Have to agree with slubberdegullion.Feeling acutely suicidal is a psychiatric emergency and if a GP was worried they could refer to the local Community mental health team or, if out of hours, the on call psychiatrist.
They would absolutely be seen that day

foxinsocks · 30/05/2008 16:53

objectivity, that's not been my experience. There is help out there. Whether you choose to access it or not is another thing....

In terms of counselling, I'm aware there are waiting lists but there are GPs, A&E departments etc. where you can take yourself if you feel you aren't coping.

TolpuddlapinMartyrs · 30/05/2008 16:52

No, I do absolutely agree with you, I don't think it should be the responsibility of MNHQ or MNers, and I though the thread yesterday should have been deleted (at the risk of incurring others' wrath, there was a degree of ghoulishness - did you see the thread the other day where the OP was distressing and some twat came on and berated her for not updating everyone ). I'm just making the point that people DO have real life friendships formed through MN, and often in times of extremis, so if you know that there is someone out there who could actually get hold of a suicidal OP - can you in all conscience not try and get hold of that person?

So for the sake of argument

Cod: I'm going to top myself

Everyone: No! Call the Samaritans!

Cod: No

and no-one who knows your real name, or knows that Finbar is your RL friend, knows about it and is able to CHOOSE to help.

It's very difficult. I can see both sides.

objectivity · 30/05/2008 16:51

I agree with spritzer grazia dilemma.

Slubberdegullion · 30/05/2008 16:51

sorry local mental health team, that should be.

Slubberdegullion · 30/05/2008 16:49

objectivity. My DH is a GP, I asked him this morning "what would you do if someone contacted you or saw you because they were considering suicide?"

he said

"I would contact the local health team and that person would be seen that day".

Now things may be different in different parts of the country, but was he was saying is if someone is expressing ideations (think that might be the term) about suicide, it is not something that health teams file and sit on for months.

Treatment for chronic mental health problems is a different matter I'm sure.

expatinscotland · 30/05/2008 16:49

the problem is, websites CAN and have been sued over such issues before.

i think it's treading on very dangerous ground and i hope MNHQ is getting legal advice about these types of posts.

wessexgirl · 30/05/2008 16:49

Agree that these threads need to be referred somewhere more appropriate as early as poss. Wouldn't say the Samaritans though, because their remit is quite limited - maybe NHS Direct or a mental health service.

CodGuevara · 30/05/2008 16:48

i dont lik em
am chcco snob

objectivity · 30/05/2008 16:48

Real life practical support is virtually non existent in real terms FIS unless you have near hung yourself.

brimfull · 30/05/2008 16:48

CodGuevara · 30/05/2008 16:47

foxinsocks · 30/05/2008 16:46

practical support is REAL life objectivity

this is a WEB SITE

and people on here are not trained to deal with suicidal people

CodGuevara · 30/05/2008 16:45

i ahet it all
eeveryone getting all excited and orgasmnign oev th delight of it all

Slubberdegullion · 30/05/2008 16:45

lapin, I can understand where you are coming from as mn is seemingly coming to the rescue in these situations.

I do however really feel for those regular mners who are identified as knowing the OP, then there is this frantic calling, e-mailing texting etc. There is a whole load of pressure on some poor sod who may well be sat outside in the sun drinking a spritzer and reading Grazia, to suddenly leap into action and drive round to people houses or alert the police.

You yourself (I think) said recently

"I don't know what to do?"

CodGuevara · 30/05/2008 16:44

ok so here we are

OP
" i am so sad i am feelign there is no poitn carrying on"

lapin ( on suicde watch) " go and ring the samartians theyw ill halep oyu"

OP " ah but bal balbla

" lapin ( for it is she) goa nd ring the smartians"

objectivity · 30/05/2008 16:44

...that mumsnet offers

foxinsocks · 30/05/2008 16:44

RIGHT at the start

it is not our job or role to deal with suicidal people

MNHQ can identify the poster from their registration and if they can't, then so be it. We are not making it into a guessing game. That's just ridiculous.

TolpuddlapinMartyrs · 30/05/2008 16:43

how would they know, TE? I could sign up as Joe Bloggs, they'd be none the wiser

objectivity · 30/05/2008 16:42

tiredemma absolutely agree. However, are you aware how difficult (years or months at the vry least on waiting lists) to actually get that help?

Mn is very much for problem sharing and I would consider suicidal thoughts are something of a problem. We all proffer opinion here on all manner of topics on which we have no qualification or verified expertise.

Granted, there may be a sense of liability but it is every individual's choice whether or not to post in response.

Also, I have called the Samaritans before now - when I was concerned about the welfare of a friend and also my own state at the time in response to this. Understanding as they were, for a vaguely intelligent and lucid individual as myself I frankly got more out of the cup of tea I made myself afterwards.

Not every person who is feeling desperate wants merely sympathy - some of us want the collective creativity/hope/practical and emotional support and intelligent consideration of the issues at hand.

tiredemma · 30/05/2008 16:42

ugh- know not no.

tiredemma · 30/05/2008 16:42

MNHQ would no who they are, couldnt they 'intercept' and advise to contact samaritans /cmht?

CodGuevara · 30/05/2008 16:42

at the start

TolpuddlapinMartyrs · 30/05/2008 16:41

Taking yesterday as an example though - posters were able to identify the OP from the thread, get hold of someone who knows her, and that person took actual steps which helped (trying not to go into too much detail). IF MN had pulled the thread, she wouldn't have gone to the Samaritans - she's been told to do that before.

At what point do they pull the thread? After the person has been identified? After someone has contacted her? or right at the start?
