Mumsnet - please can you sort out all the Jade posts?

Its horrible. Regardless of what she did/didn't do, she was a mother. We are all mums and God forbid we will ever have to go through something like this, knowing we will leave our kids behind and not see them grow up.

Threads like this are not in the spirit of Mumsnet and yes, I can hide them if I want, but to be honest, would like to see them deleted. I know policy is to let the debates run with minimum intervention, but tonight its going too far

Thanks,

Puss

i know, qs. he was a wee boy, their son, that does seem very different.

AitchTwoOh · 22/03/2009 23:41

the tradition? surely forums haven't been around long enough to have real traditions? besides, i've been at plenty of funerals where people have talked openly about the character flaws of the deceased. you'd want to hear what people were saying about dh's stepdad.

what happened on these threads today? if people were saying that crying about jade goody etc was weird then... inflammatory and i wouldn't have done it today but it is a bit weird and you can't stop people from posting that tbh. plus, questioning people's reaction is not slagging off jade, surely? or were there lots of posts saying terrible things about jade? (i'd be inclined to think it'd be nothing they hadn't heard, mind you.)

I dont see what good passing on condolances from some parenting forum would do. She was a controversial persion. One cannot expect people to post in a manner that gratifies just so that entire threads can be passed on. What we have seen here the last week has possibly been a fairly accurate mirror image of how the population in general view her.

I dont think you can compare the Camerons and the Goodys.

mnhq have met cameron, and the mn masses had a live webchat with him. there is some sense to passing on a message in that instance, but we can't all be expected never to say anything bad about a public figure in case they die.

wannaBe · 22/03/2009 23:23

I wonder whether, instead of requests to have only one thread as has been the case a few times, whether a facility could be implemented like the search facility?

So instead of it being to search threads it could be like a filter? so you could have a box to hide threads that contained these words and perhaps have another box so you could say specify how many times a word should occur before the thread were hidden.

then click "hide threads" and voila they'd be gone.

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 22/03/2009 23:21

Aitch, it's cooled down a bit now - earlier, it was bonkers.

why not just one thread for everything? There was only one McCann thread wasn't there - I didn't read it but I should imagine that had people from both sides of the fence (and those sitting in the middle) on it.

And I fear it may stretch out at least 2 weeks, 1 week to discuss todays sad news, then another week to discuss the funeral,........

2shoes · 22/03/2009 23:15

wannaBe we still have the funeral and jack the pratt going to court to be sentanced to come

AitchTwoOh · 22/03/2009 23:14

have they been deleted? i'm not getting them in my active convos. i wonder if i've somehow (happily) put the relevant topic in my hide list?

wannaBe · 22/03/2009 23:13

oh the sheer number of threads is quite astonishing I agree.

But there has been suggestion further up the thread that one thread should be created for outpourings of sympathy only and that anyone else should refrane from comment.

Tbh, I do wonder whether this would all die down anyway depending on how the media continue to react? Now that Jade has died there's really not much else to say is there? so the lack of reporting may well lead to a lack of discussion...

gibbberish · 22/03/2009 23:12

She's gone.

It's terribly sad. (seriously)

Can these threads be ended now??

FAQinglovely · 22/03/2009 23:10

I do find it rather frustrating that there are so MANY of the bloody things???

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 22/03/2009 23:10

wannBe, it's not that - I'm actually someone who can't quite understand the massive public grief thing. But tonight was beyond that - it was wall to wall Jade posts, and every single one of them was exactly the same argument.

It's just a waste of bandwidth, and it's both very dull, and really pretty cheap.

QuintessentialShadow · 22/03/2009 23:10

Time for bed.

Ledodgy · 22/03/2009 23:08

I agree with Wannabe (but I still love you as well quint )

thumbwitch · 22/03/2009 23:05

I really hope that MNHQ can do something to stop the nastier old threads about her being re-bumped - perhaps rather than deleting them, you could just make them too big to accept new messages, regardless of size, so that they can't appear on Active Convos? Or is that too nanny state?

I was absolutely bloody appalled to see that one about being delighted to see the back of her - quickly twigged it was an old one but still - outrageous! I am no fan either but certainly can empathise with her family's loss today of all days.

QuintessentialShadow · 22/03/2009 23:05

I am not saying people should not discuss. Only that people whe get worked up by all the threads should not have to see them all over the site and then post unsympathetically simply because they are fed up with the topic matter.

wannaBe · 22/03/2009 23:03

but there are peopple who genuinely do not understand this outpouring of public grief for a total stranger. And because they do not get it they are branded discompassionate/unfeeling.

This is not about slating the woman, this is about whether people have the right to discuss the reactions to her passing and events that led to that. You can discuss the events surrounding her without actually slagging her personally off, iyswim.

This is a public website. You cannot simply tell people that they are entitled to voice only one opinion or to shut up.

IMO there does not need to be a platform for greif on this matter. She was not known personally to any of us, therefore after the "it's " there is nothing more to be said in terms of the sympathizing either.

So either one thread should be created to discuss whatever it is people need to discuss, be that to sympathize or to question why people need to sympathize, or the discussion of Jade should be banned altogether.

2shoes · 22/03/2009 23:02

oh do
we all need a lol

QuintessentialShadow · 22/03/2009 23:00

Kay - agreed. It has been to the point where I wondered what sort of horrid mundane thread I could start to get everybodys attention over to it!

(such as dhs willy stuck in vacuum cleaner, or other such sillyness, I even tried with a pirate sex thread the other day!!!)

QuintessentialShadow · 22/03/2009 22:58

Sure, they will. But no chance of that happening when so many people jump on the threads which are there, in the manner beanieb outlines below.

I have one new MN motto in life (as of this moment):

ignore - ignore - ignore.

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 22/03/2009 22:58

I've got no problem with the initial thread announcing she had died, and the expressions of condolence and sadness on it. I don't mind that there have been threads in the past few weeks that have discussed the wider issues and the different opinions on the matter.

But tonight has been absoluely bloody horrible, and the 'active convos' list has been a steady stream of bizarre bumped old Jade threads and threads about threads, and it's really just unreadable.
