I really wish the sex board wasn’t on active. It changes the whole tone of the Mumsnet board when you click on Active. And not in a good way.
If you agree please reply to this post.

I agree

Agree!

mommybear1 · 26/02/2023 08:52

Glad to hear this.

WomensLandArmy · 26/02/2023 08:50

Brilliant, thank you.

SweetSakura · 25/02/2023 12:24

Good.

But I don't believe for a second that the timing of moving it into active was a pure coincidence.

No, me neither. And I notice the Ann Summers collab didn't get a mention.

arghtriffid · 25/02/2023 16:38

Thank you

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 25/02/2023 13:07

Glad to see a response to such an unpopular move... even such a late one.

SweetSakura · 25/02/2023 12:24

Good.

Justine's post: Hi again... Wow so this took off overnight! It's pretty clear from the strength of feeling and reaction to my post that this isn't so much about the actual affects of moving the Sex topic into Active, or the fact that individually you can avoid seeing it by hiding it, it's as much about tone and feel of the site. As such it seems to me there's no point us waiting for the data and so we'll remove Sex from active shortly.

One of the issues that we've got is that Active is very much the home page of Mumsnet for many - and as ComeTheFckOnBridget says lots of other sites do this differently.

When we launched follow topics last month, many users asked for a way to see a feed of the latest threads from the topics they're following - we're working on that feature at the moment and it will be ready to launch soon and I think over time it could be that Active then evolves to become more of an index and less of a landing page. But we'll see how the introduction of feed goes and what the take up is like before thinking about any further changes.

One thing that's been useful about this discussion is that it's made it clear we should formalise our guidelines on how we moderate the Sex board. As we've said, we have not, over the years, had any particular issues with this board (wrt to pervs, sex pests etc) but I agree we could communicate some clearer boundaries with regard to safeguarding and expected behaviour, so thanks to all who've mentioned that - we'll get on to asap.

Something I want to put on record is that this decision to move Sex threads into Active conversations had absolutely zilch to do with the Smilemakers partnership. There was no pressure put on us to make this move and at no point in any thinking about this did Smilemakers come up. Over the years we've literally turned down millions of pounds from brands because we've categorically refused to engage in disingenuous marketing and/or take money from those brands which don't make parents' lives easier - I think we've shown that we're pretty good at resisting commercial pressure.

Thanks as ever for the feedback and good weekends to all Flowers

Justine has posted on another thread, to say that it's going to be taken out of active.

WomensLandArmy · 25/02/2023 12:19

Agree. Take some responsibility MumsNet. Telling us to hide it does not make it go away, or the associated problems. V disappointed in your responses so far.

arghtriffid · 25/02/2023 06:44

Anyone else struggling to find tab bar for Active/I'm on now?

arghtriffid · 25/02/2023 06:42

I will move to another forum too. Mumsnet your days may be numbered anyway.

Borka · 24/02/2023 16:12

I think it's really inconsiderate that there wasn't any advance warning it was going to start appearing in Active, which would at least have given people the chance to hide the topic BEFORE they started seeing triggering / upsetting threads titles.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 24/02/2023 16:04

Agree

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 24/02/2023 15:58

Please remove from Active.

mathanxiety · 24/02/2023 15:51

Agree!

Rainbowshit · 24/02/2023 15:37

I agree. Take it off active please.

AbsolutePixels · 24/02/2023 15:37

I agree. Some of the thread titles are very explicit, and it's not right to expose members to this type of content against their will. Some women will find it triggering, others simply icky. Either way, it's not acceptable.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 24/02/2023 12:11

I agree.

It should be opt-in, not opt-out.

There are also safeguarding and legal concerns as a few of us have noted in other threads which need to be addressed as much for MNHQ's sake as for us posters.

Doyoumind · 24/02/2023 11:55

The number of Sex threads in Active is annoying but I hadn't realised they'd put the requirement down to 7 days. No MN.

The whole site is just less appealing for me nowadays. Things are going downhill.

AnonymousHippopotamus · 24/02/2023 10:02

I agree, as I've made clear on other threads.

I'll add that I don't think the sex chat is fit for purpose for the vast majority of users. As I've said elsewhere, it's the last topic I'd post in if I wanted advice about sex because I'm well aware of the audience and contributors there.

Very few of us want MN to be a hook-up joint.

The collaborations with the shrek's ear vibrator company and Ann Summers were badly considered. With the sex topic suddenly appearing in active at the same time, it looks like a deliberate manipulation to change the tone of MN. 'Sex positivity' can fuck off, frankly.

Allowing posters to post in the sex topic after seven days is encouraging a different demographic onto MN. No thanks.

The internet is awash with sex. Women are hassled by males with unwanted approaches everywhere. Why does MN need to be a place that facilitates this? Anyone who's horny can find somewhere else, it's not difficult.

Users here who want genuine sex advice will continue to ask for it under the radar and not in the sex topic. We're not stupid.

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn

This site is meant to be a safe space for women

Unfortunately it's never a safe space - it's a public forum after all. We all need to bear that in mind, whatever we're posting.

However, I get the sentiment of your post - it's a place which has always been predominantly a space for women to talk. About women-centred issues.

MorticiaAddamsIsMyStyleGuru · 24/02/2023 09:40

Agree

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/02/2023 09:27

I hate that MNHQ have sold out to the highest bidder. This site is meant to be a safe space for women and it's being turned into something really sleazy.

(Sadly) there are plenty of other places online where people can be as sleazy as they like so why the need for sleazy content on MN?

Why MNHQ can't see that running a site where many vulnerable women come for support isn't the place to welcome predatory men is beyond me.
