Yes we all know that it refers to a vagina. If you want to be medical about it, what it is in reality, then no it's not offesive, but used in context as a swear word, then it is; to many people, if not you.

I'm not lacking in objectivity any more than you are. I don't like people piling into have a go at any one person in particular in the way that posters have been today.

It is what it conjures up. Say we substitute for Vagina. Fine. It would in my opinion, still be offensive in the context. Vagina Whacker, Cunt Whacker. So what it might be seen as a sexual practice, and as a grown up, I can deal with that.

But, it is a lot more violent than just a sexual practice. And the name can be seen in a non sexual context. And that is what I find both offensive and degrading, and humiliating.

No, I just genuinely don't understand why people find cunt offensive.

I'm quite interested in the argument that adults here find it offensive. I am not one of those adults. Clearly some adults are actually offended but certain strings of letters forming certain offensive words - generally referring to genitalia or coitus.

Question: Does the sight of the above (genitalia and sex) also offend? Do those in couples jump into bed naked and shout 'ready' to their partners just in case they catch a glimpse of any thing that the swear words in question might conjure up image wise?

Do such persons not have mirrors above their beds then as I once did in a weird Art Deco house I lived in? I found it quite intriguing but then I say Fuck and don't care if my mind races away with me and conjures up rude and offensive images.

totally different to swear sometimes in threads...but to have an offensive name, (and the "C" word is still very offensive imo) is wrong....this is an adult site, but so what..? i find it offensive.

Personally I find half the world starving to death a little more offensive than a word that for some bizarre reason has been designated "swear." And I can't believe that people still find "cunt" the most offensive of all. What is so hideous about a word for vagina? Really?

A while back a lot of people made the point that they disliked seeing swearwords in a thread title because it jumped off active convos and made it hard to avoid seeing.

A petition thread was started tdlo ask people to stop doing this and, by and large, they did.

Why not just start a thread requesting people to self-censor a bit more and see what happens?

No Censor ship is fine, and in fact ideal. But that requires posters to be smart enough to censor themselves, somewhat. That is what self moderation is.

I would prefer not to have any kind of censorship. And I love the way that MN lets us Reclaim The Cunt -- I mean get the word back from its horrible misogyny and use it as a source of affectionate fun.

I am going to expand a little on what TsarChasm is saying.

When somebody is fecklessly twirling around on threads dishing it all sorts of opinions and advice, with no regard to his or her inappropriate name, I worry that such posters may skip merrily onto a DV support thread, and cause some distress.

Surely, as you are all talking about one poster, you could have asked that poster if she would consider a namechange. Rather than having a bitch at her on one thread and then bringing it onto another new one.
