What SINGLE thing would make Mumsnet better for you?

Right, I will start:

I do wish people would spend more time reading than posting. So often you have a thread (quite often an AIBU) where someone says "I haven't read the thread but YABU" or more often lately the highly unnecessary YABVVVVVVVVU when the thread has moved on hugely since the op, the arguments have all been had, everyone has bitched and moaned, made up, had a cup of tea, done a bit of ironing. If there is a slightly sparky looking OP and hundreds of posts on a thread, why not take that as a clue that the thread may well have moved on, questions asked and answers given, and read before you post?

Mumsnet local IMHO (sorry!) is not that great if you want to use it for places that you may be visiting on holiday or for the day etc.

It's more for local folk. You should be able to 'browse' areas for things to do rather than having to make it your local

I'd like the ability not to have to log in every time! I've ticked the "don't log out" box - but if I exit Mumsnet I am logged out and if I go back in an hour or two later I have to login again. There are plenty of sites where your login details are saved so if you enter you go straight in. Would be good if that were fixed here too!

haven't read the whole thread (sorry first poster!) but it is 26 pages long!!! Anyway, what about sections devoted to the big cities? Urbanbaby.com has NY,San Fran, LA, etc and it's useful if you need to find somewhere to go/something to buy/how to get to, etc.

I'm going to have two, because that's how I roll.

  1. People would be banned from saying "off you fuck". It's not big, it's not clever and it's very rude
  2. My posts would be highlighted so that people could appreciate my genius and insightful comments, and make appreciative noises along the lines of "that was GENIUS Abs" "you are so hilarious Abs" "you totally changed my mind on that one, Abs, thank you very much".

I'd also like a 'What would you do?' (WWUD) section in the same vein as AIBU but where you could just ask for straightforward advice rather than there needing to be any particularly unreasonable element in there.

There seem to be more and more of these creeping into AIBU where people ask for advice because it is a busy topic so you know you are likely to get a response but hopefully it would also take the sting out it that sometimes happens on AIBU.

Would like a topic that is shortcuts to threads that have been highlighted as discssions of the day but are no longer.

On more than one occasion I have not been able to find threads that I had originally accessed via the Discussion of the Day links. I've either forgotten to 'watch' them or only later wanted to refer back to them for something and I discover that I can't ever find them again. very frustrating.

Think it could sit quite happily in the Mumsnet Stuff section - the threads themselves wouldn't need to be moved there, there could just be a link to them...

It would be good to have a 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' at the side to show you agree with what someone has said, without having to repeat it.

Edit the threads to get rid of the bitching, abuse and swearing. I don't bother with forums any more because of this, it's tiresome, scary (because these people are parents) and you're losing a lot of credibility. If I mention mumsnet to friends now they think I must be slightly deranged - "that's the website for mums who are nutters". Only on this thread because I saw it flagged up on home page whilst looking for weaning tips and wanted to contribute to this subject!

I too would like to be able to edit my posts - nothing worse than when you hit the post button and find a spelling mstke misstake mistakk that you can't spell!

But people saying wtf, or ffs, or fgs, without thinking of the other person's emotional state. There are other ways to get someone to see your point of view, without ffsaking them

If you use Opera as your internet wotsit instead of Internet Explorer it has a built in spell check.
