To be annoyed and offended at what this hairdresser did, and what she said about my hair? And should I complain to the owner, or just not go back?

So I have been to this particular hairdressing salon, 4 times before, (I go every 3 months for a dry cut, and 'Julie' usually cuts my hair.) My old hairdresser retired so I started going to this new one about a year and a quarter ago...

This time I had Lisa. (Julie had rang in sick.) For context, my hair is about 6" below my shoulders, and wavy/curly. It's thick and blonde and I love my hair.

I got into the hairdresser chair to sit down for my cut, and Lisa got the hair straighteners out, then spent about 15 minutes straightening my hair within an inch of its life! Several times I kept smelling burning hair, when she kept them on for too long!!! I kept saying 'my hair is burning, you need to stop.' She carried on, and didn't remove the straighteners for another 10 seconds, and kept chatting shit to her colleague who was a few feet away from her. She barely made eye contact with me, despite me trying to chat - several times!

Then - when it was all straight - she said 'that's much better now it's straight.' I said 'what? Why is it better?' She said 'it looks much better on you than the curly hair.' I said 'but that's my natural hair, it's curly and wavy.' She said 'yeah but it looks better straight.' Hmm It was 100% flat and straight because she's fucking fried it with the hair straighteners!

She then started chatting shit to her mate again, and proceeded to cut about half an inch off my hair, and a quarter inch off my fringe. No layering or feathering or any attempt to style it. She spent 5 minutes cutting it... And as I say, she cut it very little! Then she said 'all done' and walked to the till... (I could have done that at home, cut that tiny bit off! In about 2 minutes!)

And I don't believe she straightened my hair to make it easier to cut because it's wavy/curly, as every single hairdresser I have ever had, just sprays it with some water, and combs it through, to make it a easier to cut it properly. The silly mare didn't even cut it properly! And she charged me £45 for it. A shitty, non-cut, and half my hair fried!!!

AIBU to never go there again, and should I make a complaint? About the poor cut, her frying my hair, and her basically telling me that my wavy/curly hair is shit?! 2 pics included are 1) what my hair is like, and 2) how she MADE it look!

I think you should have spoke up at the time. I would not have allowed her to start with the straighteners in the first place

Thank you. It's easy for people to say 'why did you not speak up at the time?' But... I kind of did, I kept saying 'you're burning my hair!' and she kept ignoring me, and chatting to her mate... And as I say, she didn't even cut that much off. I wish I had spoken up more, and the more I think about it the more angry I am getting.

No. I do straighten my hair but go at times where I don't to give my hair a rest. When I go to the hairdresser if they touch it, I say no thank you, I don't want you using a hair straightener, I want my hair yo be natural thank you. They may just say sure or give me a speech of their opinion and I will say I understand your opinion but I still don't want a straightener used, thank you.

Your burning my hair = I don't mind you using the straightener but don't like how you are using it

I hear you OP! I've had the same said to me.

Applesonthelawn · 29/07/2026 19:37

It sounds very poor service because you are unhappy and she wasn't paying attention, but you really don't have to go along with it at the time and your delayed reaction has really muddied the waters in this case. I think you need to be more assertive in the moment and just chalk it down to experience this time.

Momtotwokids · 29/07/2026 19:49

I’m sorry I assume you are an adult. When she started burning your hair and you could smell it, that was the time to get up and complain. You were so surprised you just sat there. Why do some many on this site have no backbone?

dreamingofgoodhair · 29/07/2026 19:50

ILoveAGingerCat · 29/07/2026 15:03

What? Why would I put a picture of MYSELF up? Now THAT would be weird.

Because you’re asking people to comment on your hair and not showing a picture of your hair ?? No good getting all funny about your pictures taking a while to load - you do know why they have to be approved I take it ??

I prefer your hair straight . Definitely not a fan of the hair in first photo which is a style suited to someone younger.

There are not pictures of her.

principalskinna · 29/07/2026 19:10

I have not given any thoughts to being jealous of your hair.
I'd hate to have curly hair

No need. I have curly hair as do lots of people. It's partly down to my ethnicity.

YourWildAmberSloth · 29/07/2026 20:14

You can complain if she did a bad job. However it might be a bit hard to swallow the complaint that you didn't want your hair straightened but sat there for x minutes watching while she straightened it. 'You're burning my hair' is not the same as 'wtf are you doing, I don't want it straightened' as you get out of the chair.

Beachtastic · 29/07/2026 20:19

I think you should take pity on her, OP, in the MN #bekind spirit, as she is clearly possessed by Satan.

I have the straightest hair in the world and woud kill to have curly hair.

I once got stopped in a shopping centre by some sales reps who asked me if I'd like them to demonstrate hair straighteners on me. I thought they were taking the piss at first, but later thought maybe they thought I had CHOSEN this dull hair and worked hard for it and was prepared to fork out good money for the necessary equipment!!!!!!!!!!

Someone as delusional as her should not be let loose on anyone's hair, so I'd definitely complain if I were you.

Good luck! and enjoy your fabulous curls 🤩

@Beachtastic I'm sorry that you had to tolerate rude ignoramuses too! (Just like this -not very good-- hairdresser I was unfortunate enough to encounter!)

As other PP are pointing out, for the hairdresser to straighten your very curly hair (if that's really your photo) to become as straight as the second photo suggests, it would have taken more than just a few minutes with the hair straighteners -- plenty of time for you to understand what was happening and to say you weren't happy with it and (even if she wasn't listening to you), for you to get up and leave. That you remained for the full session is on you. I'm questioning what kind of conversation you had with "Lisa" before she went to work on your hair, especially since you've not been seen by her before. It's completely normal for a customer to have a conversation about what they think they'd like to have done, even with a hairdresser who you've been going to for the last decade. I think this is on you, unfortunately. Either that, or this entire post is fake.

seven201 · 29/07/2026 23:15

I can see how this happened. I’d have probably been the same - sat there letting it happen but not knowing why!

I have pretty easy hair and there’s a hairdresser in walking distance to my house so for ease I go there. Problem is my usual hairdresser left years ago and my ‘new’ one always gives me a slightly shit haircut but I’d feel too rude to ask for a different person and too lazy to go elsewhere. It’s ridiculous! I’m not a pushover in normal life, but put up with it in all hairdressers and tip when I’m not happy. God I need to sort that out!

Be brave and call and speak to the manager.

Seajaye · 30/07/2026 08:21

It's hard to understand Why didn't you just say I don't want my hair straightened, I just want a trim, if that's what you wanted. The fact that she ignored you didn't stop you from standing up and saying this isn't what I wanted. By all means complain, but I'm not sure it's going to do much good unless you need to decide what remedial action you want taken before you complain I.e do you want refund, or a fresh trim or what?

ILoveAGingerCat · 30/07/2026 08:38

Little bit of an update. I have decided to put in a complaint. I rang to speak to my usual hairdresser - Julie. I'm going to see her around mid morning.

I just rang and asked if Lisa is in and whoever answered said she's not in til Saturday now. Once I had established Lisa - who is the one I am pissed off with - wasn't there, I asked if Julie (my usual hairdresser) is there, and she came to the phone. I asked her if I could pop in and see her mid morning today as I need to have a chat with her for 5 minutes. So she's seeing me at 10.30am today.............

Oh op, just put it down to experience. Hairdressers are poorly paid. Next time if getting a dry cut say please don't straighten first.

Use it as an exercise in developing some assertiveness skills rather than complaining about someone on minimum wage.

I didn't make the photos via AI. I got them from Google. As I have said multiple times on this thread. So your point is futile.

Wish I hadn't bothered posting them now though, with the ridiculous and ludicrous reactions from a handful of posters. No help or advice for me, or any empathy or anything, just banging on about the photos, being 'silly' and 'ridiculous' and moaning about them being AI. 🙄

How did the 10:30 meet go?

Growlybear83 · 30/07/2026 11:03

@ILoveAGingerCat Seriously, how did you expect people to respond? You didn’t stop a hairdresser from straightening and burning your hair for 15 minutes when you didn’t want her to do so, and then paid for the service without complaining! Of course you can’t now go back and complain when you accepted the service provided by paying for it at the time. The issue of the photos is just really weird - how can you expect anyone to comment objectively on what the hairdresser did when you’ve posted photos of two random women youve found on the internet (presumably without their permission) rather than your own hair.

ILoveAGingerCat · 30/07/2026 11:04
