People talk about these crazy massive families that exist on news but what is the largest family you know? Im from quite a middle class area down south. Most families I know have one or two kids, sometimes three. I have one friend pregnant with her fourth and know one school mum with five! Very unusual though.

My friend is one of 12. Same parents for all.

At school, DD had one friend who was one of 7 and another friend who was one of 8. Again, same parents for all.

DD also has a friend at uni with lots of foster siblings but that's a bit different.

I think lots of big families these days are blended families? Maybe they start off each having a couple of kids of their own and then have a couple more together?

I have one friend with 10 kids and another with 7.

Oh wow! Are they quite rich?

Eleven. And she (and he husband) are lovely, hardworking and their kids behave brilliantly, before anyone asks! But the vast majority I know have zero or one, if you're talking about my age group.
If you're including older generations, whose kids are adults, then most have between 1-3.

ChoccyHobknob · 22/10/2026 21:57

We know several families with 5 and one of 7. One of five kids with one on the way and the dad is one of 11. South east. But it does seem odd!

Mammut · 22/10/2026 21:57

I am one of six. Colleague had eight children.

I grew up Catholic, so went to school with a family of 12 (both parents were doctors), and another with 11 boys. My grandmother had 17 births, 11 of whom survived to adulthood.
As an adult, I know one family of 8 and another of 6 (both mums love babies, families are well cared for etc).

17 births 😳

Should add, DH was one of six. He only has one left now though.

Quadropulous · 22/10/2026 21:58

I think 6 kids or maybe 7 so far. But I know multiple families like that. Beautiful Catholic families. Very happy marriages. Kids with fantastic education. Very bright, successful careers. A pleasure to be around them. I reckon they might have more as still quite young so 6 is not max lol

momtoboys · 22/10/2026 21:58

I used to date a man who was one of 13. Now, though, the biggest I know is 7.

user3199 · 22/10/2026 22:00

Worked with someone my age (40s) who was one of 14. That's the biggest family I'm personally aware of.

I have a parent who was one of 6. That's the biggest sibling set in my wider family. A relative my age has 5 kids which is a lot for this generations (they are all currently teenagers).

Of my own friends with children the maximum is 3 and includes a set of twins in both cases (ie they didn't plan to have 3). A few 3 child families in my child's school but I'm not aware of any larger ones.

MyPantsAreFartCentral · 22/10/2026 22:03

Three of my friends come from big families (all Catholic!). 7, 10 and 14!

RedBinToday · 22/10/2026 22:05

Of my middle class (by education) peers, only two families had four children and none more than that. The vast majority of us had one or two.

A family member has five. She intended to have four but the fourth pregnancy produced twins. She and her husband are both senior doctors, all five children went to an expensive independent school and followed that with attendance at top universities. The eldest is also a doctor, the second an engineer...people are often surprised by how many children they have - that high a number is extraordinarily unusual among their peers.

AQuietBatPerson · 22/10/2026 22:06

I was at school with someone who was one of 13.

babyproblems · 22/10/2026 22:06

Six. When I met her she had five boys. Desperate for a girl so she spun the wheel again.. boy!! She did see the funny side. She’s one of those women who takes it all in her stride, born to be a mother. A huge amount of village/community around her. She is Tongan & I know many women with several children and close families but six is something special! She also Cooks for hundreds at the drop of a hat if required. When I struggled to find caterers for our wedding, she offered to cook the entire thing 😂 heart of gold! I could never have six children or cater for a wedding single handedly and with pure grace.

Goinggreymammy · 22/10/2026 22:06

Older generations - lots. My mother was the youngest of 13. I had a friend (who would be in 40s now) who is the youngest of 12.
Of families i know with children nowadays, i know a few fives, that's the biggest.

SarahAndQuack · 22/10/2026 22:07

I know someone who has had 7.

A friend of mine had 5, including two sets of twins born within less than 18 months of each other.

Another friend, who is the generation up from me so perhaps doens't count, is 9th of 12.

Bitsostuff · 22/10/2026 22:08

I've an Irish friend who was one of seven children- she's had 2 children and all her siblings have either had one, or none, so I'm guessing they didn't love it so much they want to repeat the experiment (from what she's said I don't think her mother exactly loved it either).

A Nigerian friend is one of 18. 8 full siblings and another 9 half siblings by his father's senior wife. Again, the next generation all have between 1 and 3 children.

I was one of 4 and have 4 children, and have a couple of friends with similar. I would have liked more but only if Id started earlier iyswim. Not sure dh would have agreed though.

Totaldramallama · 22/10/2026 22:09

Most I know in my own age bracket is a school friend with four kids.

My mum one of 5, DH is one of 6, MIL one of 13 and FIL was one of 15. Mil and fil Irish catholics born and raised in Ireland

bekindtome · 22/10/2026 22:10

My grandad was 1 of 18.
I know a couple of people who have 6.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/10/2026 22:12

When I was at school there were quite a few brethren Christian families who all had 10 plus kids.

Right now the biggest family I know is my brother and sil who have 4 children.

WearingBeautifulShoes · 22/10/2026 22:14

In this generation - ie children who are still children - I know one family with 5 DC and 2 families with 4 DC.
Every other family I can think of though have 3 or, more commonly, 2 or occasionally 1.

Skesn · 22/10/2026 22:14

DH is one of 6, I know two other families with 6 children, and two others with 4 children. The linking factor is that they are/come from very wealthy families. 3 is most usual in my social/family group, after that 2 children.

It's literally just occurred to me that I know very few families/parents with only one child!

Makebelieveanotherlife · 22/10/2026 22:15

A school mum with 4 and I pity her. It looks like hell.

goingdownhopefully · 22/10/2026 22:15

eight. Now in their twenties and thirties. They had a wonderful childhood. And I loved every second of being their mum.

SquigglePigs · 22/10/2026 22:16

I'm in my 40's and have two similar age friends who are each 1 of 6 and one of my best friends growing up was 1 of 5. Three kids wasn't unusual.

At DD's school there is one family with 4 kids. I also have a friend who has 5 kids but from 2 relationships and across a very wide age range (2-25).

Most friends and kids friends seem to be max 2 kids though. It feels like larger families are more unusual now.
