Well, I am a member of two other sites where you have to log in to read posts. With the result that I hardly ever post there and don't really "recognise" people there like I do here. One of them also has avatars and tickers!

Anyway - this thread is about whether being a registered site would improve it..

followed by a long posting silence while other posters respond with "are you ok? please let us know you're ok? does anyone know the op in rl? maybe someone could go round there...."

I usually stay well away from the serious troll/drama threads.

And I agree with tmmj I think some people enjoy being a part of the drama as much as those who are creating it. So much so that they fail to see it's all attention seaking crap.

I think most threads where someone is posting regularly in the heat of a crisis is a troll.

gorionine; if you get reported you get an email from mnhq....i've had one (maybe 2? can't remember)...i'm not sure if you can be reported without ever hearing from mnhq?...i've never reported anyone.

I found MN by googling Piedro boots - and found Fio discussing how to repair scuffs in purple ones! But I thought the whole idea of chatting away on the internet was bizarre and a bit sad....look at me now.

oh, I know what you mean...and I have vague memories of that multicoloured food one...now that was funny well, if we are thinking of the same one...it was the one where only food of a certain colour was being eaten?
I am not completely bypassed by troll humour....there are very different levels of trollings....and yes, some people just seem to lurve the drama and get so personally involved, well...that is, imo, a bit over the top...
I think it's those that could possibly be true and you really want to help and than it's all been for a larf...that is when they are not funny....

Mn is what it is because it is for many different reasons. The open-ness is one, as is the reputation (which is that it is fast, funny, witty, often acerbic and has a demographic that is a high ratio of wohms and higher-educated women...and that's not my opinion, it's the facts and the reputation as stated in the press, which leads to big new membership). The style, too.

I just think everyone needs to be aware about personal information, and to know that there are times when all sorts of people will want / need to reserve some conversations for more protected means of communication - whether that be e mail, MSN or a friends using an off-the-peg clunky pro-board (after all anyone can do it), or a yahoo or FB group.

There are things about me that could be v easily recognisable - I can't post about things that involve other people in my life and would compromise their privacy - so I don't!

Agree it the onus is on the individual posters to not reveal too much.

mildmannered....I think it depends...I mean, sometimes you just start asking yourself why you are wasting your time on replying....of course you don't have to read....but in general I read a post, until I know better, as if there is a real person behind it with a real question/problem...and sometimes it does get annoying when it all goes into a...oh, was only a joke....

obviously some are seriously funny and those are what makes mn such a fun place to be (well, a lot of the time )

Can I just Hijack for a bit? does any of you know anyone who's been reported? It is just to know what does actually happen? are you made aware that you have been reported or does NMHQ block your access to the site after being reported a few times? Is it possible to have been reported and not be aware of it?

Sorry, It is just that I am becomming a bit paranoid reading this thread, I never really think about trolls and tend to give people the benefit of the doubt but I seem to be in a minority, are troll really overtaking MN or have they always been there?

I think sometimes people might be accused of being troll because they come with unusual situations but do really need help I a not sure ther is a way to be fair with everyone.

I guess it depends on what one considers to be a troll.

Obviously there are the funny trolls, and the serious ones who hit people up for money and emotional support etc. But apart from that I would put money on there being posters whose apparent lives are nothing like they are portrayed on here, purely because it's easy to be something online that you're not in rl. If you make up a life are you any less of a troll just because you're not using people for money?

tbh...i haven't seen that many serious trolls on here....most of them are joke threads.

dp but mn hq can only recognize you from your IP address while your registration remains active. Once you delete your registration your details disappear with it.

So it's easy for pegulars to create duplicate registrations to troll, to then delete those registrations and no connection can be made.
