Threads I'm Watching

Haven't been on MN for a few days, because it's driving me mad with all the glitches. I've logged on this morning, and TIW is showing what looks like every thread I've ever watched for 17 years 🙄

Is this happening for anyone else?

Sounds like I'm not the only one frustrated by watched threads not honouring bookmarks. Perhaps we're not as "confused" as you thought we might be...

@Winterfellismyhome Thanks for letting us know about this issue. Can we just check that you're on the most recent update of the app? 4.4.16. If not, updating to that version might solve this.

I find it frustrating that threads in TIW don't go to bookmarks but go to the latest posts posted. Some threads I follow the OPs posts, others I read all the posts in the thread. If the thread automatically goes to the last posts posted it means I have to scroll back to try and find the last post I read. In some cases, the last post I have read is the one I've bookmarked but the thread still opens on the last posts posted. To be honest, it's putting me off watching threads as other threads that I'm not watching open at the bookmark. It makes the bookmark function irrelevant / redundant / pointless in TIW.

It's been days now and I'm still finding it very frustrating too, it's really putting me off Mumsnet as I can't see it is something I'll get used to. Especially when after bookmarking a post, I'll scroll to the end of the thread in order to click 'Watch Thread', but the site then presumes I've read all those posts. Why change the function now after all these years?!

Hi

We have recently included deleted threads in TIW so that people can see deletion messages. This was a retrospective change so older deleted threads are included. This is what will be happening from now on but we understand it's a bit of a change! Please do unwatch any threads that you don't want to see.

Hi, apologies for the delay! Here are some responses to the issues raised on this thread:

Increased size of text - we did this because there were a number of complaints about accessibility on this section due to small fonts. This is probably what is causing you to scroll more but it's necessary. We will discuss whether we can make the title more obvious now though as it is the same size as the previews of newest posts.

Newest post previews - We are showing two newest post previews instead of three to reduce the amount of extra scrolling now that the text is larger. We show two lines rather than the full post (which is the same as the previous version) - if you're seeing full posts then that's an error and it would be great to know what device/browser you are using along with a screenshot so we can fix it.

In the previous version you had to click on an arrow to go to the post but we had some complaints about that because users found that it was difficult to click the small arrow - so we've made it easer by allowing you to click on the text and we removed the arrow because it took up unnecessary space.

Honouring bookmarks - Clicking through to the last read post is the expected behaviour on these lists as the purpose is to show you the updates since you last saw the thread. If bookmarks took priority then it might be confusing for many users who have added an older bookmark but are expecting to click through to read the latest updates.

A few users have reported that they do want to click through to bookmarks so we will discuss it - we are discussing a new feature that will let you save your bookmarks to a list so you can find them again - this might be a better solution if that's what you're trying to do!

Seeing every thread you've ever been on - we aren't showing any more threads than before except that we now show deleted threads which was requested by a number of users. You can remove threads from these lists by clicking on the 3 dot menu next to the thread title. If you are seeing threads that you don't expect to see then please send us more details including a screenshot so we can look in to it.

Sometimes I bookmark the OP's last post but scroll past it to see the next few responses. If I go into the thread from TIW, I'm brought to the post I last looked at and not the bookmarked post, which it used to do. It's much more user friendly to go to the bookmarked post. At the moment, I have to scroll up to find it.

TIW stopped loading properly for me, then I switched off my adblocker for that page and it works again - but still in the crap new format. For some reason it bugs me that the whole text of the preview of the post is a link to that post - although I guess it makes sense. Didn't we use to be able to click on an arrow or the username of the person posting it to go straight to that post?

Pretty sure also the old version showed three posts rather than two, which was better for me. Seeing a little of more posts is better than seeing less of fewer. You aren't going to catch up on a whole thread that way anyway, so might as well have it take up less room.

Yes I hate the new layout too. Uses so much more space, have to scroll for ages to see all my threads. And uglier

I'm not a lover of the new format either. It takes up loads of space, the previous version only showed a set number of characters rather than the whole post and that's enough really. Pretty sure also the old version showed three posts rather than two, which was better for me. Seeing a little of more posts is better than seeing less of fewer. Well currently I can't even get to TIW- the page won't load (assuming this is due to tinkering!) - I'm on a laptop now, on Firefox.

But TIO seems similar - the text of the posts is as big as the text of the thread title etc, it's harder to click on the individual post in the preview to go to it - I can't remember the 'old' layout but it was far easier to use. I can now only preview two posts instead of 3. Basically I can see fewer threads (condensed) in one screen as everything takes up more space, so have to scroll a lot more.
TIW should be a quick view of current threads so I can open them up to view properly. It would be really great if it could go back to how it was yesterday.

I must hold my hands up and say I didn't like the initial changes, losing 'bump and reset' etc but had really got used to the changes and thought they were for the better in the end! Please don't change them again!

I noticed threads with new posts 'threads I'm on' are being bumped to the top of the list. This is a big improvement for me as I lose and forget some old threads.

It always used to take you to your bookmarked post, that way you could read down from where you left off. It worked well for me because once threads are well established, I bookmark the last post of the OP, so that when I open the thread I can see right away whether any of the new posts are from them. I don't know what you mean by storing bookmarks in a list but hopefully that will help. Tbh, I'm much less likely to go back to old threads at all if I can't see quickly if any recent posts are from the OP or not

We are working on a new feature idea that will allow you to store your bookmarks in a list so you can find them again - this sounds more like what you'd like?

I'm on a Windows laptop, using Firefox. I now don't have the option to right click and open in new tab anymore, which is how I usually go through my Watching list. I'm still able to do it elsewhere on the site. I'm also finding that when I click on an updated post, it's taking me to the last updated comment rather than where I've bookmarked on the thread

@EmmaH2022 We lifted time restrictions on threads I'm watching in response to feedback from users who wanted to see old threads in that list - they've been there since April.

We understand that not everyone will want this and so you can now remove the threads from your list if you want to by clicking on the three dot menu next to the title of the thread.

The layout is also paginated, so you’ll only see the most recent watched threads unless you click through to the old pages.
