Honestly what would you think of sisters both with gem stone names?

Honest opinions guys what would you think of sisters with gem names along the lines of pearl and jade or Ruby and Amber?

Not Amethyst and Sapphire.

Sorry for posting in 30 days it’s so there’s no digital footprint of anyone saying it’s shit 😂

NC as could be outing, but 20+ years ago when my DC were young there was a family at their school with 4 girls. They were called Jade, Amber, Crystal and Topaz. They then moved away and a few years later had a boy, called Liam!

I kind of like it but it does they do sound like characters in a children's book - Jacqueline Wilson uses lots of gemstone name e.g. Ruby and Garnett, Emerald and Sapphire. However they are not as widely read these days.

I like the names bit they immediately made me think of the Rainbow Fairies books (DD was obsessed with them for about a year 15 years ago and I still remember them very clearly!)

If I were the second-born child, I wouldn't be able to shake off the thought that my name wasn't objectively my parents' absolute favourite name for me, but rather it was chosen mainly to match my older DSis.

Jet is fossilised monkey puzzle tree which has become carbon similar to coal (there's a whole museum about it in Whitby which I visited a couple of years ago), and amber is fossilised coniferous tree resin. It has been used like a gemstone but it isn't one. Neither of them are formed from rocks/minerals, which is what gemstones are made from.

I always thought they were fossils, but the internet has explained to me that fossils happen when minerals replace the organic matter. These are the same thing transformed. Every day's a school day! If I am ever in Whitby I will be sure to look up that museum, sounds interesting.

My grandmother was one of 16 siblings and the girls are named after gemstones until they ran out of ideas and went onto flowers. Then the boys are names like George, Reginald and Basil - no other herbs used either! It's a weird combination in a family tree if listed only by age but not by sex. If you've just got the two, why not. Have a rethink if you do have a third as boy's gemstone names are more difficult.

Maybe Jet or Onyx for a boy

Wasn't it about 20 years ago that Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby song was out? My classmate had that name and was about 16-not very happy about people always singing it at her!
OP, it reminds me of some ponies I had, but depending which names, people might not notice. Sapphire and Emerald would be obvious, some not so much.

Pretty much because it was released early 2007. I had a friend who loved Kaiser Chiefs and named her now 19 year old daughter Ruby. It was not a common name for babies at that point, but it's definitely grown in popularity since and has been in the top 30 given names for baby girls in Scotland ever since. Ten years before in 1997 it didn't even make the top 300.

I wouldn't think of amber as being a gem tbh. I think of it as tree resin!

Forgetting that though both names are okay together.

I use Amber as my dating app name 😅 I'm a jeweller who specialises in gemmology (and obviously don't want them to know my real details until I know they're good).
I inadvertently named my children Emily and Charlotte as I liked the names, not thinking of the Brontes until everyone pointed it out. Totally unintentional!

The only gem name I like on a boy is jasper, I already have a son and that’s not his name anyway

Feels a bit too much for me, I would expect people to judge too much (which I dont condone but we know it happens and I don’t want my kids to be collateral just to prove a point)

I already have a little girl called Ruby(so wouldn’t be twins) so was just trying to gauge whether anyone would give “Ruby and pearl” or “Ruby and Jade” another thought

I'd definitely connect it, possibly because I'm the generation who read that Jqueline Wilson book about twins called Ruby and Garnet. I wouldn't judge either way or have a negative opinion though. We know people who have children all with an S starting name, and someone else who has kids all flower names. I haven't linked my children's names but I don't feel one way or the other about it really, do whatever you like and think suits them!
