Hi,

The Nicola Bulley thread must have been hidden overnight by nightwatch. I wasn't on it at the time to see what happened.
Are we allowed the post back or are we not allowed to discuss it now?

These threads are just shite for gossips, people getting their rocks off at others misery, whatever excuses you can muster are pathetic, shame on you all.

Yep!

Hi @ofwarren the thread you refer to was auto-hidden due to the number of reports about it. When we reviewed it this morning, we decided to take it down. This is because a lot of posts were making direct accusations about members of Nicola's family. We have not stopped MNers discussing the investigation nor speculating (as that's all that can be done right now) but we must ask posters not to make such claims. On another thread, we asked posters not to do this but it continued, and so we removed it too.

What does this mean for threads going forwards?
Are we allowed to have them?
It's a problem if all posters have to do to get rid of a thread they don't like, is to derail it.

@GoAgainstNicki

Do people really still use language such as " nut job" ?

Why you asking me? The OP used it in one of her posts and I just repeated it. I’m guessing people clearly do use the phrase as the OP and I have both typed itConfused

JaneJeffer · 11/02/2023 15:23

You're totally exaggerating @Quveas and the threads are there for anyone to see that for themselves.

GoAgainstNicki · 11/02/2023 15:21

I much prefer talking about it on here, rather than on twitter/Facebook/Reddit with all the nut jobs.

Lol there’s loads of nut jobs on here. The usual have already made it to this thread

JaneJeffer · 11/02/2023 15:21

Yeah it was totally weird. How is he supposed to answer that?

Amazed at the people who followed 7 threads whilst being horrified at them all.

Thank you for ably demonstrating my point. It is entirely possible to dip in and out of threads and see the nastiness and vitriol. It doesn't require people to to be "amazed" that someone actually looks at threads. We have as much right to comment as everyone else, but the tone of those threads was often "if you don't like what is being posted then f* off and don't read them". Which is the implication behind this comment, isn't it? At one point there was a poster - who is also commenting on this thread - telling people that they are "thick" repeatedly because they disagreed with that persons pet theory on the disappearance. Speculation, baseless rumour, and outright lies and fiction characterised many posts; with a hefty dose of personal attacks thrown in. Much of what was being posted was the internet version of the ghoulish behaviours of those turning up at the site to insert themselves into a tragedy, and it really wasn't pleasant. Wrapping it up as "concern" for her or for the family doesn't make the tragedy public property.

Shewasnthere · 11/02/2023 15:19

@Bluebellwood129 I agree with you.

I think it's safe to say that other than the poster that suggested aliens and seemingly to police, most people including the family now suspect a third party. So I hope in the coming weeks for whole family that leads are found and answers are given. Must be hell not known.

Going Back to the program, did you find it odd when Dan asked Paul 'will you be ok'? I found that to be a very strange thing to ask him. I asked this question last night but then the thread went. Or is it just me that found it weird.

GoAgainstNicki · 11/02/2023 15:18

It is unfair to people who are following the case and are genuinely concerned.

Why do you need 100 threads on a missing person just because you’re concerned. Maybe follow the news and keep up to date with everything? Why does there even need to be constant discussions?

I hope MN don’t bring the thread back. It’s very distasteful

30-45 mins seems very quick to be checking someone’s whereabouts and preparing to go out looking for them doesn’t it?

Not really. She would have probably been expected to be home to work so wouldn’t have just chatted to a friend for ages.

If my partner was 45 minutes later back from dropping our daughter off at school, that he does every day, didn’t call and didn’t answer his phone, I’d know something had happened. I wouldn’t be panicking, but I’d be wondering what was wrong. He has to start work so wouldn’t be late unless something had happened. It’s not like being 45 minutes later home than you said from a night out when you’re not going to be late got anything. It was daytime and the routine was kids, dog walk, work at home.

But she’d started her working day on the move, she didn’t have to clock in, she clearly had flexibility. She could have got chatting with someone she hadn’t seen for a while, or taken another call and got embroiled in a work related matter, been chatting to a friend about something personal. Unless someone has to be somewhere on the dot for a specific reason, like picking up children or similar, to be calling and chasing them up within 30-45 mins seems extreme unless it’s a vulnerable person. Certainly getting your shoes on to go out searching for a fit healthy adult who could have had any number of legitimate reasons to be half an hour longer that he expected sounds stifling to me. But we are all different.

@Bluebellwood129 I also can not say on here my thoughts on it. But it was an uncomfortable watch for many reasons.
Although absolutely every other thing/event is speculated about any other time. So I'm not sure why we're not allowed to speculate this specific case. You will always have people on either side of the fence and some in the middle. That's just human nature and difference of opinion and the way in which we individually receive information.

I agree. I think discussion of the facts is very important and that will naturally lead to speculation. Some of the posts last night on thread 7 were highly inappropriate though. With hindsight, it might have been wise to have taken that down temporarily in the same way that other forums paused commenting. There was obviously going to be a frenzy.

Bluebellwood129 · 11/02/2023 14:39

@Shewasnthere For me, it raised yet more questions which I obviously can't mention here because it would be straying into speculation. It seems to me that Nicola's partner is desperate to keep the case in the media and for the focus to move away from the water, but that he's considering all possible outcomes at this stage. Whether the timing of the programme was right is another discussion and that's not for me to comment on.
How about you?

Shewasnthere · 11/02/2023 14:24

@Bluebellwood129 yes maybe, but that's why I've thought it's strange there hasn't been a televised standard appeal for her as a missing person because like you say there's no evidence either way or anything at all.

Out of interest what did you think about the program?

Daisymaker · 11/02/2023 14:23

@SueG60

The thing is no one really knows and I think it winds some posters up when people say something as fact, particularly about a topic as sensitive as suicide

Daisymaker · 11/02/2023 14:21

The threads have been very interesting but the attacks on individuals , whether it's other posters, family members or indeed NB are just too far . Here's hoping common sense prevails and the thread can be continued

SueG60 · 11/02/2023 14:21

Ppbbww9 · 11/02/2023 14:17

Some of the posts on the last thread were offensive to people who have lost loved ones through suicide. That may be part of the reason it was hidden.

Those posts were mine and thats why I'm apologising, I tried to draw a line under it and move on but it kept coming back. They were on thread 6 though not the one last night, there wasn't any discussion of that last night.

I didn't mean to offend anyone, I was merely trying to explain why it wasn't a suicide and was being pushed to give details to rule it out. This is the problem with internet forums, things get twisted and can escalate quite quickly.

lemmein · 11/02/2023 14:19

On the subject of online speculation and 'armchair detectives'....without the aid of 'web sleuths' Marion Barter's family (of The Lady Vanishes podcast) would still be hitting a brick wall with the police insisting she was a missing person who left of her own accord.

The podcast gained worldwide attention which forced a formal review of the case which, in turn, resulted in further investigation. It also gained enough traction that the case was referred to the coroners court and an inquest was opened - the family are closer than ever to finding out what happened to Marion.

All of this was possible because of one 'web-sleuth' who found a lonely hearts ad, which they followed up and found a man, completely unknown to Marion's family who astonishingly admitted to having an 'affair' with her. Further investigation into this man had revealed he has a history of conning women. Nobody had heard of this man, none of Marion's friends or family - he was only found because of online-speculation.

The case is still unsolved as far as I know, but without the 'online speculation' Marion's daughter would be left with only the police narrative that her mum had willingly left.

I think the 'oh PA twitched and rubbed his nose therefore he's guilty' posts should be removed - but general discussion of this bizarre case is not harmful to the investigation and it's a shame people have been silenced on this.

A link to Marion's disappearance if you've never heard of her - fascinating case:

Does anyone have an idea why there hasn't been the standard appeal with the police sat beside the family. The interviews have all been by the media. Lastnight interview was so different to any other case we've seen.

Presumably because the police continue to pursue their main hypothesis of Nicola entering the water accidentally with seemingly no evidence found so far to support either this or any other alternative.

@ofwarren I think it was something to do with sue and another poster, it was hidden shortly after that exchange. I do hope I didn't contribute to it being pulled with my post. I've followed these threads from beginning, other than the nastiness from random posters, it has been very well managed by you and others.
