I'm not sure that the backing exists; it's a few people who care enough to post, and better to know who they are IMO.

I think back to 4 or 5 years ago and there were some pretty unsavoury exchanges, esp at the last general election. I don't think that in terms of politics, MN has really changed. It certainly has in terms of people jumping on tabloid bandwagons and mourning celebs and that sort of shit.

It is an interesting subject and one which will be debated for many moons I expect.It has been the nail in my MN coffin to tell the truth.I have namechanged for this as am not keen on the hooha when people 'go'.I am surprised though on a site awash with intelligent and giving women that this one person who has showed distaste for everything from immigrants to inclusive schools has such a backing.Times have certainly changed

I am interested in the rights of 'lurkers' vs 'posters debate - it's a good point aitch. I could probably be described as a lurker - have been a member for 3ish years, log on most days, but post very infrequently. I love mumsnet - it makes me laugh, sometimes makes me cry, it widens my horizons, and it puts me in touch with intelligent women when I think I will go stir crazy if I have to play for the fiftieth time that day.

I also use mumsnet as a valuable resource tool - it's often the first place I come when I have problems with my dds, usually before google! And I frequently read threads that are older than a year. But they tend to be threads on health issues, breastfeeding, children's behaviour - never relationships/aibu for example. I have found it incredibly useful, and would be sad if it disappeared through removing the archive.

But... if I was a poster that had posted my views/personal details on threads then I would also want to be able to remove/edit them if i saw fit - especially as the site constantly evolves and changes. Why should I, as a lurker, have more rights over content than the person who actually wrote it?! What might feel ok to post today, may not tomorrow either due to changes in personal circs or in the MN environment. I think to prevent this (or as in MN case, ask posters to 'ask permission') is backward and makes me feel very uncomfortable. The MN archives must be enormous (I rarely search and get less than 500 posts back in response!), so the argument that you could 'dilute' the boards doesn't wash with me. I cannot see the reason why MN couldn't introduce an 'edit' function that allows the reader to see that the post has indeed been edited. Many other forums do this without detriment imho.

I also think that there is a case to remove the archives on certain (more sensitive?) topics like relationships for example.

FWIW (while i'm doing one of my very rare posts!) I don't like the DM development. And while it may be within the 'rules' of MN, I feel that the spirit of this community has somehow been violated. And this makes me sad.

I'll go back to my lurking now!

Absolutely what MrsBarbaraKingstanding has said. Particularly "I think turning up on athread just to dig at a poster you dislike is very unpleasnt". Far too much of this goes on, and the irony is that it is the very people who shout about bullies who do this all the time.

yes well I think you perhaps need to search a little further back to find the highly offensive posts - before the DM kicked off

I think think of others that were banned from MN for much less offensive (but still offensive non-the-less) views so not sure how you've got away with it for so long.

hmm - obviously not been on that many of DP's threads then. Because I've seen some horrible behaviour - and certainly not eccentric (we've got our fair share of eccentric posters ).

Serious question: mnhq do you ever look and see what people use the search function for? Has there even been a study, with a pie chart?

I bet it would be quite interesting.

Do lots of people look for mentions of their own name?

Is it used properly, like a library, or is it mostly troll hunting?

I'm quite interested to know.

agree with bk, dp is mad as a box of frogs but not a bully from what i've seen.

When I say stay, I mean archived. Everything can stay obviously. I have no objection to folk talking about whatever they want, hence my love for the hide topic function.

Anything childreny related can stay, you know behaviour and weaning and all of that.

Holidays and camping can stay.

I actually think DP is needed on MN.

There is far too much of a 'group think' on MN imo, a beleif that 'we are lke this' and 'we think like this, and I think any group or organisiatiom needs to have their assumptioms challeneged, hower difficult, infiruating or however much the alternative viewpoint angers you.

I'm sure there are many mnay silent majoritu MNers who think along the lines of DP, and I admire her gumption to say it on here and take the flak it generates, whether I agre with her not.

On the last few pages on this thread it's not DP who looks like the bully.

As a random aside, can I ask the powers that be why so many of their topics are archived and not deleted into the ether.

I do worry about the internet filling up a bit, and filling up with inane old bobbins.

I mean, the ante and post natal threads...yes yes yes...not having a go, they are lovely and supportive etc but do you really need to store them?

And don't get me started on AIBU, all threads there should be consigned to the bin after 1 day, maybe even less. 30 mins to lodge your moan (or snippy retort) and then...poof it's gone.
