Can we clear up emoticon use please (think i may have been a tad paranoid)

does "thanks " mean:

"thanks, i shall think about that and take it on board"

or

"thanks for nothing you unhelpful cow"

?

I use quite a lot. It's the same as the face I would be pulling in RL. I use it when I'm unsure.

If I saw it posted in reply to another post, I would take it to mean "I don't think so" or "yeah, right"

Happens to everyone on here sometimes Lissie, I think. Feels crap but it's not really personal - she doesn't 'know' you and she may have meant it in the "I'll take it on board" sense anyway!

I had one of those in a reply for something I'd posted and took it that she was saying, I'm not sure why that person acted like that, like it was strange. I hope the person in question wasn't being nasty

Depends in what context - if you asked "is my DH cheating on me" or something like that, and the person concluded yes he was, then you may reply "thanks " but not aim the at her kind of thing...

It could even mean "thanks, but you have made me feel even more inadequate than I did before". I am often tempted to use it when people post things about motherhood being all about sacrifice in response to someone who is clearly struggling.

I'd say it depends on the context of the conversation. IMO.
