What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

Mumsnet, could something be added to the algorithm so it doesn't offer up threads with very few replies. I tried clicking on two suggested threads - the first had only three posts, the second had only the initial post and no replies!

Maybe there could be a minimum length.

Has traffic to the site dropped so much that old threads need to be bumped?

It needs removing, people are just bumping up old out of date threads. If I want something specific I use the search function.

And this is how echo chambers are born. Haven't you learnt anything from Facebook and Twitter using these kind of algorithms? Facebook is dying because of their "suggestions ". Its really not good business sense to implement it.

Agree. Trying to sell me random shit based on the cookies that attach to my account is one thing, but the above examples of the crashing insensitivity are a whole different thing. Come on, MN is better than that, even with the need to generate income Sad

We have just had a week of Zombie threads deliberately posted by Trolls.

The dead mothers were in an Employment Issues thread, not bereavement. I just looked at the thread, and it is still picking up totally inappropriate threads regarding elderly parents and end of life from other boards.

Just take this feature off completely for now. Please.

Lily, everything I'm being recommended is REALLY old and out of date. I don't want to see all that stuff again, a year after I saw it last.. 😞

Omg! So happy I found this thread. I got a new iPhone yesterday and have been seeing this ever since. I honestly thought it was something wrong with my phone.

All the threads I’ve clicked on have all been months old too? What’s the point in encouraging us to read and comment on zombie/old threads. Makes zero sense

There’s another thread on this issue suggesting that’s why all the zombie threads are being resurrected recently and the recommended threads underneath direct us to more threads about zombie threads. The whole site is going to eat itself.Grin

I don’t like it either. Reading the “live” thread about the black pudding in the cafe and all I’ve got underneath is suggestions about various other threads about cafes, the top one dating back to March this year.Confused

It's all a bit patronising. If someone is looking for an answer then there is a search bar at the top of the page. I'm sure we are all capable of using that rather than be told what we "might" be looking for. As my old dad used to say "if it aint broke, don't fix it". Give us something we actually ask for, like an edit button.

And don’t most of us just head to Google with our search and add “Mumsnet” to the search term to get all the threads on, say, kitchen renovations or noisy neighbours or whatever?

This feature is primarily meant for those searching for information - if the first thread they land on doesn't entirely answer their question, they get suggestions for others that might. It's very much a work in progress - over time we'll be able to tweak it to make it more accurate - so telling us where you think it's not quite right is much appreciated. We have underweighted older threads in the algorithm but if it causes any problems with zombie threads, again, this is something that can be easily adjusted.
