Sorry techs, but at 12 noon it is taking around 30 seconds to load a thread and 42 seconds from pressing post to message being shown

and that's just one count.

The site is really too slow at the moment for it to work.

There's probably a good reason why you are using document.write for the ads, but as these are wrapped in td's with no width in a table with a relative width could this be slowing down rendering because the browser can't work out how wide anything is supposed to be until it has downloaded and run the scripts?

I always set a fixed width (and height) for containers wrapping inserted images to avoid exactly this problem.

I agree it does seem really slow at the minute. Sometimes it speeds up but very frustrating at the mo. Glad it's not just me. Thought there was something wrong with my laptop.

lapin, I'm afraid you've got completely the wrong end of the stick. For a start, in my last post, I said it is NOT busy, hence it's most likely an ad problem. I don't always just say it's busy and shrug my shoulders!!!

Other times that it's been slow it is because it IS busy. People hypothesize about the reasons for a particular problem and they're not right, so I post to paint a clearer picture, because most people appreciate that. It being busy isn't an excuse but when I say it was busy it is the reason for the slowdowns. We can tell when it's busy, and I don't just mean we can see when a big argument is kicking off. We're a bit better organised than that, despite outward appearances! We've got a screen on the wall that shows us round the clock how busy the server is, how much bandwidth is being used and so on. Every 5 minutes the server writes to a file precisely what processes are running, how many database queries are happening, how many requests per minute we're processing, everything.

I don't want to make any promises at this point because you'll just nag me as to exactly what and exactly when, but I will say that we are (and have been for a while) working on various solutions to the problem. As soon as they're in place you (all gazillion of you) will be the first to know!

There doesn't seem to be any obvious connections to specific ads on my computer. This page has taken almost a minute to load and has only an AVIS ad to the right of the screen. The previous page didn't seem to load any ads at all (or maybe it gave up trying after 1min 30 secs ). The page before that only had a small Thomas Cook ad at the very bottom of the page.

it just goes blank or has a timed out page

and i have blocker too on my laptop

not my pc

and get the same on both

i did point out that you can often tell when it is happening because you get the evidence of multiple postings by different people on different threads

analyse when those occur and you will get some info

There might be something in the ad thing, I'm abroad too and so get different ads, like Anna, and I haven't had the same problems.

I bet Tech's hypothesis is right - that it's an ad - because here in France I don't get all the same ads as you lot (lots of French ones) and I have been having no problems at all.

The server is not busy at the moment. If more than a few people are finding it slow then the most likely suspect is a bad advert. The difficulty is telling which one. I've just loaded this thread a couple of dozen times and seen a variety of ads, none of which slowed it down.

If you find a page load is slow, make a note of which ads are shown when the page finally appears. The two likely culprits are the one at the top of the page and the one on the right of the postings. If we see a pattern emerge (i.e. everyone says "when it happens to me the advert for X appears afterwards") then we can get that ad removed.

Very slow for me too. Gave up on it last night and this morning and was forced to dabble with RL. All other sites I use are working fine.

Oh yes, last night was really slow, I thought it was just our internet connection but everything else seems to be working fine. Still a bit slow now, but better than it was.

I've got an 8mg broadband connection and no issue with news sites with multi-streaming video bollocks ..

It may well be my laptop .. but I dinnae think so cap'ain
