'like', 'dislike' or 'laugh' at posts

Another forum that i use allows you to 'like', 'dislike' or 'laugh' at posts as well as being able to reply.

I really like this format as it allows you to interact with post/comments without having to post a full reply (esp. good if someone else has already said what you wanted to post).

This doesn't seem to cut down on the number of replies on the other forum just allows another way to interact.

Would you enjoy this feature, is this something MN have ever thought of implementing ?

That's true @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g!

PurpleButterflyWings · 01/11/2022 00:24

Not a chance would I want a like and dislike button - or thumbs up and thumbs down. It encourages cliques and bullying. A loud, opinionated, and well known/regular poster who has a bit of a following will end up with more 'likes' than the lesser known person they are arguing with.

Then it will put the more well known poster under the bizarre and utterly incorrect illusion that they are correct. It also looks like they are more popular and as I said, it creates cliques, factions, and bullying.

It's no different to quoting someone and saying "Agreed" though and people have always done that.

It’s minimal effort I agree but a little bit more than one keystroke or thumb print

DramaAlpaca · 31/10/2022 20:54

No, dear god no. MN is a discussion forum and fine as it is.

DahliaBlooming · 31/10/2022 18:29

Nooooo! Please no reaction buttons!

No thank you. Here, we use our words. Old fashioned maybe; quirky, some might say; others might find us dinosaurs. But still we say no, no thank you.

Not sure you can say "we" as you don't speak for me

SirChenjins · 31/10/2022 18:23

👎

BagOfBollocks · 31/10/2022 18:20

Again, it's no different to typing 'Agreed'.

SirChenjins · 31/10/2022 18:19

BagOfBollocks · 31/10/2022 18:10

It doesn't matter who's agreeing with dickish comments because if they didn't want anyone to know, they'd just name change to click like.

Great, if they want to go to the bother of name changing then let them - doubt they will though. Far easier just to give something a DM up/down whatever though, no need to do anything beyond one click.

StrictlyJowita · 31/10/2022 18:12

Why would you want a forum to be like a different forum? Surely is better if they aren’t all the same.

mauvemoth · 31/10/2022 17:50

An emoji is not the same as a like button that is.

mauvemoth · 31/10/2022 17:44

There is a very obvious difference typing something, I agree, an emoji is not the same at all.

BagOfBollocks · 31/10/2022 16:50

It's no different to quoting someone and saying "Agreed" though and people have always done that.

The very obvious differences is that agreed/this/YY etc is that the poster has to go to the bother of quoting and typing something, but more importantly, they can’t hide behind an anonymous 👍👎 I know it’s an anonymous site and people can change their surnames, but a thumbs up/down means it’s much harder to see who’s agreeing with dickish comments, for example.

SequoiaTree · 31/10/2022 17:10

Half the time people use the giggly twat emoji 😂not at anything funny but to sneer at an opinion they disagree with but aren't articulate enough to argue against.

Don’t be daft OP. Some of the posters on here, would be traumatised if their post got a thumbs down
They’d do be on here crying and claiming their mental health had been severely affected 😀

Yes, I agree with this.

Some people who post here seem to spend a lot of time monitoring when friends/family/partners are seemingly on-line (and therefore inferring that they are being ignored).

Counting likes/dislikes/whatever will just give them something else to obsess about.

I don't use the voting option and can't see any poll results by choice, but I do see a lot of posts with people saying "ooops, I pressed the wrong button" and this will just lead to more posts saying exactly that.

Presumably having that option would mean that the poster could see who had liked/disliked, giving even more cause for angst/advance searching to be able to say "well last year you "liked" a post saying exactly the opposite", and if not, then there would be nothing to stop people liking/disliking numerous times thus rendering the whole exercise completely pointless and I am sure there would still be people posting to say nothing other than "usernameX I have liked your comment.

A 'laugh' response would be absolute Mumsnet savagery

We've already got it though, haven't we? What's this? >>>>> Grin I certainly use it where I would be sniggering or grinning in real life.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 31/10/2022 17:02

I wouldn't want this. I really value the fact that you normally have to make a bit more of an effort on here.

I mean, yes there are still people who just post "Agreed" instead of a full reply (I've done it myself now and again) but the vast majority of responses are more substantial.

The like/dislike model encourages a sort of crappy Facebook/IG vibe where people get into even stupider passive-aggressive spats than they already do on here.

I'm really against the 'like' function. Yes, at times it feels like it would be handy. But it's good to be made type out a reply & engage

Likes / dislikes / laughs are not engagement.

YetAnotherBOOkyMumsnet · 31/10/2022 16:49

Hi @hairyunicorn thanks for your question. As previous posters have said, this is something that's been raised a few times on the boards to mixed opinion - usually leaning on the no side. We do like people to have discussions and a like/dislike button may not exactly encourage this. We never rule anything out of course - but we're led by what MNers want in these circumstances.

Its their style. I've not been here long but even I recognise it. Sure I did a doubletake a few times but I haven't seen anybody upset about it before. There are a few posters here with very distinct styles. Some have anger all the time, some have spittle flying cross your screen, some are so gentle you feel warm and fuzzy, some are attempting humour (ie its not your humour but it is to others). The rest of us blend into a grey nothingness.

If you don't like it then report. Let MN decide on whether they think it breaks their guidelines.

Those aren't the only options though are they?

Commenting on twattish behaviour is just as valid, as long as it's within talk guidelines.

I wonder if you'd be brave enough to be so snide and condescending to someone face to face? I guess not.

why don't you start this thread in AIBU so you can get a vote going? It'd be interesting to see the split.

Just to note - you can't vote on the app (only the browser). One reason why comments are actually more reflective of the real position.
