Anyone else feel as if they have just 'grown out of' Mumsnet?

I was intrigued by the 2009 Mumsnet 'Census' - with large numbers of 30-somethings IIRC... and I just got around to thinking, "perhaps you really DO just 'grow out of MN'?

Chances are, a lot of people join before their first baby (late twenties/thirties?) and then stay with it through toddlerdom and infant school... but then it all gets a bit samey doesn't it, and real life begins to be much more interesting again?

Of course there are 'Teenagers' topics and all that, but I just find there are fewer and fewer threads/topics of interest & relevance to me personally these days...
(pushing mid-forties, kids age 7 & 10)

So, if that's true....where do all the old MNers go??? Is there another site somewhere for us? (and puhleeease, don't say the mouldy word...)

?

what was it a discussion about fio?

notnowbernard · 22/02/2010 17:06

Don't think I've 'outgrown' it... but still fairly new, really

(Actually just counted - have been on MN 3yrs nearly!) prob not so new then ) But still feels it sometimes, as MN is so huge

I don't consider myself to 'know' anyone on here fantastically well, IYKWIM (am not in a quiche )

But do find myself sighing quite a lot at crappy repetitive threads. But choose to ignore

there are lots more threads but people don't seem to discuss much anymore. just alot of in-talking iykwim, miss some of the more interesting debates.

maybe i should start posting on the mailonline site

Orlando · 22/02/2010 16:52

(Is that awful? Does that make me a MN parasite?)

Orlando · 22/02/2010 16:51

MN has outgrown me, definitely. When I joined (in about 2003?) it used to take at least 10 minutes for a thread to drop off the bottom of active convos and now it seems you've no sooner finished posting than everything's moved on.

I hardly ever post anymore, but I use MN all the time for research purposes - planned a trip to Paris entirely from threads on here, discovered fab and gorgeous skincare range (Avene)and regularly get ideas for books to read, films to watch, presents etc. Post in Teenagers most often and still find that a v v valuable resource for advice and support.

So, I've changed the way I use MN but I'd never give it up entirely.

NormaSnorks · 22/02/2010 16:42

ooh - more posts, and no fighting or swearing.... (so far) just like the olden days!

I agree with a lot of what has been said. The nice supportive stuff IS still there, but it's impossible to find if you only log on for a little bit a day.
As others have said, I'm tending to visit less and less, as it used to make me feel good, have a laugh, feel like I've shared a joke or learnt a tip etc. Now, more often than not, I leave feeling angry, or slightly shocked (at how nasty some posters are) or dare I say it, a bit disappointed (in a pedant's corner way) at the level of contribution and lack of debate.

I originally joined in 2000, and started using it mostly in 2001, so I guess I'm ripe for a change.

These days I keep thinking more and more that it would be a healthy decision to de-register and leave to find whatever I used to get from MN somehwere else .

Good timing- just posted on One Of Those threads PMSl, will now go hide PMSL

Ta for that

pagwatch · 22/02/2010 16:25

Hey Peachy
just caught your comments here..

I think I avoided last week to see if I missed it or not and it made me realise that I have to be far more careful in how I use it.

I try to be more disciplined about avoiding the threads that I know will make me cross but then I also get annoyed that it means that the sneering sorts get to be more obnoxious with even fewer people arguing.
But i have to remember that that is not my problem and whilst some subjects are intensely personal to me, the wanker winding everyone up is probably just enjoying the sound of their own voice.

I would miss MN and several lovely posters - and i would really miss the humour but i get to the point where I can't hear biggoted spoutings without it affecting my view of the world - sometimes I log off feeling that the world feels more hostile than when I logged on. And that really is not good.

[just wittering now]

PeachyPeachyEverPreachy · 22/02/2010 16:17

I'd be inclined to agree carrotfly, albeit sorrowfully.

But then I am of the brigade that regrests biscuit-era bitterly

Carrotfly · 22/02/2010 13:11

I think its changed recently though FioFio, the invasion of the meeedia in particular.

I think I'm growing out of it and I've been here for 5 years now. I think the support is still there, but I think you have to dig a little deeper for it now.

The labels people use are interesting, as is the tribal nature of this place. I'm just starting out in psychology, so in that respect I do find some of what goes on here fascinating. Reading as a mum/person some of it is downright frightening, then I remember that it's the internet and doesn't accurately reflect the real world.

I wish we had moderators here though. Sometimes people need their heads knocked together, or they need to be told to use the search/google/their brain before posting. I'm just a big meanie online though!

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 22/02/2010 11:22

I can only see Pets and Camping atm (oh and site stuff, you can NEVER hide site stuff).

My mn is an oasis of calm and dog & tent peg banter.

I tell you a topic cull is more cathartic than cleaning out your garage.

Hullygully · 22/02/2010 11:20

This sort of thing makes me very choleric.

bibbitybobbityhat · 22/02/2010 11:16

Oh sorry, my mistake . Thought they felt a bit ... erm ... human

pagwatch · 22/02/2010 11:14

and [ouch]
... could you put me down, I have no lapels - those are what used to be my breasts......

bibbitybobbityhat · 22/02/2010 11:10

Now look here Pagwatch

you cannot leave, see?
I will not allow it
you are of the same vintage age-wise as me
and you always speak sense
and if people like you go people like me will be left dodging the crossfire from all the shrieking extremists
ok sunshine?

PeachyPeachyEverPreachy · 22/02/2010 11:02

Pag that does feel like my experience lately

I've gone from knowing that MN support gave me the stregth to get me through both DX's, to (a few eyars down the lijne) realising it's actually making me feel bad about things I am already unhappy with but stuck with, and am using it to pick scabs and indeed getting very bitter and not the person I want to be.

MN can do that, it has the power. I am backing off majorly, but I honestly don't think I wpuld have had the same experience a few years ago. It was more about support and tehre weree less angry people looking for someoone more vulnerable than them to target and make them feel big.

Mn has indeed become the school playground.

Luckily realising this is a Moment: I now know where I am and can deal and avoid.

NoahAndTheWhale · 22/02/2010 11:01

I've been here for 6 years - started when DS was a few months old and now also have DD who is 4.

I don't go on the weaning/breast and bottle feeding threads. Like reading birth announcements and occasionally find myself lurking on antenatal (no good reason ). I find myself reading all sorts of threads and joining in here and there.

I am getting quite into Education and presume I'll stay being into that for quite a while.

Weather is always a good one too, although that is something I talk about in real life too

pagwatch · 22/02/2010 10:53

I am older than a lot here but I am just reachingthis point.
I think I needto do a big thread cull.

I get tired of how nasty people are too each other on certain topics.
Of course any thread has the capacity to go tits up but there are certain subjects where some familaiar names just turn up to be fucking vile and it annoys me because any chance of discussing, any chance to challenge the nasty stereotyping that is just destructive, gets lost.

So suddenly you end up in this weird alternate existence where instead of a group of parents trying to do their best for their kids you get a Beano-esq version of life with boatered Tarquin vying with hoodie wearing thugs...or lentil weaving, chakra cleansing breastfeeders vying with greggs sausage roll munching f-fers... selfish WOHMs or lazy SAHMs...
Its just all such bollocks.

It makes me think we sometimes get the MPs we deserve

displayuntilbestbefore · 22/02/2010 10:38

I have read some cracking books after MN tip offs in the books thread so that's worth something

displayuntilbestbefore · 22/02/2010 10:36

lol at Hotel California

But surely no-one really thinks that MN is actually cool? It's an internet forum at the end of the day so we all have a bit of saddo in us to log in and actually care about what some anonymous person might have said
I don't come on here because it's cool in any way, it is far from it IMO and there are some dodgy threads and way-out views on things from people I know I wouldn't mix with in RL but it's eye opening to see what some people really think and that's probably what keeps people registered and dipping in now and again.
That and the occasional but priceless times when a thread is pure banter and I can laugh out loud as it rolls along
If anyone starts to see it as being anything serious, then it's time to get off

PeachyPeachyEverPreachy · 22/02/2010 10:26

Me too

Am in a phase of MN fatigue: it used to make me feel good, it doesn';t now so am questioning it.

But boyo'snet / 7-12 yr old boys would fir mew perfectly, and for the foreseeable furture too LOL (my boys aged 10, 9, 6, 22 months)

SixtyFootDoll · 20/02/2010 20:27

Norma agree with your topics, esp cleaning of rugby boots!!
