Is it just me or do the ads really slow this site down?

When I go to click I often get messages like

transferring from ad.adviva.net
and the like

It's REALLY slow, other sites aren't, is it me or mumsnet?

heh you're informative and funny.

now where's that button??

YetMoreTech · 29/03/2008 01:28

We could add a "shoot her" button I suppose...

barbamama · 29/03/2008 01:11

even if it's not, I'm getting effing sick of seeing that brat singing on the First Choice ad!

YetMoreTech · 29/03/2008 00:43

The bottom line here is that in the vast majority of cases, slowdowns (where a page takes more than a few seconds to load) are usually a problem with a user's own internet connection or computer. And they're usually transient. That's why you see a few people saying it's slow and some people saying "it's fine for me" and indeed, thousands of people not saying anything at all because it's fine for them too.

You might like to try downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ which will tell you if Mumsnet (or any other site you care to test) is really down or if it's just you.

You can generally tell that it's not the server being slow to respond if you start getting something and then it slows down - the server has done the heavy work of generating the page, it's just the download that's slow.

As to the suggestion that Mumsnet is overloaded, the server is actually fairly lightly loaded most of the time. We monitor the load on it continuously so we know how busy it is. Once in a while when some big indexing process or a big mail shot is taking place it can get a bit bogged down, but generally it copes just fine. And the network infrastructure (bandwidth, routers, switches, firewalls, etc.) is fine too and serves sites that are much busier than MN.

Since the original Tech escaped NikitaTech has been having to get to grips with over 1,000 files of Java, a few hundred templates, dozens of third party libraries, a CMS system, PHP for blogging, and a hundred or so shell scripts that tie it all together. This means that some changes that should be relatively easy might take a bit longer. She's doing a stirling job though, fixing all kinds of stuff.

There are a few things we can do to speed up some pages, but they're pretty minor and won't make much difference. The talk pages are already not rendered as one big table but as a series of DIVs, so the browser can display them as they come. Allowing browsers to cache the DWR javascript is more complicated than it might appear (the library that provides it generates it dynamically and sets the headers), but we'll get to it eventually. Things like compressing Javascript messes up some browsers, minifying breaks some Javascript that isn't perfect, and so on. In an ideal world we'd do all those things and more...

Whilst we're at it, the various mentions of crashes on this thread and elsewhere are actually mistaken - the weird messages that were reported are actually just us releasing a new version of the software; fixing stuff, improving stuff and so on. When the new files are deployed (now fully automated) it takes a minute for everything to straighten out, caches to reload etc. We try to do most of them late at night, but if it's urgent we sometimes do them mid-morning.

Oh and for the record, in the "pls ignore" thread Nikita wasn't learning how to post; she was testing a complaint that the indexing process (flippin' complicated thing that it is) was knackered. The original intention was to delete the thread after a few minutes, but it took on a comical life of its own so we left it there.

Hope this has cleared up some of the points raised. Feel free to post more on the topic - someone does read it all and we often work on stuff even if we're not posting about it, because I am sure for most people the technology behind Mumsnet is pretty blooming dull!

AbbyMumsnet · 28/03/2008 16:19

Thank you oh geeky one.

GeekBoy · 28/03/2008 14:57

Hey Abby - here's a profile of a typical page loading.. ..ads are taking hardly any time compared to other page elements.. ..shown here

AbbyMumsnet · 28/03/2008 14:29

I'm going to flag this up again to the tech team - but not sure that it's something they can sort, tbh.

peanutbutterkid · 28/03/2008 12:20

I have same experience as OP.

GeekBoy · 28/03/2008 11:54

more people using MN is the easy answer (although I can't qualify that unless MN gave out access to server logs.. ..although the http500-13 errors point to the server having too many connection requests) ;-) Where's that little rabbit....

nannynick · 28/03/2008 11:51

geekboy - you know far more techi stuff than I do I work with children these days, easier to understand them, than computers.

I suspect that mumsnet is becoming more popular, so the increase in the number of users is putting pressure on the computer systems.

Carmenere · 28/03/2008 11:40

Thanks for that simple explanation Geekboy
Why is it happening all the time now though, it didn't used to?

zippitippitoes · 28/03/2008 11:40

well something is up with it

it happens in cycles

so fine and then will have up to an hour when it stalls and thats when everyone starts multiple posting or goes and does something else

GeekBoy · 28/03/2008 11:37

it's still not the ads...

;-)

pinging servers won't help. None of my webservers will respond to a ping but they play nicely on port 80 and 443.

The ads, although adding bulk to the page, actually download more quickly than some of the MN elements. Add the fact that some MN stuff is squished into tables which won't render in the browser until they have all their bits and know who they'll display and there's a reason for longer page display times.

Loads of the main page bits are requested in parallel. The main menu bars at the top load sequentially (but mainly from cache) due to the way they're structured..

policywonk · 28/03/2008 11:13

Of course as soon as I had posted that, the entire site crashed.

policywonk · 28/03/2008 11:04

Yes, nn, that's exactly what happens to me too. Thought it was my rubbish wireless connection - am rather comforted to find out that it's not.

It doesn't seem to be happening right now though - so presumably the MN server/s aren't at peak capacity in the mornings?

Come on MN, we'll club together to buy you a bigger server...

nannynick · 28/03/2008 10:58

Yes, I find it can 'stick' when it's trying to load the 'sky' ad - that's not SKY as in BSKYB, but the thin long ad-format which sometimes appears on the right of a talk page.
I suspect the text content of the page has loaded fine, but the browser can't display that until the 'sky' ad has downloaded, as the browser can not determine correctly what size that advert is.
What I get to see is the mumsnet logo bar, navigation links, thread title, but then nothing below that... until that ad has loaded, or timed out and you just see a "

policywonk · 28/03/2008 10:49

I just want to echo what a couple of posters said further down - the page doesn't load, seems to 'stick', I refresh then it (usually) reloads straightaway. 'Tis annoying. Also, yes, 'peak' MNing times seem worse now I think about it (esp. evenings).

nannynick · 28/03/2008 10:42

opps, meant 460Kbps

nannynick · 28/03/2008 10:41

I'm getting about 460kbs, sometimes faster (according to speedtest.net) from a mobile phone connection. It's costly and coverage is patchy, but may be an option if you did ever want a faster connection.

Just did a ping test to various adnetwork domains... and ads.adviva.net did not respond at all. The current mumsnet page I am typing this on, when that loaded, it did get a response from that server...

document.write('');

So perhaps the server is not accepting a PING or it was working, and now isn't.

It could be this type of thing which is giving the slow down.

oggsfrog · 28/03/2008 10:12

Can't get broadband as we live so far from the exchange.

oggsfrog · 28/03/2008 10:10

Most of this thread is going over my head.
Due to my sllloooooooowwwwwwww dial-up connection we average a connection speed of 14.4 Kbps so everything is slow, but, MN is very, very, very, very slow. I can't give you a particular time when it is slow as it is slow all the time.
I tried blocking ads (I know the powers that be don't like us doing this but needs must) but it has never worked for me.

nannynick · 28/03/2008 09:59

I think server load, on the mumsnet servers is certainly likely to be part of the issue. Stripping scripts down to their bare minimum may help a bit and allowing scripts like engine.js to be cached, even if it has to be refetched once per day, would be better than fetching it every time (geekboy, do I have that right, do those cache settings mean that the browser is fetching that file for every page view?).

The ads appear to me to be served from multiple servers... I think it may work along the lines of... adnetwork provides a script which mumsnet puts on their site. The adnetwork script, then adds to the HTML code, additional scripts to enable ad-tracking, and telling the browser the ad content type (jpg, flash, gif etc) and then fetching that image data from the ad-hosting companies server. The adnetwork and ad-hosting companies may well also be splitting the load across many servers, so the code could be telling the browser which server to obtain the data from.

Anyone in the on-line ad industry who can explain how this works? Do I have this right, or is it even more complex?

GeekBoy · 27/03/2008 09:44

Took a look last night and it definitely doesn't look like it's ads that are slowing things down..

CantSleepWontSleep · 26/03/2008 09:56

The site is fast for me, but I have an adblocker installed (though I understand that MN would prefer if we didn't all do this).
