The last few days, there have been several claims of misandry on Feminist Chat. Please post examples here using a link and screen shot.

Thank you.

People who want to die generally don't attempt suicide, but I've pretty much said all I've got to say tbh.

Terftastic · 27/02/2018 01:16

Did you actually read what I said?

Women attempt suicide more than men.

Pratcatcher · 27/02/2018 01:15

My best friend's brother (a close childhood friend of mine) deliberately burned himself to death in his car after an argument with his boyfriend. True story which I doubt you'll believe.

I'm sure his family thought "it's ok, there are loads of rich men out there."

Pratcatcher · 27/02/2018 01:12

Terftastic

But the statistics around male suicide don't lie.

Call me an MRA or whatever you like (I don't care) but the prevalence of men in lofty positions doesn't negate the issues faced by the huge number that kill themselves.

What context do you need? Men are killing themselves at 4x the rate of women and you're wilfully diminishing it due to the presence of some rich white males, who also make up a tiny, extremely privileged proportion of the male population. That's the context.

Even if the wealthiest are men by average, they don't constitute the average man.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 27/02/2018 01:08

If male suicide is your concern - then I have no argument with that, but suggest that you consult men's mental health groups, rather than try to bludgeon women whom you demonise as feminists!

thebewilderness · 27/02/2018 01:01

We are going to take Maya Angelou's advice, prat. Now that you have shown us who you are, we are going to believe you.

Terftastic · 27/02/2018 00:58

You are an MRA, prat. You can't hide it. Everything you've said here is what MRAs say.

Misandry has no context, because women don't hold the power. You're moaning about male tears mugs - when the majority of positions of power, the wealth, the privilege are still held by men.

Pratcatcher · 27/02/2018 00:57

And being aware of the topical men's issues doesn't automatically make me an MRA in the troll sense. I read a lot of feminist writing too from Megan Murphy through Julie Bindel, Jessica Valenti, Christina Hoff Summers, etc, right through to unknown Tumblr nutters.

Pratcatcher · 27/02/2018 00:53

I do think MRAs have the wrong motivations but that there is some truth in what they say, even if said mainly to bait feminists.

I doubt that the MP proposing a day to talk about men's issues had nefarious reasons and for a feminist to sneer at him and get away with it is abhorrent. I'd also hate to have been a suicidal male student at York Uni and get the impression that I didn't matter - the stated reason for cancelling was "to focus on women's inequalities", nothing to do with MRAs.

I don't come onto forums like this to berate feminists but I saw this thread about misandry and once again it seemed that feminists were trying to deny its existence. I know I'm mentioning typical MRA tropes, but male violence is the archetypal feminist trope. Neither should be dismissed as insignificant.

thebewilderness · 27/02/2018 00:44

Blergh! Typos. Fire, No set on fire, NO.

Terftastic · 27/02/2018 00:44

You've had a fine time reading the MRA sites haven't you, prat. I would suggest you step away from them. These are all MRA arguments that have been debunked. Warren Farrell is a vile misogynist. International Men's Day events often (even if they have the valid topic of suicide as one event) are really men's rightsy - and very misogynistic.

It's really galling for women to hear this crap time and time again - when male violence is the problem. Male violence - towards women, towards other men, and even towards themselves.

Although, you may like to note that many more women attempt suicide than men - but men are more likely to choose violent methods, and more likely to succeed in suicide attempts.

I have sons - I don't laugh at male suicide rates. But women are still dealing with being the second sex. And still dealing with male violence against them.

thebewilderness · 27/02/2018 00:43

I thought a feminist was somebody who wanted equality between the sexes
No you didn't. Being an MRA you are perfectly aware that Feminism is the political movement for women's liberation, and that honking about equality was part of the backlash against Feminism created by men like you.
I said this before and I will say it again. We are not going to set ourselves on fore to keep you warm
Bringing anti feminist cant to the Feminist pages of Mumsnet is a trolls errand.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 27/02/2018 00:41

What are men doing to overcome the problem of male suicide?

What are you, personally doing to deal humanely with men's mental health?

Pratcatcher · 27/02/2018 00:26

LightofaSilveryMoon

Because when events to discuss things like male suicide are organised, it's often feminists that protest.

For example, York Uni cancelling International Men's Day (which was going to discuss suicide as one issue) the very day after a male student had committed suicide - the reason being that feminists had protested. They even issued a statement that they were "instead going to focus on the inequalities faced by women" despite there also being an IWD for this specific purpose.

And locally to me, the MP Jess Philips literally laughing aloud at the suggestions of IMD, stating that she was the only woman in the room and every day is IMD - as if her privileged peers are the males killing themselves in the face of hardship.

I also remember watching the Warren Farrell protest where feminists were screaming "scum"'at men trying to enter. One mentioned that he'd lost two friends to suicide and was attending because this topic was on the agenda and he was hoping to better understand, the other said that he was just curious and usually attended diverse events.

There has been much misandry in feminism and feminists often actively fight against initiatives intended to address men's issues solely for the reason that 'women have it worse' it seems.

Terftastic · 27/02/2018 00:11

MRAs that come on here and tell women how to do feminism get laughed at. When you bring up shit that we haven't even said - you will be ridiculed.

Datun · 27/02/2018 00:06

Prat

You're just trolling now. And not making any sense.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 27/02/2018 00:03

From your viewpoint, you say that this is a male problem, and fair enough, it is.
So why are you expecting women to fix male problems for men?

Terftastic · 26/02/2018 23:57

You brought up male tears - prat - and even admitted it was on tumblr not on Mumsnet.

We do laugh at MRAs here. Not suicide.

Pratcatcher · 26/02/2018 23:54

The whole 'male tears' meme which is being joked about in this thread is a mockery of men's issues. Pretty callous considering the whole 'boys don't cry' attitude which seems so prevalent amongst men (who often kill themselves rather than confide), and especially in light of feminists' claims to want an end to toxic masculinity.

But hey all the business moguls and politicians are male so it's ok to laugh about these issues, right? Punching upwards.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 26/02/2018 23:51

"Despite these being typical MRA tropes, I've not seen much in this thread to discredit them tbh...

This is word salad, now.

Terftastic · 26/02/2018 23:42

Nobody's even mentioned suicide on this thread, let alone laughed at it, Prat - you shocking straw man builder you.

Pratcatcher · 26/02/2018 23:39

Despite these being typical MRA tropes, I've not seen much in this thread to discredit them tbh...

Pratcatcher · 26/02/2018 23:37

I thought a feminist was somebody who wanted equality between the sexes - if so, then I must be one.

However, if it's somebody who thinks that's it's ok to laugh at male issues like the shockingly high suicide rate because it's "punching upwards", well then I guess I'm not. Confused

Datun · 26/02/2018 23:24

Radicool feminist.

Terftastic · 26/02/2018 23:04

I like misogynandrist.

Let's make up a few words of our own Wink
