People talk about these crazy massive families that exist on news but what is the largest family you know? Im from quite a middle class area down south. Most families I know have one or two kids, sometimes three. I have one friend pregnant with her fourth and know one school mum with five! Very unusual though.

My mum was one of 11. They're all in their or would have been in the 70s and 80s though so not recently.
The biggest family I know of is someone from ds class who is one of five. Would have been 4 but the last pregnancy was twins.

1 with 9, two with 7. I've got 5. It's quite common to have lots of children where I live.

Ten. Catholic background though. When I was growing up 4-6 was fairly normal, 1 or 2 a very small family.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 22/10/2026 20:28

One of the girls I knew from school has 9. The eldest is 24 and the youngest is 4.

My SIL (DH sister) has 14 or 15. I've lost count. We don't have contact with them because we don't approve of their choices (religious extremism, not educating the children etc).

A family at the DCs primary school had 5, another had 6. I have coleagues with 6 & 8. I work with some families with between 10 and 14 but wouldn't say I knew them. Most started at 17/18 with the last baby in their early 40's.

Can you say roughly where you are? (Understand if not). UK?

A girl I knew from school had 17. I believe one set of twins in there.

My grandmother was youngest of 10 children. That was a long time ago though (1910s - 1930s).

My father is one of 6 children, born in the 1950s - 1970s. A cousin of my mother's had 5, all girls. Another cousin of my mothers had 5 too.

I have 3. I know lots of others with 1, 2, or 3 children. A couple of people with 4. The most children who are actually still children now, that I know or know of? 4!

drspouse · 22/10/2026 20:34

A mum at my DCs' primary had about 8. They all wore hand me downs which is obviously fine but the clothes had clearly been through 4 at least beforehand. The DCs never looked happy and neither did the mum except once I realised she looked happy and then noticed she was pregnant. Again.

SillyG · 22/10/2026 20:34

I have 6dc and only know one other person with 6dc.
In my family/friends 1 or 2 dc is the norm.

Theunamedcat · 22/10/2026 20:36

My friend has 8 they range from thirties to late primary in my family the most we had was 8 living a lot on my area have 2/3 rarely 4

NotCompletelyUnfortunateLooking · 22/10/2026 20:37

There is a woman at DC's school with 6, although with a wide age range. She is so chill and always looks fresh and organised, it's really annoying 😆

lemoncurdcupcake · 22/10/2026 20:39

Couple of people with four now, two with five and recently met someone about to have her sixth 🥴

We moved from the south to the north and would say most of our southern city friends had one or two, v rare to have three and I don't know anyone with more than three. Up here two or three is more usual, we know more families who have four children than families who have just the one.

I've got three. Someone called the third the gateway baby and I can see it, I want another one 🤣 but I'm too old and we've run out of bedrooms and budget.

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 22/10/2026 20:39

My bestie at school, her dad was the youngest of 14 (she had 2 siblings)

I went to school with another girl who had 9 (last time I checked)

I met a bloke at work who told me he was somewhere in the middle of 19 children (he was one half of twins)

I'm the eldest of 4 (and only girl) but if my mother hadn't had 3 stillbirths (and had us as well) I would have been no 4 of 7

We where considered a large family as my cousins/school friends where either only children or one of two

MCF86 · 22/10/2026 20:39

Friends wise, the most is six. Although she was a teen mum and had two, then 4 more later so she didn't actually have six children at one time.

I work in schools and 11 is the most I have come across. I just cannot imagine it, I hated being pregnant so much I only did it once 😂

Uberella · 22/10/2026 20:40

21-my great great grandparents;my great grandfather was child number 18;sadly several of the children passed away though

Wilderness181 · 22/10/2026 20:40

If we’re talking kids currently under 18 then I can’t think of a single family I know with more than 3.

In my DCs class at school there’s only 2 children who have 2 siblings.

NoHangoversToday · 22/10/2026 20:40

I worked with someone who had 8. 5 fathers none of whom were involved. The final time she married all her children (some adults by then) took the name of her husband. She used to say 'every man I've been with wanted a child with me'.

She was degree educated and a highly paid professional. Super organised highly dynamic. Just NOT what the prejudices I did not even know I held, were like.

Lizzieregina · 22/10/2026 20:40

I know someone who had 20 siblings but know loads with 15-17.

PurpleThistle7 · 22/10/2026 20:43

My dad lives in a religious area in the states so most of his neighbours have 10/12/14 kids. Often overlapping with the oldest daughter starting so there are double babies in the family.

in our school community there’s a 5 and a couple of 4s I know of. Mostly 1/2/3. My friends are mostly 1/2 except one who has 3 children and had a baby pass away so I’d want say she had 4. She intended to anyway.

I have 2 kids. Always wanted more but my body had other plans. My wallet thanks me now - teens are expensive!

smilyfairy · 22/10/2026 20:43

I was born in 1970s Ireland lots of big families 7/8 kids was common. Most of my school friends came from families with 5/6 kids as I did .

Deadringer · 22/10/2026 20:44

I am one of 14, but I was born in the 60s. Two of my brothers have 7 dc, I have 5. I didn't know any other big families growing up, but one of my neighbours is also one of 14, she was born in the 70s.

InMy40sEra · 22/10/2026 20:46

My gran was one of 16.
Both of my parents were one of 4.

In modern families, I know of 3 with 6 children (now teens) and quite a few with 4.
