A few notes on the new look and functions

There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

Can I get the old mumsnet page back????Please

Threadworm · 30/01/2009 12:29

So long as we get the full thread titles back I can live (reluctantly) with the other changes.

Does anyone know why it had to be changed? I used to run a website for an organisation and the web design company was always on at us to 'refresh the brand' with a cosmetic update. Its obvious why the design company wants to do that -- more dosh. But why does an organisation want to tinker so frequently with a successful format (unless it is to add new functions)?

Buda · 30/01/2009 12:28

Bet all at MNHQ were DREADING this morning!!!!

nettie · 30/01/2009 12:27

No its not just you I've got those big white margins too and I don't like them either.

foxinsocks · 30/01/2009 12:26

thanks btw!

foxinsocks · 30/01/2009 12:24

I don't want that big wide margin on the left and right because it means I don't get enough words in the middle. Is that just me and my settings?

mishymoo · 30/01/2009 12:16

On a far more serious note, where have the Games gone?

JustineMumsnet · 30/01/2009 12:12

Yes we are going to put the colour change back on clicked-on links in Talk - mistake on our part - but it may take a day or two as it's fairly complicated I'm told.

(apologies!)

GrimbleTheResourceful · 30/01/2009 12:10

I like it too

Tiggiwinkle · 30/01/2009 12:09

Are we going to get back the colour change in active convos when we have viewed a thread?

RGPargy · 30/01/2009 12:02

I like the new look! Thanx Tech!

Watusi · 30/01/2009 11:56

Thanks Justine, that';s great news

JustineMumsnet · 30/01/2009 11:49

We are looking into the disappearing Threads I'm Watching issuette - I've got the same problem and mine's been lovingly assembled over 8 years - so we'll definitely fix that one .

CountessDracula · 30/01/2009 11:49

did anyone mention not being able to change the no of threads in active convos? It is stuck at 10

MarsLady · 30/01/2009 11:48

Ok tech... now your hunka burnin love is a pile of ash!

I looked for a thread that I'd started in Other Subjects pre-change and now post-change it has vanished. I'm not happy at all.

JustineMumsnet · 30/01/2009 11:47

The chopping of thread titles is an error - apologies - we are fixing now.

frisbyrat · 30/01/2009 11:46

I can't work out how to get my 'Threads I'm watching' back (lovingly assembled over the course of two years). I've tried refreshing/ ctrl f5, shift f5, and nothing works. Please can someone kind just tell me how to/link me to an explanation?

Threadworm · 30/01/2009 11:44

(stops at 'grandpaarets' in active conv)

Threadworm · 30/01/2009 11:42

Here's another example of the subject matter of a thread being obscured by the truncation of the title.

Watusi · 30/01/2009 11:39

Thanks tech, for all your work.

I have moaned about the thread titles being cut off and wanted to give you an example of why it's fairly important.

This one

stops at the 'too many' bit. I didn't know whether I'd be able to help or not - it could have been about paracetamol, sleeping pills...anything really. It could have been about a suicide attempt, really sensitive stuff for some people and they wouldn't know whether to click or not iyswim.

Is there any chance the titles could appear in full?

Thankyou

BitOfFun · 30/01/2009 11:36

Sorry if that offends anyone, I do feel a bit ashamed of it, but it's the way I feel

sfxmum · 30/01/2009 11:34

ok thanks not major moved from classics to new and might leave it like that using Firefox and everything looks ok

BitOfFun · 30/01/2009 11:33

Help me! I am trying to get used to this, and I'm sure it will be fine, but it is taking a lot of tinkering from my iPhone. The server is safari if that helps?

I have it on mumsnet muted just now, and the page layout is ok, but I'm convinced the text has got smaller. Also, despite having "no" checked for the special needs topic, the threads keep coming up in active convos anyway. I feel sort of guilty hiding them, but one of my own kids is severely disabled, and her stuff is as much as I can cope with- seeing problems other people are having with SN kids just makes me feel really sad, and I come on here to not have to think too much about it IYSWIM, so I want to be able to change that but it won't let me...any tips?

thisisyesterday · 30/01/2009 11:10

sfxmum, several of us having the same problem!

don't know yet if it is something we can fix, or something they're working on

sfxmum · 30/01/2009 10:57

can I just ask

generally I am fine with the changes, it looks clean BUT previously the threads on active convos that I had clicked on would change colour thereby making them easier to spot

is there any way of getting it back? is it to do with my settings/ laptop?
