Why are you allowing people to troll the Sex Board?

HornyBee · 18/02/2023 12:36

If it was any other board you wouldn't allow it.
If I went on another board and started posting recipes and taking the piss out of the posters I'd quickly be banned.
It is flooded with people trolling it.
Every single thread.
It's really horrible.
Take it off active or just shut the whole board down.
It's disgusting.

For those using the app you can't presently hide topics from there but if you open the browser on the device your using and log in to MN.

Click on the blue head > settings > more settings > talk settings.

Scroll to the bottom of the page to hide topics.

Chosen topics will now be hidden when you return to the app.

I know you shouldn't have to and MNHQ have messed up badly but that's how to do it.

You can, sort of, it's just not very intuitive on iPhone app. It's not in settings! It's in "mymumsnet" then scroll to bottom and click for additional settings then you may be prompted for password as it moves to the browser site and then scroll right to bottom for hidden topics and you can add it.

OutofEverything · 18/02/2023 16:24

I hid the topic long ago.

Mermaidparades · 18/02/2023 16:23

@Surplus2requirements thank you for sharing this

Sex threads are wall to wall troll usually. Im actually enjoying the piss takes.

my fave was "ah so much like the home life of our dear departed queen" had me chucking for ages.

I'm giving up on MN for a month or so see if it improves. it's a weird vibe. All the normal stuff mixed in with SEXSEXSEX I don't understand are they really hard up?

What next links to porn sites?

Yeah I am wondering too if MN are really hard up. This really tarnished the brand.
I laugh at the few posters still seeing sites like MN as somehow better than Tattle. They are totally wrong.

Mermaidparades · 18/02/2023 16:18

@smooththecat oh please, don’t be so dramatic!! That is not sex talking 🤣

smooththecat · 18/02/2023 16:16

The sex topic used to about sex, now it is sex.

SybilWrites · 18/02/2023 16:13

If you log on very early, Active Conversations is full of sex threads (God know what they're doing all night). Including this morning one called ANAL in capital letters. Those threads are full of wanking pervs. People are messaging each other off board. reducing the minimum length of membership to 7 days was also a huge mistake - and why, because for some reason MN decided to partner with a company that produces vibrators for vulva havers? MN has become a whole middle aged man's dream site which is just contrary to what MN actually is - a site for mums.

MNHQ should remove the threads from Active convos. That's all. They misjudged the strength of feeling amongst MN users.

Mermaidparades · 18/02/2023 16:05

@C8H10N4O2 I actually deleted Mumsnet recently because of all this nonsense. Life is too short for bad feelings, you know. But then I missed the other posters so decided to come back. And it’s still rumbling on.
On other boards posters are dealing with dying parents and unwell children and here we are, moaning about whether it’s appropriate to see the word ‘fleshlight ’ and ‘rimjob’ on a sex board. It’s pretty silly really.

Lonelycrab · 18/02/2023 15:50

I think mnhq have really messed up here. I get that they may well have done this to increase clicks or traffic, but if it pisses off 95% of your users, they’ve massively misjudged it. I got the help with anal and fleshlight thread right in my face first thing this morning too.

They do have form for blatantly ignoring feedback, even when it’s overwhelmingly users saying they don’t like new features or changes. These little icons beneath each post that clog up the screen, everyone hates them, we gave feedback which was completely ignored. Hey ho.

Simple solution, just stop it appearing in active. I wish they’d listen.

FWIW I occasionally dip into reading the sex board (don’t post) and I’ve never seen anything I’d describe as pervy wank fodder, at least in terms of what guys are posting, and I don’t see the problem if people stay respectful and polite.

AnotherAppleThief · 18/02/2023 15:45

GoodChat · 18/02/2023 15:35

It's disgusting that I now have to see titles about rimming and flesh lights and anal whilst browsing MN at the breakfast table with my 12 year old nearby.

I mean, you could always put your phone down and talk to your child instead.
I know it's a novel idea, but it might catch on one day.

OMG you're right! I've been a parent for 20 years and this has literally never occurred to me. Wow, thanks for the advice xxx

Mermaidparades · 18/02/2023 14:45

@hryllilegur yes, hysterical. Insinuating that the posters are paedophiles without any evidence at all is completely unhinged.
You like sex too? Awesome! You can choose or not to use the board!
I agree that the board should be opt in. But it is a sex board, therefore a completely appropriate place to discuss anal beads.

I note you bravely posted under a new name here. Or are you new?

BalloonInvestigator · 18/02/2023 15:29

Hopped over to have a browse. Not offended by anal beads, but surprised by the amount of married people looking for sex chat.

oviraptor21 · 18/02/2023 15:27

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2023 14:18

Anyway it's not 'trolling', as per the MNHQ definition; it's a harmless peaceful recipe protest.

According to Wikipedia and various other sources it is trolling.

ArcticSkewer · 18/02/2023 15:20

HornyBee · 18/02/2023 15:10

And yet I've reported the trolling recipe comments and mumsnet have now removed them.

Thanks for reporting them.

They don't show as 'message deleted for trolling ' which they should do! Just zapped like they never existed.

HornyBee · 18/02/2023 15:13

hryllilegur · 18/02/2023 14:32

Or hide the threads. You know. since it’s so easy.

It's not the thread that needs hiding.
The threads are people posting questions about sex on a sex board.
It's the immature comments and abuse on the threads that is the issue.

I think it's shocking that MNHQ has not listened to users and taken the Sex board threads out of Active. It's what both sides of the argument want.

As an intelligent, single woman, I am interested in anything from parenting to politics to relationships. I have no issue discussing sex and have found the vast majority of posters on the Sex boards to be polite and respectful. Anybody looking for wank fodder usually gets very short shrift.

That said, I respect that many other women don't want sex titles popping up on their active feed. And it's certainly not easy to hide the board on the app. I do hope MNHQ sort it out soon... like this weekend!

What I would ask is that people don't make assumptions. I get that you might be offended by talk of anal beads, you might think that kind of thing is disgusting and grim. But the rhetoric that only dirty, wanking men frequent the sex boards is simply not true. There are many ordinary women like myself on there. Your vitriol towards the whole group affects us too. Please rein back the nastiness.

Mermaidparades · 18/02/2023 14:45

Maybe the juxtaposition in active convos next to questions about infant care or schooling is part of the appeal for some people.

Do you realise how hysterical you sound? Take a deep breath. No, the posters on the Sex Board have been posting questions about sex to like minded, inquisitive folk for our own development. Men and women, sharing ideas. I’m a Mum, but I’m not a 2D character. I am also a grown up with an active love life. I don’t want to have missionary position PIV every night so I look there for help. The male posters are all respectful, helpful, humorous without exception. Maybe hold a mirror up to the disgusting comments on this thread and have a good long think if they are likewise.

Ah. Both hysterical and ‘mums like sex too’.

I’m a mum and I like sex too. But, like many others, I don’t want to see sex topic threads in active convos. There are lots of MN users who feel the same.

Given that other topics are opt in for various reasons, it seems reasonable that the sex topic might also be opt in.

It’s not like anyone is restricted from using other websites either. There’s no reason why Mumsnet should be necessarily be the place people go to to ask about anal beads.

I wouldn’t sign up for pistonheads to ask about how to deal with toddler tantrums or to whinge about MIL. Even if I really, really liked talking about cars otherwise.

Previously the sex topic was something that longer term users could opt into. But without making it part of the default user experience. So there was more of an argument that it was serving wants of some users. Putting it front and centre, unless you opt out, and making the waiting period pretty trivial is a big change.

avaandeva · 18/02/2023 14:30

That explains all the sex threads in my active feed. I thought we'd been overrun. I thought I'd hidden it but will try to do that now.

A disproportionate number of men on those threads compared to the rest of Mumsnet 🤔

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 18/02/2023 14:27

Surprised to see there is now a thread for people looking to meet others for 'sex chat'. Of course, people can hide the thread or even the whole topic, but I hope it doesn't spill over into other topics.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 18/02/2023 14:06

Here's a crazy, batshit idea, just a random shot in the dark, but here's an idea...... For you - AND the others who cannot hide the sex topic on their phone.......

LOG ON TO MUMSNET ON AN ACTUAL COMPUTER/PC/LAPTOP, AND HIDE THE SEX TOPIC.

You're welcome......... Smile

HQ should be sorting this out, it is a poor customer experience if the poster has to log into a different device to amend their board preferences. And if a compter/PC/laptop is not easily available, what then?
