To be annoyed and offended at what this hairdresser did, and what she said about my hair? And should I complain to the owner, or just not go back?

So I have been to this particular hairdressing salon, 4 times before, (I go every 3 months for a dry cut, and 'Julie' usually cuts my hair.) My old hairdresser retired so I started going to this new one about a year and a quarter ago...

This time I had Lisa. (Julie had rang in sick.) For context, my hair is about 6" below my shoulders, and wavy/curly. It's thick and blonde and I love my hair.

I got into the hairdresser chair to sit down for my cut, and Lisa got the hair straighteners out, then spent about 15 minutes straightening my hair within an inch of its life! Several times I kept smelling burning hair, when she kept them on for too long!!! I kept saying 'my hair is burning, you need to stop.' She carried on, and didn't remove the straighteners for another 10 seconds, and kept chatting shit to her colleague who was a few feet away from her. She barely made eye contact with me, despite me trying to chat - several times!

Then - when it was all straight - she said 'that's much better now it's straight.' I said 'what? Why is it better?' She said 'it looks much better on you than the curly hair.' I said 'but that's my natural hair, it's curly and wavy.' She said 'yeah but it looks better straight.' Hmm It was 100% flat and straight because she's fucking fried it with the hair straighteners!

She then started chatting shit to her mate again, and proceeded to cut about half an inch off my hair, and a quarter inch off my fringe. No layering or feathering or any attempt to style it. She spent 5 minutes cutting it... And as I say, she cut it very little! Then she said 'all done' and walked to the till... (I could have done that at home, cut that tiny bit off! In about 2 minutes!)

And I don't believe she straightened my hair to make it easier to cut because it's wavy/curly, as every single hairdresser I have ever had, just sprays it with some water, and combs it through, to make it a easier to cut it properly. The silly mare didn't even cut it properly! And she charged me £45 for it. A shitty, non-cut, and half my hair fried!!!

AIBU to never go there again, and should I make a complaint? About the poor cut, her frying my hair, and her basically telling me that my wavy/curly hair is shit?! 2 pics included are 1) what my hair is like, and 2) how she MADE it look!

To be annoyed and offended at what this hairdresser did, and what she said about my hair? And should I complain to the owner, or just not go back?

that's what I said, it's just so Naff and the dress and oh my God
I wonder what you put in to get that

I googled
"Cinematic portrait of a beautiful woman with voluminous blond curly hair, wearing a off-shoulder light purple silk dress, glowing golden hour light, dramatic rim lighting on hair, blurred city skyline background at sunset, high detail skin texture, shallow depth of field, 85mm portrait lens, photorealistic"

RVectensian · 29/07/2026 17:27

In the moment is one thing, but it sounds like you say there for many moments. And if all you said was that she was burning your hair that's not you telling her you didn't want it straightened.

I'm far from bolshy, but I think even I would have said "I don't straighten my hair" the moment she got the straighteners out.

I get it OP. It is hard to complain in the moment and we do just trust that the 'professionals' know what they are doing. I know I was brought up (probably to me detrimate) to smile, nod, say thank you and don't make a fuss. You absolutely should complain though so hopefully she will check with her clients in future about what they are happy and unhappy with.

Well done for draining a reservoir to make a stupid AI pic of your "curly/wavy" hair

What a ridiculous comment. 🙄 I got the 2 photos off Google. I did NOT 'drain any reservoirs!'

Is your hair actually burnt OP?

I cannot understand that you are obviously dead against straightening your hair, but did not say a peep. I don’t think you can complain about it now actually. But talk to the owner, because she should have been focused on you and not chatting with someone else.

Edited because I can’t spell.

I prefer your hair straight . Definitely not a fan of the hair in first photo which is a style suited to someone younger.

Another ridiculous comment. 🙄 I don't care if you 'prefer my hair straight.' It's NATURALLY curly! And these are sample photos, they are not me, so how do you know what I look like, OR how old I am?!

Thankfully most comments on here have been sensible and helpful!

Yes, exactly. It's easy for people to say 'yeah but yeah but, why didn't you, you should have done, you should have said etc etc.' It's a bit different when it's you, and you're the one sitting in the hairdresser's chair. As has been said, they have the power when you're sitting there. And many posters have posted about similar experiences they have had, and many felt powerless, and then pissed off and angry afterwards.

I think the photos took so long to show because one is AI

Only you can own the feeling of feeling powerless, because you were far from powerless.

I've had this and the cut is aways pointless because it will look rubbish when it springs back into curls...definitely complain

Exactly this. It's a stupid idea to straighten curly hair and then cut it. Especially a fringe.

BillieWiper · 29/07/2026 17:55

I can't understand how she got as far as straightening it and burning it. As soon as you saw her plugging the straighteners in, you should've just said 'No thank you. I don't want you to straighten it'. I wouldn't just allow her to ignore my instructions and carry on. She wouldn't even get a chance to start?!

Then you paid her at the end despite being massively dissatisfied. Without telling her you wanted more hair off and layering etc? She can easily cut more off so why not tell her to?

I'm sorry, I just can't see how it all happened really. But definitely ask your regular stylist to fix it. And only book in when it's the one you like.

That's a horrible experience - I have no idea why she would say such unpleasant things about your natural hair. It seems likely she's lacking in skills to cut hair in its natural wave/curl pattern.

Personally, I would make the salon owner aware of what happened. That's bad service and likely to drive away customers and the owner should know.

If she's damaged the curl pattern with the straighteners, you could try using Epres (or K18) on your hair. I've found both of those really help with regaining curl pattern.

Thank you. I think the comments saying my hair looks better straight pissed me off more than the shit haircut and the fact she was as ignorant as fuck. Who the hell does she think she is, telling me that my NATURAL curly/wavy hair doesn't look as good as when it's been ironed as straight as a poker?! She's probably jealous!

I would complain and also never go back. Find someone who does proper curly cuts, they make a big difference

No.

So why on earth did you post them? Were you fantasising about looking like them? And why the boobs? It all seems a lot of nonsense then you kept getting angry that the photos hadn’t appeared, then announced they weren’t you anyway! WTF? 🤣

Thank you. I didn't even know there were hairdressers who specialised in curly hair. However, I think any hairdresser who won't even attempt to cut curly hair, and has to fry it straight to cope with it, shouldn't be in the job!

Good grief. Why do you care so much? Confused Why are you offended by boobs? You seem weirdly offended by me and my posts. Very strange. Confused

I hope your evening gets better.

Weird thread. The AI images are pointless, and I'm not convinced if your hair really looks like the first picture that you could even get straighteners through it!!

Curly hair is not really a style, its a characteristic of your hair, however old you are, It will still curl. I'm honestly not sure how old the op is, but age doesn't come into it, I'm late 50s I have thick curls, get lots of compliments. I'm never straightening my gorgeous medusa hair.
