Can we clear up emoticon use please (think i may have been a tad paranoid)

does "thanks " mean:

"thanks, i shall think about that and take it on board"

or

"thanks for nothing you unhelpful cow"

?

i understand that some people mean as vague or whatever... but i always read it as 'youre talking shit you piece of crap'
maybe i need to deal with persecution ishooos?

I use it sarcasticly, or in a raising one eyebrow at ds way.

Custy's pensive emotion suggest is good - me likey.

I doubt it means the first, but it doesn't necessarily mean the second either. It depends on context really.

It could mean, "thanks, but you haven't really understood my question/dilemma" or "thanks, but you are stating the obvious and I have already tried that" or even "thanks, that would be useful if I had all the time/money/patience in the world, but I don't".
