People talk about these crazy massive families that exist on news but what is the largest family you know? Im from quite a middle class area down south. Most families I know have one or two kids, sometimes three. I have one friend pregnant with her fourth and know one school mum with five! Very unusual though.

Loads? Really wow. That’s crazy.

The 21 family was in the US, but the loads of 15+ wasn’t unusual in Ireland when I was growing up, I can think of 4 neighbour families off the top of my head! My husband has 12 siblings.

Of my peers, I only know some 5s and 6s.

Scissorabyss · 23/10/2026 02:05

I went out with someone who had five brothers and sisters. Of people my age with kids, the most is four (number 3 ended up being twins)!

Iloveagoodnap · 23/10/2026 02:42

I know someone who now has 9 kids with 6 dads. But 3 kids are no longer in her care.

Someone with 5.

Someone with 7.

When I was a teenager I helped at a local Brownies pack and one girl was the youngest of 8 sisters. But she also had a twin brother, who was the only boy. I always felt a bit sorry for her as I expect her birth was overshadowed by a long awaited boy being born!

When I was at primary I was friends with a girl who was the middle child of 5 siblings. The family was quite hard up and my friend got picked on terribly. I think that was the biggest set of children I knew of when I was a child but there were a few sets of 4.

I have noticed in my area that I see the same mums walking young kids home from school that I used to see when my two oldest were little ten years ago. So a lot of families in my area have ‘started again’ with children after having an initial set.

Friends or people I know?

Know one family with 7, all spread out. Doing very well.

Through my work at schools, I've known families of 8, think the highest was a family of 14, all living in a 3 bed flat. Awful for the kids ☹️

Confusedmommadrama · 23/10/2026 02:53

South east, 4 and 5 are the highest I know, both families have 1 set of twins and think they kind of class them as 1 in their heads from talking to mum. Also big gaps in the middle of around 7 years between oldest 2 and the younger ones

mathanxiety · 23/10/2026 03:10

One family of seven, five (including my own) with five, too many to count with four, and many, many more with three.

The kids would all be teens to 20somethings now.

Northern Midwest US, big city.

ChewbaccasMrs · 23/10/2026 03:56

I have 5DC,1 of my brothers has 7DC and my other brother has 6DC,1 of my Auntie and Uncle had 7DC and 1 of their children had 7DC.

My extended family is very large.

purpleblast · 23/10/2026 04:04

Mum dad get together with child each. Have 2 girls. Break up. Dad’s new partner having a new baby. How do you even class the family’s size for the kids, they’re one of 3 at mums and one of 4 at dads

Solotravelwonder · 23/10/2026 05:48

Ex h is one of 8 that we're born in the 80s.

I know 2 families with 5DC and 2 with 4DC.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/10/2026 05:52

I went to school with a family of 15, but the younger 10 or so had a different mother.

A local family to be me has 10.

A friend is one of 8,

How many of his kids have anything to do with him? I going to go out on a limb and suggest that there was overlap between baby mothers more than once!

No meaningful overlap I don’t think, though I think there was a cheating situation while with mother 1 (my MIL) and mother 2, but there’s generally about 7 years between each “set”. Varying levels of contact - no out and out hostility but each set have at some point felt significantly let down. My husband found having a child of his own really brought it into sharp relief and he’s struggled since.

StupidCupid50 · 23/10/2026 07:08

My daft sister had this thing that she didn’t want an odd number of children. I have no idea why, she couldn’t explain it but she didn’t want an odd number of children

She had four, then had a surprise. Of course she then wanted another to make six because of this weird odd number thing.

Youve guessed it, pregnancy six was twins. So she then had seven. Her husband tried to say to her it really didn’t matter having an odd number but she insisted on number eight. BIL then had the snip!!!

I will say all eight are so polite and well behaved, they put mine to shame sometimes! All she ever wanted to be was a mother, her eldest went to university last month and she was devastated, but I dread to think how many grandchildren she will end up with!!!

ThatRedFish · 23/10/2026 07:26

I know someone who has just had her 6th, her oldest will be 12 soon. 3 different dads.

Boxfulloftoys · 23/10/2026 07:33

SIL is one of 11
I know plenty of families that have 7 but who would be in their 50s and 60s.
School Mum had 8 before she was 32.

AmusedMaker · 23/10/2026 08:21

My Mum was one of 12 and my Dad one of 11.
I grew up with plenty of families that had 6 or 7 children.
My friend has 6.

StarCourt · 23/10/2026 08:22

When I was a teen there was a family on my road totalling 21 kids.

Charlenedickens · 23/10/2026 08:24

Two large families,

one at school, they had eight or ten kids, I can’t recall and a colleague I work with has eight, his wife is a school teacher and home educates them all,

TigerRag · 23/10/2026 08:25

I used to know someone with 6 DC. My dad is one of 5. Mum is one of 6. But with the exception of her brother, the rest are half siblings

Wheniswinenight · 23/10/2026 08:29

There’s a family in our local village with 7 kids. DD is friends with one of them. The youngest is maybe 8 or 9.
My fil was one of 11 born in the 30’s/40’s. Wouldn’t have been usual here in Ireland.

ManyATrueWord · 23/10/2026 08:31

Women with families that large are usually too busy to make new friends. They also have very different life choices to me, so we probably aren't going to get on that well. The one woman I know with six children follows a fundamentalist Christian religion and home schools. The woman I knew with seven was friendly but was a practised taker. Six children, two with serious SEN and she has another one. Well, the Government will provide. They were provided with a bigger house elsewhere so I could.stop trying.

Gourdgirl · 23/10/2026 08:34

10
MIL had 10 children. Mad.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 23/10/2026 08:37

The most I know personally is 6.
These are people my age though so not this generation of parents.
I was at school with 2 children who were twins and had twin siblings plus 2 other siblings. In both cases the youngest were twins.
As for people my age having children, the most I know personally is 4.
Even my mum was only 1 of 4 and so was my mil.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 23/10/2026 08:47

MrsJonBonJovi · 23/10/2026 00:18

Someone I went to school with has 13 in total, ranging from 30 to 5. Her youngest 6 have been taken into care however.

This is appalling.

Extraenergyneeded · 23/10/2026 09:08

When I was a kid there was a family near us who had 13 kids. DH is one of six but two are half siblings on either side so mum has five and dad has five and four of them have the same parents iyswim.
