As I said regulating what people can consume or what nonsense people can share across media channels perhaps isn’t such a bad thing

You are not anwering the question.

Perhaps you can't?

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2026 10:05

Good grief. Its not 'regulation of media' for heavens sakes.
There are bans of criticism of government policies or of the royal family and control over access of foreign press.

You seem to enjoy consuming media which criticises your own government.
But wave away an authoritarian regime which doesn't allow for independent press when it suits you.

Sigh. A bounced or cancelled cheque, if the creditor claims there was an intent to defraud, or not paying a creditor you don’t think you owe money to (say because the service provided was inadequate), can land you with a prison sentence and/or a travel ban. It used to be much more stringent. I knew someone (from Birmingham!) who spent time in prison after moving their child to a different school in Abu Dhabi. They thought they’d given the requisite notice not to owe a term’s fees in lieu, but the school thought otherwise, and when the funds weren’t there, filed a formal complaint. In those days a cheque bouncing was automatically a criminal matter.

Wow that sounds extreme! Thankfully not a daily occurance out here that I know of. We always have instant confirmation for any payments or communication we have made so not much danger of that happening

you asked my opinion and I gave it, perhaps the UK could do with some more regulation

In the UK most homes have turned their front gardens (drainage and nature) into car parks with several cars per family

ignorance prevails everywhere.

i did answer your question

How often did you / do you leave London when you are in the UK because you really don't have much of a clue about how the rest of the country.

Dubai doesn’t have any independent press - you want that for the UK?

Quite often, we have family and friends across the country

Parking in front of the wrong villa, how does this happen and who are these ‘people’ calling the police. Luckily he wasn’t drinking? - I should hope not there is zero tolerance to drink driving….knowing how it functions out here you should have known this.

That is unfortunate re your car and the lorry though, have not heard of that outcome before though in similar incidents that have happened to others here.

I don't know if you are naive and trying to be smart here ? Are you suggesting I am lying ? I didn't give the whole boring detail - here you go : our cat had run away and he was trying to track it late at night , was in a panic and parked the car when he returned in the dark beside the identical villa two doors up . He didn't notice. The next morning he realised thinking our car had been stolen and moved the car - no morning drinking. The neighbours called the police. They didn't know us 🤷‍♀️

I don't know why you're being so cocky and smart . It's making me think this isn't a genuine post because you couldn't answer questions honestly even if you felt critical due to Law 34 on Cybercrimes.

RedToothBrush · 21/10/2026 10:11

There a part of the Dubai set who aren't any different to the colonial Victorians.

They had separate entrances for the poor staff and didn't want to see poverty. There's a mentality of somehow they are less human. And they don't have any sense of social responsibility and how poverty is caused / can be reduced.

Not for the UK no but they could do with some kind of regulation at times, look at the scaremongering around Covid as an example

In gated communities with your armed security so your kids don't get snatched?

I'm guessing you can't answer the question.

Yes it's great that you feel safe walking down the street, but I wouldn't like to be so worried about what I can post, especially if it isn't that radical

Ah ok the context definitely helps clarify the story. I can’t imagine what kind of community you lived in for that to happen, we know all of our neighbours here

No in the UK. I mean given it's so dangerous. How do you cope when you visit?

I don’t put anything across social media so it’s not a problem

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2026 10:23

You live in a country with no free press and where criticism of government policy is wholly criminalised - and you don't appear to recognise the issue with this.

Your preferred method of press restriction would mean there would be less criticism of Government legislation eg Covid restrictions, not more.

Yes, we have noticed you avoid answering the questions about censorship and other negativity on this social media outlet.

I am now fully convinced this poster isn't genuine. The suggestion that the way Dubai handle their media is best is too far. I simply do not believe you can think that. Along with not having noticed all the places shutting down including the schools for a time. This must be a piece of Dubai propaganda.

Would you prefer that the UK had the same rules? You certainly wouldn't think the NHS was in trouble if they did.
