generally dislike have opinions I sometimes share.

This demonisation/lauding and dividing everyone into goodies and baddies is one of the reasons we are in this mess. It’s also what people with Cat. B disorders do all the darn time. It’s why twitter pile ons happen. It’s why we’ve lost all nuance and debate and critical thought. It’s why brexit happened and it’s why the people are demonised as ‘lefty snowflakes’ and ‘evil tories’ rather than us taking each position on merit.

I dont care that GG has said some stuff I don’t agree with, because I’m am adult who realised that life is not divided between Absolute Good and Evil.

R0wantrees · 03/07/2018 18:48

I watched a lecture Germaine Greer gave (thanks to someone sharing it here) & she said she respected those who disagreed with her, & she was happy to listen to people who disagreed, what she objected to was not being heard. This resonated.

The lecture which is over an hour long is a reduction of the book The Whole Women, which in turn was a result of many years of study and thought:

I don't think Germaine Greer's views reduce easily to short interviews, let alone soundbites or tweets.

I also don't think its neccesary to agree with everything a person, writer or academic says in order to respect them.

The lecture was linked on this thread, I really appreciated the share:

Yet Paris wants others to be perfect in the way that suits Paris and the opinions Paris has.

GG gives an opinion because GG likes to challenge people.

Well said @bowlofbabelfish

I read The Female Eunuch 30 years ago and it was like a shot of oxygen to the brain. I've read loads of Greer since then, sometimes I think she's right, sometines wrong, sometimes barmy and all shades in between. She's always interesting and as someone said, she's always been a libertarian and can seem impatient with women as a class, especially those who aren't as tough and combative as her.

I love her though, those nitwits passing for young feminists now aren't fit to clean her shoes.

R0wantrees · 03/07/2018 18:59

GardenGeek
I have a theory that the way FB and Twitter etc work in the way they prompt an immediate like/dont like or tweet/don't tweet has pushed many people towards an emotional, often binary reaction.
This in turn encourages the taking of sides eg my side good, the other bad. There is so often little reflection, nuance or thought. Information is reduced right down and then scanned or half listened to.
I think we all need to read more books!

AnOpinion · 03/07/2018 19:05

I dont care what Greer says. I support freedom of speech. I hate this bloody authoritarianism atm! Its pissing me off to no end. Paris isn't the only one doing it! EVERYONE FUCKING IS! AHHHHHHH

The backlash has begun. Children rebelling against uniform changes and now parents rebelled at a school today.

When the bullied group become the bully, the average people rebel and lose sympathy with the original bullied group.

Preach it!

The worst possible outcome anywhere is to have Cat B people anywhere near positions of influence.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 03/07/2018 19:17

The Poisonwood Bible - I've found my people!

What's the one about the butterflies where the mother realises that motherhood had stripped her of all her identity and as she looks at her hairbrush, and her kids' hair in it, realises that she doesn't even own anything that she can call her own anymore? That absolute loss of identity, sacrificing everything to children resonated for me when I read it. I don't see certain people queueing up to experience that unique experience of being a woman.
