@LilyMumsnet

Hi all

We've discussed this and we're not going to take any action at the moment. This isn't to say that we're never going to make changes with regards to this discussion - but we're reviewing this as we go along. It's an enormous topic at the moment and it's everywhere (not just on Mumsnet). If you need to hide a thread, you can do this without even looking at the opening post. Just open it up and click the 'hide' button above the title.

We are more than happy to look at threads on a case-by-case basis so as ever, you can report to us if you have any concerns.

So were/are Covid and Brexit. Why do they get their own boards?
A580Hojas · 01/03/2022 20:00

Are the ridiculous threads zapped quickly though?

AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2022 19:44

It's a sensible decision, MNHQ. Thank you.

We can all help by reporting the more ridiculous threads so that they can be zapped quickly.

FolkloreEvermore · 01/03/2022 19:42

Very disappointing, not sure I’ll be able to stick around.
It’s really surprising that HQ don’t understand that a thread title in of itself can be hugely triggering. Feels like there’s very little genuine engagement in protecting mental health. As a new mum, I was really hoping mumsnet would do something to protect us from unnecessary harm and panic.

cakeorwine · 01/03/2022 19:38

Thanks @LilyMumsnet

This is such an important time in modern history.

Furries · 01/03/2022 19:34

Bizarre - perfectly happy to quickly whisk away threads regarding women’s rights, but “we’re all gonna be nuked” threads are absolutely fine.

Think I’ll stick to the Litter Tray for the time being - though that may change if cats develop opposable thumbs, at which point everyone will be panicking that felines will be taking over the world.

HeadacheGrey · 01/03/2022 19:31

If you need to hide a thread, you can do this without even looking at the opening post.

Yes but after reading the title 'I'm taking my kids out of school so we can all die together' the damage is already done Hmm

HeadacheGrey · 01/03/2022 19:28

I know where the Genealogy board is but that's rarely busy, and as for Gardening - it won't be long before people are posting about digging down to their old WW2 bomb shelters, or worrying about growing potentially radioactive vegetables.

😂🤣😂 So true.

A580Hojas · 01/03/2022 19:24

I'm a bit sad you made that decision HQ.

MyDcAreMarvel · 01/03/2022 19:19

We've discussed this and we're not going to take any action at the moment so you are happy with the responsibility of people who rely on this site really struggling with multiple scaremongering threads. Honestly MNHQ attitude to this is shameful.

We have a separate topic for Brexit. We have one for Covid. Why not one for this? There are now hundreds upon hundreds of threads about it, and nobody is trying to hide them away, just gather them all in one convenient location. Why not?

I already have AIBU hidden, and if I hide Chat as well then there will be very little of interest for me on here. My kids are all adults, I have no interest in the baby/child/education threads, I know where the Genealogy board is but that's rarely busy, and as for Gardening - it won't be long before people are posting about digging down to their old WW2 bomb shelters, or worrying about growing potentially radioactive vegetables.

There are a lot of people on MN who have emotional difficulties of one sort or another, or have a terrible family situation to deal with. They rely on MN for support, guidance and reassurance in their situation. To come on here and be faced with all the war-scaremongering threads isn't going to do their mental health any good at all.

AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2022 18:33

Yes, I would support stricter moderation of some of the scaremongering threads. Some of them are ridiculous, but putting them in a separate topic doesn't fix that.

28birthdays · 01/03/2022 18:23

@Ncwinc

There’s a difference between the discussion of what going on in Ukraine and the ‘We’re all going to die!!!!!!!’ threads.

I don’t think what’s happening should be hidden away. I do think that the threads that are basically a written panic attack should be deleted.

Absolutely this.
C8H10N4O2 · 01/03/2022 18:23

You talking

Agh - "you're talking" - sorry!

C8H10N4O2 · 01/03/2022 18:21

@merrymouse

I know that. How is this different from banning/censoring certain topics from the miscellaneous boards?

Because current threads still appear in active convos and older threads (i.e. more than a day old) can be easily browsed in the topic.

You talking about banning certain subjects from the miscellaneous topics. However you present it you are changing the way AIBU and Chat work and at the very least than needs clear guidelines for people to follow.

We also, on this thread, have people wanting these threads removed from active convos/trending. ie wanting it hidden completely so that unless you know there is discussion somewhere on the site you won't see it at all.

Its a site for adults, people need to take atleast some responsibility for what they choose to read. AIBU/Chat has many subjects which individuals find triggering so it makes far more sense to hide those topics if you find some subjects triggering.

Making it easier for individual members to hide threads makes perfect sense, restricting new posters from starting threads for a period of time may also help. Making it clear that some subjects are banned from miscellaneous topics is essential if that is what happens.

However wanting mechanisms to classify threads so that people don't see them at all is frankly ridiculous.

CecilyTheWake · 01/03/2022 17:56

FGS, no one is suggesting ‘hiding away’ anything, merely making proper use of the numerous existing topics so AIBU isn’t completely overrun with non-AIBU threads.

If people used the correct bloody topics more and MN had guidelines and a policy to move threads then the function of being able to hide topics would actually work effectively.

I hide the Covid topic because I was sick of seeing shouty panic-mongering threads dominating Active. I feel the same about all the ‘omg am I gonna diiiiiiieeeeee!’ threads now.

Ncwinc · 01/03/2022 17:18

merrymouse · 01/03/2022 17:13

while simultaneously insisting that it shouldn't make any difference where people post and a topic board should be perfectly adequate

Because you can always see current posts, and sometimes people want to be diverted by a pointless thread on loo brushes.

merrymouse · 01/03/2022 17:11

They can post in "In the News" section or whatever of they wish.

‘In the News’ doesn’t really cover things that touch people personally.

Irrespective of whether threads need to be moved (and I’ve clearly expressed my opinion on this), I think we are past the point when there should be a topic for Ukraine.

The choice shouldn’t be between opening yourself up to arsey replies on AIBU or hoping your thread doesn’t disappear on chat.

dollymuchymuchness · 01/03/2022 16:39

MNHQ

Another forum that I go on, has a thread called The one and only Ukraine War Thread. Everyone has to post on that thread and others started are removed.

AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2022 16:37

@merrymouse

I’m still not understanding why somebody who might want advice on donations for Ukraine should have to post in AIBU or chat or scroll back through pages of MIL posts.
I agree, they shouldn't have to. They can post in "In the News" section or whatever of they wish. It's a question of whether they should be allowed to post on the miscellaneous boards if they want to.

It seems that people who want to talk about other subjects are keen to argue the importance of retaining access to Chat and AIBU for themselves, while simultaneously insisting that it shouldn't make any difference where people post and a topic board should be perfectly adequate. If that's the case, why not just use the topic boards yourselves and hide the ones that are disturbing you?

28birthdays · 01/03/2022 16:35

MNHQ I'm sorry to sound like a drama llama but can something be done about triggering thread titles appearing on the Trending homepage? Perhaps HQ edits to make the trigger warning long enough so that people who don't want to see things about nukes etc, don't see it on the first bar of the Trending topics.

I'm 4 months PP and feeling quite vulnerable at the minute. I know there are alot of MN users in the same position who feel the same.

I've had anxiety to the point of panic attacks since the Ukraine/Russia situation started, seeing thread titles about nuclear war and Armageddon are really distressing me.

Obviously people don't want to see these things so they click on the threads to hide them, thus bumping them even more.

Please can something be done?

AlexaShutUp · 01/03/2022 16:32

@Fernandina

Why don't you just hide AIBU and chat I already have AIBU hidden. Doesn't stop them constantly appearing in 'trending' though. And if I hide Chat as well, it will be a waste of time coming on MN.

@LilyMumsnet Please please can we have a war topic now?

But why is it a waste of time coming on to MN if you have to hide chat? We have repeatedly been told on here that it doesn't matter where threads are and it's fine for conversations to happen in their relevant topic boards because people can still talk about whatever they want to talk about. There are apparently lots of you who want to talk about other things, so why not just go to the relevant boards and start some conversations?

I didn't actually know that hidden topics still appear on the trending now list, and I think that's a valid issue. Perhaps that's something that could be addressed?

dollymuchymuchness · 01/03/2022 16:31

Mumsnet HQ, I don't want to see all these war threads. Some of them have extreme titles, which I don't want to read.

Swipe left for the next trending thread
