AOl and mumsnet no longer get on

I am loving Google Chrome

AOL is crap anyway lol.

It could be awkward to test if they have no machine running the AOL browser. It's not quite like just downloading Safari (yuk) or some other browser off the web, after all.

Couldn't log in this morning via AOL, so signed into My Mumsnet no problem then clicked talk, needed to log in, did so and 'shock, horro' am posting via AOL.

Have added 10.1 desktop to the 9.5 package.

Go figure.

I'll have to take your word for it, dnft, as I got

TypeError: dt.getData("application/x-moz-tabbrowser-tab").linkedBrowser is undefined

(and the tab I had dragged has just disappeared completely, not back to where it was...)

when I tried... Have to admit not having tried it until today (but only recently shifted this PC to v3.6.3 so it may not have worked with what I was using)..

AOL 9.5 screwed everything up. I had to completely remove it from my laptop.

But I have just downloded Firefox. RESULT !

got firefox, doing ok. have installed a new copy of AOL 9.5 and added desktop 10.1 but no joy

And you can then drag & drop that new window to the end of the tab bar, to reinstate it as a tab!

And, just tested it & you can drag & drop into the bar at the bottom to create a new window

WebDude, you can make a tab a new window in FF, by right clicking on the tab & selecting "open in new window' from the menu!

Oh I'm so glad someone else has had this problem.

Actually emailed MNHQ to see what the problem was.

You can get in via internet explorer though and ignore AOL.

Took me about a day to work that out ... DD would have got there in 30 seconds

Unfortunately, even that's not guaranteed.

After 8 years with a mail address from UltraNet (my USA ISP) they were taken over and that e-mail address was then wiped.

I'd suggest getting an e-mail account with anyone other than an ISP, so you're able to change ISP if you wish.

(For a business, it makes most sense to get their own domain, whether .co.uk or .com, and in the past an AOL address was looked down on).

For mumofmonsters - I've not found a way to drag a tab from one Firefox window into another window. You can certainly move a tab into a new window on its own. (Mind you, it's the only thing I really liked from Chrome! If someone can explain how to bookmark all the tabs in one go, I'd be grateful. I often have 40 to 60 tabs open when browsing, depending on what I'm doing.)

I just remembered that the AOL virus software thingumy was really efficient at finding errors. They were called AOLxyz ....

There have almost always been some sites where AOL browser won't work properly. Some sites even have special notes for AOL users (mostly suggesting they use another browser).

It's perhaps worth checking any AOL-specific discussion areas for whether others are having problems with latest release. Closest I've come to it is helping an ex-neighbour (when his line was upgraded to 2 Mbps and his USB modem would not work, first AOL said he must contact Microsoft, and then AOL said he must contact his PC manufacturer, and washed their hands of his problems. I lent him a router and he was back online in 10 minutes.

Have always been cautious about any ISP which forces you to install their software. Most of them (eg Tesco) just add bookmarks and brand the browser to promote their own name but AOL went so much further with their own software, leaving it more awkward for any support to be given independently.

downloaded Firefox tho really want AOL to work, have done a remove and am reinstalling a new downloaded copy so fingers crossed.

Firefox, Opera (yes, even Google Chrome)... all are worth using, all have various pros and cons.

Things I like:

Firefox can bookmark a load of tabs in one folder, in one go (and later, re-open all of them in one go).

Firefox has hundreds of add-ons that can assist in different tasks, blocking adverts, examining web sites, etc.

Firefox can also display a page using the Internet Explorer display engine, via some add-on, in case something gives errors on Firefox.

Opera can synchronize notes and bookmarks so if you have your own PCs in different places (office, laptop, desktop at home) any bookmark you add can be seen on the other PCs too. Also notes (text) made via one machine will be visible on the others too.

Opera has a 'speed dial' feature (copied via an add-on for Firefox) that allows you to have up to 25 favourite sites on a grid (3x3 up to 5x5 depending on how big your screen is). A thumbnail image is shown for each site so you can quickly spot the one you want (eg bank, BBC, Five on Demand, etc)

Chrome allows you to pull tabs from one window to another (or to create a new separate window).

I still use Netscape v7.2 (Firefox is based on some of the code from Netscape). I started using Netscape in the mid-90s and still have some floppy disks from my first (US) ISP with Netscape 1.1 (for Windows 95 I think, or Windows 3.11)

Linnet - when i had AOL i couldn't download the software either. It didn't matter though as i used firefox.

Seriously all you IE users - go and download firefox. Tis muuuuuch better!

huh,you mean you aren't using google chrome! Its fab espec for netbooks!
