OK. Spent Faaar to long 'catching up' on all this and seems to be a case of two steps forwards, six steps back. I can see things are evolving in their own way but i have not kidded myself about any solution to this. MN is used by many people for many reasons and many people are upset about allthis for many reasons. It is misleading to summise that is all a campaign about supporting individual posters. I am horried about the personal issues and obviously feel for anyone who has been personally targetted or caught in the crossfire - on either side.

I have stated elsewhere and curiously feel the need to re-state my points before I fill my face with cake (with rum in it) and roll over to sleep. I have deliberately waited for a lull in the 'proceedings' before posting this:

I have been a MN for around 5 years and I namechange every-so-often because I know a few people in RL that are MNs and want to keep as anon as poss. I dont consider myself to be a less worthy, valid or deserving poster than anyone else here I abhor the implication that posters have to be 'known' to be invited onto Mouldies. I lurk much much more than I post, though have given and benefitted loads from MN.

I feel 'uncomfortable' that some MNs that have been well supported by the indistinguished posters such as myself - such is the spirit and strength of MN. No, i dont consider that ANYONE should feel beholden, BUT its easy to feel as though us lesser and unknown posters have a certain, 'usefulness' to suit. as said before, I am certain that no-one took votes as to whether or not to accept any assistance from the 'unknowns'. Any assistence has been given happily and freely and unconditionally, as it rightly should.

That capped off by mouldies saying, get over it, this is childish and such-like is unkind and nasty. That, matched by others saying 'im not sorry, i have not done anything wrong' is insensitive, at best.

This feels like i am reading my eulogy on this Mouldy Episode. I have resigned myself not to comment further, but to nod, shake my head or simply not click on this thread after today.

I am saddened further that some mouldies feel the need to deregister because of whats been said on this thread. What i dont get is those that have said, i post on other threads besides this, but because of THIS thread i shall de-register. Doesnt make sense to me. Why not just stop posting on this thread, but to say that MN in general will be worse off without the benefit of their experience and 'wisdom' by their poster leaving is a bit sanctamonious and takes the mouldy thing full circle, not? And that is in the spirit of.....what exactly?

I have probably missed something crucial that i wanted to add, but im trying to discipline myself and lurk elsewhere as I am getting quite claustrophobic by this mouldieness.

Onebat, about your point that the only ethical position is not to have started Moldies at all:

I see what you're saying - if there'd been no Moldies, there'd be no hurt feelings - but it's not that simple.

If you (I don't mean you personally by the way, I mean one generally) say that the Moldies webboard shouldn't exist, you're in effect telling people how they can communicate with other people away from Mumsnet.

That has its own ethical implications, about freedom of speech and association. Nobody has the right to control how other people communicate off board.

There would be uproar, for example, if anyone tried to suggest that MN-ers weren't allowed to email, MSN or meet other MN-ers. Yet all of those methods of communication will exclude the majority of MN-ers.

In fact, the exclusion aspect is often the point: people want to talk about things they wouldn't disclose to the whole world, which is what the www effectively is.

It's a difficult problem with no perfect solution, but seeking to control MN-ers individual friendships isn't a viable option either.

You're right, Quattro - but there are also some who have definitely disappeared, presumably now posting only on Moldies, and those are the posters to whom I was referring.
