To be annoyed and offended at what this hairdresser did, and what she said about my hair? And should I complain to the owner, or just not go back?

If I could smell my hair burning I’d move away and refuse to let her continue.

Sounds very annoying. I might not go back again but would not bother complaining, as the most likely outcome would be wasting more of your time and getting even more annoyed. It depends on how good your think Julie is really as to whether I would give a salon another chance that tolerates stylists chatting shit in front of clients and rushing rather than making sure the client is happy.

You’ve also firmed up exactly what you do and do not want, so it will be easier to communicate that clearly (and firmly if required in future) with new stylists in the future. I’ve certainly been more annoyed with myself after the event when this kind of thing happens but what can you do other than learn from it.

Curly long hair is for younger women? That’s one helluva white take on it.

@ILoveAGingerCat I do struggle to wonder why you let her straighten your full head of hair. My dd has hair like yours and I straightened it once for her, took an age.. Using GHD's too.

I think YWBU to not get up as soon as she started using them. YANBU to still make a complaint. She clearly wasn't confident enough to cut your type of hair and damaged it in order to be able to do so.

Definitely complain to the owner now and she if she’ll do something about it.
I paid £50 to my hairdresser for a full head of colour and a blow dry and she always asks me how I want it styled. My hair is down to my waist and I always ask for a nice bouncy blow dry with a few waves put through. She always does it perfectly!

i go for a dry cut to a curly specialist and leave it to him. Sometimes he asks if he can do a wet cut. Never ever straightens it. Too many hairdressers can’t work with curly hair. Not to mention when they try to style using a tiny blob of serum and then wonder why it’s frizzy! Load me up with hard hold gel

Definitely complain now, but I'm with the posters finding it bizarre you didn't stop her straightening your hair, and you just paid without saying anything.

It's not her hair, it's random AI so we have no way of knowing what her hair looked like before and after 😂

If you can find one I would go to a hairdresser specialising in curly hair cuts or someone that has years of experience cutting all types.
Im a fellow curly girl and have had some shocking cuts, a couple that have insisted on straightening it to cut it into a style, which is completely pointless as once it’s curly again it doesn’t sit in the same place.
I was recommended to my current hair dresser by a fellow curly headed person, and she’s great.
I usually keep it long so the weight keeps it down a little after some horrendous shorter cuts but I’ve currently got a layered curly bob which I love.
The fact that you didn’t tell her to put the straighteners down and you sat there allowing her to do it makes it a little tricky to ask for a refund, I would complain about her attitude and the chatting to a colleague throughout if you wanted to make a complaint.
I definitely wouldn’t return.

That's a horrible experience - I have no idea why she would say such unpleasant things about your natural hair. It seems likely she's lacking in skills to cut hair in its natural wave/curl pattern.

Personally, I would make the salon owner aware of what happened. That's bad service and likely to drive away customers and the owner should know.

If she's damaged the curl pattern with the straighteners, you could try using Epres (or K18) on your hair. I've found both of those really help with regaining curl pattern.

Having been an Elective Curly since about 1979 (I lived in the age of the perm fortunately) and now having Actual Natural Curls following hair loss post sepsis, any hairdresser coming towards me with straighteners would be taking their life in their hands.

You let her do it, and then you paid at the end - signifying that you were a satisfied customer.

I know you have said above that "it's easy for people to just say you should have stopped her" but if you genuinely smelled burning hair, you should not only have stopped her, but got up and stormed out! (without paying a penny)
