People talk about these crazy massive families that exist on news but what is the largest family you know? Im from quite a middle class area down south. Most families I know have one or two kids, sometimes three. I have one friend pregnant with her fourth and know one school mum with five! Very unusual though.

20 is the largest I have known personally. Fair play to the mum to be honest!

Crunchymum · 24/10/2026 13:31

I'm one of 4, DP is one of 6. I have a sibling with x4 kids and DP has a sibling with x5 kids as well as our other siblings having smaller families

Largest family I know is 20 children (manager at work and a woman I know through a hobby both had 19 siblings)

Two different women were one of 20 children 😯

My eldest sister asked my mum that when mum was pregnant with my youngest sister 😂😂😂

Casualuser · 24/10/2026 15:14

My nan was one of 10 and dad was one of 9.

BigBubblesX · 24/10/2026 15:21

My mum is 1 of 13. My grandad was 1 of 26! My uncle had 8 kids but it was with 2 different women. I always wanted a big family but my husband is from a very small family, we have 2 beautiful girls now but I would love another! I don't think I know many people with many kids now, although there is one family at my daughters school who has 5 kids and people consider that a large family. There is a local family that have 7 kids which seems pretty big these days!

I met a man once who told me he was one of 19. He wasn't a Catholic either. I did have a neighbour in Ireland who had eleven.

It's a vexed question though , you often see news items lately about the population decline. How will we afford pensions in future without young workers etc. It seems we're all doomed either way Captain!

I’m in Yorkshire and growing up my mums friend had 12. Im 30 and the youngest of them is about 16 now. They had to get a mini bus and specialist prams. My mum was friends with her, however personally didn’t agree with it as a lot of them had health conditions so they must have had something in their genetics. From memory, 3 had autism, 3 had heart problems where they had to be operated on very young and 2 had epilepsy. Not all large families will obviously but in my mums friends case they did seem to have a lot and my mum always thought it wasn’t fair to keep on having children with health conditions

I know a couple of families now with 6 and 7 children . DD has 4. I know a few with 4 now and while my kids were young there was one school mum who had 5. when I was at school in the 70s/80s I had a friend who was the youngest of 13. I have been friends with a lady who is older than me she was one of 13. But I haven't known loads from huge families. Ex husband was one of 4 all born between 1946 and 1966.
My grandparents had 1 child and the others had 2 so we only had 1 cousin.

I have a friend who is one of 14 children. She's in her 50s so it would have been more common in that generation
Out of my friends and family the biggest families have 5 children.

Luddite26 · Yesterday 14:18

Thinking about it I am one of at least 5 allegedly on the father's side but none of us have lived together. So I have 7 siblings but only count the 2 I grew up living with.

AllaMova · Yesterday 14:55

Someone I was in school with was one of eleven siblings. The children were seriously neglected.

Allmarbleslost · Yesterday 15:07

A friend of mine has 5, but only because number 4 was twins.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · Yesterday 15:41

I went to school with three sisters who had ten more siblings in addition to them. These sisters were the the older children. The school we went to was a convent with a fairly strict uniform, understandably money was tight so they took it in turns to where the regulation school hat, so they'd more often than not be without it, often getting pulled up on the piece of missing uniform. The nuns knew full well what the reason behind that was but they went through the motions anyway of admonishing whichever sister was hatless that day, there was almost a subliminal muttering of "so many children" in spite of being Irish
and catholic and coming from Ireland they should have been fully conversant with similar scenarios . I remember going to their house, only 3 bedrooms, beds everywhere! The eldest sister who was charged with so much responsibility often swore she'd never have any children of her own. Last I heard she'd emigrated to live in Canada so no idea whether she kept to that.

We have 5 sons, they were born in the late 80's early 90's. Loved every minute of the madness and mayhem😁 We now have 8 grandchildren, only one grandson. Funny how things work out!

YorkshireIndie · Yesterday 15:54

My MIL is one of 9 and my FIL was one of 7. There is a woman at school who has just had her 5th

LancashireButterPie · Yesterday 17:57

Hotandpointy · Yesterday 18:55

I find it’s only the very wealthy or the benefit dependent families who have more than 3 children these days.

I only managed 1, would love to have had 2 or 3 but the expense of more seems way too much to realistically cope with.

Dancingintherain09 · Yesterday 21:26

I know someone in my town currently pregnant with number 17 she's 44 and lives in a two bedroom house the 3 or 4 oldest have moved out and she has two grandchildren 😆🙈🙊
