Oldest person you've known

Inspired by the largest families thread. How old is the oldest person you know/ have known? In my extended family and husband's family a fair few people lived into their nineties. My Grandad turned 95 last week and I think he's the oldest, great grandkids all at school now! Beamed all the way through his birthday celebrations, it was so lovely to see!

A great-aunt (well, she was actually a second cousin but we called her 'auntie') who lived to 97.

She had many friends but never married or, as far as we know, had a partner - I wonder if that was her secret to a long life!

Going by some of the stories you hear in the news, no kids and regular consumption of hard liquor seems to be the recipe for a long life!

I've only just remembered that my grandad's lady friend is actually older than him, so 96. No children. There must be something in it...

A great aunt who lived to be 96. Oldest man lived to be 95, and before he died was the last of those alive in the first world war I had ever met.

My great grandmother was 105 when she died in 1999. One more year and she would have lived in three centuries

My father in law is 95, still drives, still cooks his own meals, lives independently, doesn’t need carers or anything, although lives round the corner from us. He can still beat us all at scrabble, only recently started walking with a stick but can still walk reasonably well. My grandad lived until he was 98 but was in a care home for the last few years of his life.

My great uncle died a few days before his 101st birthday

Wonderful to hear of all these older people that were in good health and able to live fulfilling lives.

What do you think helped their longevity (apart from good genes). Did they keep fit, look after their health, have a positive outlook/able to cope with stress?

A relative (not quite sure of the details) who reached 108 and was Coventry's oldest citizen in the 1960s. I was about five or six, so a hazy memory.

My great grandmother who made it to 97 in 1987, I was 19 when she died. She was about 4'10" and made of steel.
Born in 1890, she was one of 9. 24 at the start of WW1, she lost 2 brothers in it. Had 4 children and buried 2 of them before they were 3. Stayed in London right through WW2.
Smoked like a chimney, fit as a flea, I can remember her skipping when I was a child so was north of 85.
She was a widow for 50 years. Her line are long lived. Through Anchestry, I found that her dad lived into his 90s and her Grandad too, at a time when working class croaked at about 50!

Dh’s grandfather was 105 when he died. Lived independently, just had a cleaner in twice per week.

With Dh’s grandfather no being able to drive probably helped- a life time of walking or using the bus.

My mum’s Nan was 104! She was a bit deaf and blind when I knew her but she knew who I was.

Certainly no children for my auntie, although she spent time with children in the family and liked to lecture us on how spoiled we were 😆. Didn't smoke, liked her food though and an occasional drink - she enjoyed a Cinzano. As far as we know she wasn't knocking it back secretly but since she lived alone, she could do whatever she liked and fair play to her if she was!

When I worked as a carer, I went a few times to a lady of 105

MIL 101.
At her 100th birthday, in a Care Home, she made a comment that she would have preferred a decent Claret for the toast rather than the Prosecco !

Friends mum is 99

My great grandmother, and familial matriarch Moeder (paternal family is Dutch) died when she was 102. My grandma (Moeder’s last surviving child) was 96 when she died in 2018.

Both were formidable!

Grandmothers 90 and 101
Mum 96
Aunts 90 86 84
Dad 83
Sadly just lost my brother at 79, i thought he would make 80's, so we never know.

My dear late Grandma - 97. Although stopped being able to communicate properly aged around 90 (dementia.)

My nextdoor neightbour growing up was 96 and remained wonderful company until she passed away, as did my great-aunt at 93.

So glad I knew these fantastic people. Grandma was born 1917, and the other two around 10 years later, like the Queen.

That generation was very decent, caring and well-mannered. Lovely people.

I know someone who’s 101 and still mostly independent.

Cobrakainerd · Yesterday 18:36

Family friend was 104.

My neighbour recently died just before his 90th birthday.

When I worked as carer one lady I helped was 102.

Out of my relatives no one has lived past 80.

catsrus · Yesterday 18:39

Lovely neighbour died 10 days before her 100th birthday - up to a few days before that she was living independently and still walking upstairs to her bedroom!

They used all of the 100th birthday napkins, plates and decorations at the funeral tea - they knew she would have disapproved of them going to waste!

Teenagerantruns · Yesterday 18:41
