OP posts:

No I don't get it. a) we're having a private golf club but probably won't be asking you to join, okay??? V b) not saying anything at all so as to not cause upset.
Really you'd choose a)???? I wouldn't.
Maybe that's cowardly, but I wouldn't want to intentionally casue hurt. If they then found out anyway and were hurt I'd be sorry they were hurt but still wouldn't change how things were handled.

LIZS · 06/01/2009 17:01

I can see private discussions working best for certain topics - like Relationships, Special Needs, Work Issues, Bereavement - where the op is likely to need fairly specific advice from those of similar experience rather and the hit and miss of it appearing randomly in Active Conversations and not want it available to full public view.

my wireless doesn't toast marshmallows

harumph

pooka · 06/01/2009 16:59

Also Prufrock, it is my understanding that some people who were on the original GF group were NOT invited onto the new othersite. So even at the very beginning there was a judgement being made of "oldies" on the GF site.

But that was probably referenced in thread 3 or 67 and I haven't the energy to track down post.

allnewcontrolfreaky · 06/01/2009 16:59

justine, glad you had an enjoyable week off and that it was untroubled by any thoughts of mouldies and glad too to have your thoughts.

have to say that for me though prufrock's post is as someone said definitely "interesting" but "damn good"?? really suprised to see you posting that. it was in reply to a long post by rhubarb which made far more sense and didn't shagging analogies.... but maybe you havent had the time / wish to read the whole thread....

TWINSETinapeartree · 06/01/2009 16:58

No BigGitDad I will look it up though as dp and dd love astronomy and I always feel like the thick relation.

ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 06/01/2009 16:57

YTC I do wonder if it had been more open- if it'd just been oh i'll speak t you later some people cahtting... p[robably the reference MN oldies reinforces that its all MN types iyswim? Does that make sense? I suspect if it had been handled that way most poelpe wouldn't have had an interst; making something secret rather gives an entity an air of mysteriousness / exclusion doesn't it?

However it is time to move on now. I can empathise with Custy and rhubs by default but beyond that tbh.....

TWINSETinapeartree · 06/01/2009 16:57

It must be all the vomit stillstanding

stillstanding · 06/01/2009 16:56

Twinset, you are on a roll today! What a excellent analogy.

BigGitDad · 06/01/2009 16:56

twinset did you see the thread about astronomy last night. Brilliant it was and it was a good example of what you are saying. I was glued to that thread and learnt a whole load. (albeit stuff I will probably never use but that's not the point!)

chipmonkey · 06/01/2009 16:55

Those evil card-makers won't let me join their group! They say you have to make cards to join!
Cows!

chipmonkey · 06/01/2009 16:54

X-posts Pru.

chipmonkey · 06/01/2009 16:54

But Prufrock, the analogy of shagging someone's wife? Are you honestly saying they did something as awful as that to another MNer?

SinkingontheTitanic · 06/01/2009 16:53

I cannot see what place private groups would have on mn. Justine, you clearly wish we would all shut up about the one private site we know about and which we are variously upset about because it is elitist or because we have been left out of it. Well imagine the grief that will be caused when all sorts of private groups are springing up all over mn. My way of looking at it is that they will just lead to more cries of elitism or why was I left out of this?

And I realise none of my posts are being rsponded to because I am using this name and no-one knows who I am, so I will have to leave it there.

TWINSETinapeartree · 06/01/2009 16:53

The joy of mumsnet is that you can get drawn into something that would not naturally interest you (like this thread) and either learn from it or help someone else.

Private rooms sounds like members of the family hiding away all over the house watching different crappy sky channels on a portable. Much nicer to be gathered around the fire listening to the wireless toasting marshmallows.

Prufrock · 06/01/2009 16:52

you obviously missed "They also don't want to upset Bob, especially as some of them still like him, and you never really know exactly what goes on in relationships, and Algy's wife might have had a good reason to shag around"
And the fact that I don't necessarily think infidelity is an unspeakably bad thing in all circumstances should be known before reading.

notnowplease · 06/01/2009 16:51

This is like one of those 'my child didn't get invited to the party'threads.

TWINSETinapeartree · 06/01/2009 16:50

Thans BigGitDad

TWINSETinapeartree · 06/01/2009 16:50

I can just about see the justifiation for the SN one as one does exist and although I have never visited it I get the feeling it is not bitchy and elitist.

But beyond that I am not sure tbh and feel it is very open to being abused and cause exactly the same hurt s mouldies.

BigGitDad · 06/01/2009 16:50

Actually I agree with you twinset. I have got alot out of mumsnet and as a dad think it's marvellous.

stillstanding · 06/01/2009 16:49

I agree, Twinset - private boards would be completely contrary to the Mumsnet ethos.

BigGitDad · 06/01/2009 16:48

Twinset you are completely right. Everyone is as good as their last post.
And your last post was rubbish
Sorry I could not let that one go....

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/01/2009 16:47

Having a disagreement with them is very different from implying that they did something unsavoury though, which is what your post did.

JustinExcelsisMumsnet · 06/01/2009 16:46

Well twinset, we don't think private groups have to be bitchy or elitist - they can be really useful and fulfil very specific needs - eg the special needs one. But will start this in site stuff as it's a whole new discussion. Maybe in a wee while though, as we're nowhere near setting anything like that up...
