we feel have very offensive names?

I don't want my dcs looking over my shoulders and seeing certain nicknames and asking what they are.

Thank you please

Better?

theyoungvisiter · 29/09/2009 09:50

Actually there is a tech solution for hiding offensive names in front of your children.

Basically you have to go to the little icon in the corner of your screen and click on SHUT DOWN, then turn off the computer.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 29/09/2009 09:49

I'd vaguely prefer that posters not have posting names with swearing in, but that's for the protection of my own delicate sensibilities . I have no intention of letting my DCs read MN over my shoulder as (a) it's MINE and (b) much of it is unsuitable even if all the posters were named IckleFluffyBunnikins. I wouldn't want sweary names banned, though -- I think we are adult enough to self-regulate on here and there are only a couple of posters who use them as a long-term posting name (and my delicate sensibilities can cope with that).

Acanthus · 29/09/2009 09:49

We are not netmums.

Don't go on here while your kids are watching if you think they are old enough to read but not old enough to see swear words.

Simples.

QueenOfFuckingEverything · 29/09/2009 09:48

Sorry [snort] was to hobbgoblin pointing out my ambiguous grammar.

But there are people now saying they don't want to see fuck in a MN name either. Well, if the majority find it offensive I will alter it. I like MN and I get lots of support and give the best advice I can. I don't want to offend and alienate people over something as small as a fuck in my name.

Blackduck · 29/09/2009 09:47

reality - don't be so bloody patronising.
MightyToosh - thank you for elegantly summing upwhat has been going round my head...

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 09:47

It is not just children who take offense.

I do too.

I dont want to see it.

So, mumsnet can EITHER not allow really rude names, or give us the power to hide posters we dont want to see.

itsmeolord and hullygully and the rest, this means you can see whatever name you want to see, and I dont have to see the ones I dont. It shouldnt bother you at all, as nothing need to change for you.

waitingforbedtime · 29/09/2009 09:47

QS: They might go and form their own identities based on names they see on mumsnet.

Seriously?! I think not and if so then I would do more worrying about why mumsnet usernames featured more highly in my child's life than umpteem other more 'appropriate' things that should such as being a child and doing childish things.

Personally think it's great that there is not so much censorship on here. Hiding posters wont work, threads wouldnt make sense?!

crokky · 29/09/2009 09:46

This site is for adults.

It is up to you to supervise your children IMO.

Too many rules will ruin the site.

TsarChasm · 29/09/2009 09:46

I agree with pesto.

Not so much wrt dc, yes this is really a site aimed at adults I guess. I get that and am not easily offended. Live and let live.

I'm just not sure how to have a convo when the person I'm talking to may have an overly aggressive/offensive name. Also names like that, to me, do not sit comfortably in some threads where the subject might be serious or sensitive.

But I suppose it's hopelessly 1950's to object in any way shape of form, so I'll get back to my Woman's Weekly.

MarshaBrady · 29/09/2009 09:46

Don't have a problem with fuck, though don't really use it.

Or any names with fucker for example, they are fine and good.

Only one name, which is currently the topic of another thread, is annoying. Plus it will be archived forever mn...

PestoLovelyMonster · 29/09/2009 09:46

I don't mind what people call themselves but I would quite like the facility to hide them if I deem them too offensive in the vicinity of my dcs.

I have no problem with freedom of speech etc, but just want to limit exposure as I feel necessary. I think it would be sensible.

TheMightyToosh · 29/09/2009 09:44

I agree - there are a couple of names on here with f*ck in them and I don't like to see it.

At the risk of getting flamed, I think it is slightly different if the word appears within a post, a) because it is less obvious to someone glancing (i.e. not bolded and in a blue stripe!) and b) because it is usually there for a reason, not just gratuitous in a name (yes, I know there is an arguement that this is a double standard, but to me it is slightly less offensive than just having it as your screen name).

I would like to see a ban on offensive names personally.

I don't agree with the argument that it is mumsnet, not kidsnet - I'm not a kid but I still don't want particularly want to see it.

Tee2072 · 29/09/2009 09:44

Perhaps instead of allowing names at all, MNHQ could assign us all a random string of numbers. After all, what is offensive to some is not offensive to all.

For example, I may find a name with the word monster in it offensive because if my son reads it he may believe that monsters are real and posting on the internet and that could give him a complex for life.

Oh, and if that was too subtle for you? I think this is the most ridiculous request I have ever seen on MN. And that's saying a lot.

As hobbgoblin said, this site is for adults. And adults fucking curse.

itsmeolord · 29/09/2009 09:43

But most people don't have an issue with your name. In fact on the other thread some posters were saying your name was inspired/amusing etc.
They were having a go at one poster in particular and I think that is just nasty. And childish. Particularly when that poster was accused of being attention seeking and in actual fact it was someone else who started a thread about them which she then took in good humour.

theyoungvisiter · 29/09/2009 09:43

perhaps we could have a site banner saying "it's half term potty mouths", then people could self-censor if they felt so inclined?

lol @ seeing the odd fuck on screen. some pay for that sort of thing

hobbgoblin · 29/09/2009 09:41

i attempt to asterisk if it's school hols. but often forget. these fs and cs, they're only words.

theyoungvisiter · 29/09/2009 09:41

[snort] at hullygully.

Could they be Cath Kidston? (the pinny I mean, I don't think she's done branded tranquilisers... yet.)

QueenOfFuckingEverything · 29/09/2009 09:41

I am against censorship on MN tbh. There are other fora with swear filters if people really can't deal with seeing the odd fuck on the screen.

That said, if most people think there should be no sweary names then I'm not going to hang onto mine just for the sake of it.

choccyp1g · 29/09/2009 09:40

Nobody moderates out the rude words, but I for one, would type Bl*DY, rather than the actual word. Many posters amend words to "farkin" or "sht" etc. Quite rightly, I feel.

itsmeolord · 29/09/2009 09:40

ROFL at HullyGully.

Stop picking on the poster from the other thread.
And stop letting your kids get so bored that they are reduced to reading mumsnet over your shoulders.

Agree with others, this is a site for adults, last thing I worry about when typing a post is whether or not a child will read it.

hobbgoblin · 29/09/2009 09:39

simple solution to prove point: time for a name change anyone?
