What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

I wonder if we should start reporting any zombie threads -and especially, any appearing in trending or This Dreadful Feature - to MN, so they get as annoyed by them as we do? (Or would that get us banned??)

@LilyMumsnet oh but while you are tweaking maybe you could lock some of the old threads which are now occupying several of the trending spaces this morning? There is a thread about a lunch which happened in September and which people are still posting on, despite it having been pointed out several times this morning that it is a zombie. I have to admit, it doesn't paint posters in a particularly good light either - they have obviously only bothered to read the initial post and weighed in with their response.

We're still in the process of tweaking this feature but we are listening to all of your feedback.
@LilyMumsnet if you were listening you would remove the feature completely until you have fixed it - if a fix is actually possible to make this work for the benefit of the site! "Tweaking" is something you do to a flower arrangement that looks a bit lopsided! This drip of removing individual topics from the new feature only when users highlight the inappropriateness of some of the threads suggested is just embarrassing!

Why are you still running with it @LilyMumsnet ? Can you explain to us why you are positive it should stay?

There are emotional and difficult past threads on pretty much every branch of this forum. You are not going to be able to prevent distress by just removing a few branches @LilyMumsnet .

I'd be interested to hear what you and others at MNHQ consider valuable about this new feature. Because I can't think of a single positive to it, and lots of negatives. Certainly nothing good that outweighs the possible harm to posters trying to move on from a difficult time in their lives.

Have to agree. And changing "You might also like" to "Similar threads" serves only to irritate.

Seriously, forget the tweaking. Just admit that is a feature that has no positive function on this particular website, and drop it

I appreciate it's not just you Lily, but you're not listening. So many people have said get rid of it, but instead MNHQ seem determined to press on regardless.

It's not beneficial or helpful to a site like MN, and no matter how many boards you exclude from the suggested threads it's not going to stop posters being recommended zombie threads or threads that are inapproriate or irrelevant.

To which the correct solution is "fix the bloody search function", not add more poorly researched, poorly designed and poorly tested malfunctional features.

It's in a stupid position, also, blocking the posting box for replying to the thread one is actually on.

Hard to ‘punish’ the rest of us by having it though when we’re being told it’s there as a useful tool!

I think MNHQ aren't commenting because this thread is doing all their UX research for them.

I also agree with @TimBoothseyes - I suspect this will be something that's only removed for Premium users.

Agree to what most are saying about this awful, clunky feature. Do please get rid.

if you want to improve the forum, give us an EDIT BUTTON please.

You can do the same thing with search / advanced search, or googling a topic and adding Mumsnet to the end of the search.

The new feature shows you 3 /4 threads which have a similar word in the title / opening post. If you think search throws curve balls have you seen the examples on this thread.

Posts about being black showing suggested threads about wearing black jeans

Post about bake off suggesting cremation

Posts about Christmas bargains showing threads years out of date that are no longer relevant

Adding my voice to those calling for this new "feature" to be scrapped. If not, you're going to have to put a Zombie warning on every thread that has not had a post in the last 7 days or there will be a mutiny on your hands!

Because you read someone else's thread, come up with questions / curiosity on a point related to it and can see at the bottom the threads associated with it.

You can go look through them. Particularly with topics where the search function can throw up some absolute curve balls...

Reading old threads = Not a problem.
Replying to old threads = issues.

Exactly. I'm sure many others have Googled something with the word MN at the end of the search to bring up relevant threads when they had a question, I know I have multiple times. Also we now have a functioning advanced search which would also help answer questions without the need to post on old threads.

All this new feature is doing is clogging up 90% of the topics with old irrelevant threads which offer no discussion.

reading other opinions on related topics can answer that without the need for a new thread.

Errm how does that work? You don't see the suggestions until you've made the thread.

But Threads you might like doesn't help with that at all! You don't see that feature until you have started the new thread! If you want opinions/information on a similar topic you need to use the search function before starting the thread? Once your new thread is up, then you run with it!

Reading old threads = Not a problem.
