Oldest person you've known

Inspired by the largest families thread. How old is the oldest person you know/ have known? In my extended family and husband's family a fair few people lived into their nineties. My Grandad turned 95 last week and I think he's the oldest, great grandkids all at school now! Beamed all the way through his birthday celebrations, it was so lovely to see!

Never known a 100+ but a few of my dad’s side got well into their 90s. Sadly my dad died in his 60s which was a shock as I assumed he’d also live a long time 😥

As someone now mid 70s this is a very inspiring thread!
My father died just after his 80th birthday and he was absolutely delighted to reach 80 because long life wasn't the norm in his family. His father died very young because his health was badly affected by poverty and unemployment in the 1920s. My mother and maternal grand mother lived into their 80s but the men of the family definitely followed the pattern of shorter lives. My own brother died in his late 70s.
I'm going to have to try and break family traditions and actually see if I can reach 90!

My Grandma (Dad's mother). She died three months before her 100th birthday. All her sisters lived into their 90s and their brother died in his late 80s. Their mother died at 92 (although sadly she had Alzheimer's for the last few years). Her husband had died in his early 80s. My Dad died at 89 and his sister (lifelong heavy smoker) died at 80. I can't think of a single person on that side of the family who died under the age of 80.

On my mother's side of the family her maternal grandmother lived to 98. She was very frail for the last few years, but did not have dementia. She'd had a very tough life which makes her very long life particularly remarkable. All her children are long dead now and none of them reached that age. Smoking was a factor in several of their deaths, notably my Great-Uncle who died of lung cancer in his 60s. My Mum, who never smoked, made it to 93 in spite of a couple of serious health problems (much to her own disgust - she would have been happy to die as soon as she lost my Dad, sadly).

Gran 98
Dad 94
Uncle (still alive) 96
Aunt 90
Aunt 92

All paternal family.

I'm going to assume your Gran is not your Dad's Mum.

I looked after Mother and Daughter - Mother was 105 and Daughter was 82 both in the same care home. I also looked after a 104 year old lady recently who was being cared for by her 80 something year old Daughter at home. Poor Daughter was really struggling.

Why? 👀

She died when she was 98 and he died when he was 94.

Why assume she wasn't his mum?

Tryingtothinkofausername · Yesterday 12:38

I must be considerably older than some of the commentators as my paternal grandparents were born in the 1890s so it doesn't seem surprising to me that they met people born then.

  1. I'm privileged to work in a care home.

Presumably the commentator though they were both alive and your gran would be two years older than your dad.

The care home I visit houses a wonderful cockney lady aged 103. She is sharp as a tack, doesn’t look her age and is full of interesting stories and keeps up with politics and sport.

Edited

WHY???? 🤣🤣🤣

My gran died nearly 40 years ago and my dad died last year.

I'm not talking about when they were BORN.

This thread is about how long they lived to.

ETA: Ahh I see you've edited your reply.

My great aunt and my second cousin. Both lived to 99

NoHangoversToday · Yesterday 12:41

I met someone of 101.

FIL was 96 when he died. He had a fall and deteriorated fast. But the hospital ward he was in assumed he had dementia (he most emphatically did not) and kept putting 'dementia' on his notes which he and we kept objecting to. He was still doing crosswords and talking politics until he got the final infection contracted in hospital.

All of DH's family are long lived. No-one died before 90. My GPs all died before the age of 72. I'm 52 and hoping I will break that mold.

HowLateItWasHowLate · Yesterday 12:44

Ah - apologies - I thought OP meant extant.

Obviously if they're all dead that changes things.

Lomonald · Yesterday 12:45

My step dads brother is in his 90s but I have never met him,

Cairneyes · Yesterday 12:47

My aunt is almost 95 and still going strong!

Ahh that makes sense.

There was some confusion between oldest person you 'know', and oldest you've 'known', which is the thread title.

My neighbour is 96. Lives alone with no help and is fitter/more active than many in their 50s. She's amazing.

My neighbour died recently she was 93, she had carers for her husband but in herself she was independent and active she was a great neighbour.

WaitingForAComet · Yesterday 12:54

The oldest person I've ever actually met was my maternal great-grandmother who died at 99. She had given birth to 12 children before the NHS or antibiotics and they all lived into old age!

When tracing my family history I discovered that my paternal great-great-great grandmother was born in 1818 and died in 1915 aged 97. Her sisters died aged 91 and 94. All of them had given birth several times, so were obviously extremely healthy & lucky for the times they lived in.

Grandfather, 102.

Myblueclematis · Yesterday 13:03

My grandmother who got to 103. Currently have an uncle 99 in December and friend's MIL who is 101 also in December.

Know three other people, one nearly 90, and two at 96.
