war topic

any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:
Parpophone · 24/02/2022 17:01

As I recall, the coronavirus topic was only created after there were so many covid related posts that it threatened to take over the whole of MN

Which is exactly what is happening with the current situation.

From a personal point of view it has nothing to do with being anxious or upset, it is just wanting to filter out the worst of the hysteria and nonsense (which I am sure is not very helpful to people who do actually have anxiety and get all of their information about current events from MN).

minipie · 24/02/2022 16:53

Let's get rid of the separate "pregnancy" and "baby names" topics too then. Anyone struggling to conceive can "just hide them".

I doubt these were made separate topics because they are upsetting for those struggling to conceive. Most of the site mentions children after all. More likely they were made separate topics because they are only really of interest to people who are ttc or pregnant.

As I recall, the coronavirus topic was only created after there were so many covid related posts that it threatened to take over the whole of MN. Again, I don’t believe it was created because some people were anxious about covid and would be upset by seeing posts on it.

I am not MNHQ though so will stand corrected if anxiety or upset was behind these topics being created.

@shreddednips

No I don't agree, people can hide threads they don't want to read.
Great.

Parpophone · 24/02/2022 16:25

It's not about "sticking our heads in the sand".

As a pp has pointed out, having a seperate topic means that people can hide it and just dip in as and when.

Some of the comments (on other threads, not this one) are already bordering on hysteria and I can't imagine how damaging they are to anyone with less than robust mental health.

If we can all be told to "just hide the thread then" why can't people equally be expected to "just post under the correct topic"?

If it was all rational, informed discussion about what is currently going on then fair enough, but we are already at the point today when the following are being discussed almost as as foregone conclusions.

Prepping.
Conscription.
Total annihilation by a nuclear strike.
Evacuating the UK.
People overheard discussing buying guns.
Too scared to send the kids to school.

Just as, at the beginning of the pandemic we were all going to be welded into our homes and rotting bodies would be piling up in the streets.

I am sure that all the posters who allegedly had a close friend in the cabinet or family members who were consultants/scientists will now suddenly have access to important information from military generals which they need to share on MN.

As someone who doesn't live in the UK I was roundly told on several covid threads that I wasn't entitled to have an opinion, but all of a sudden people are experts on what is happening in a country that some of them probably couldn't even pinpoint on a map.

A580Hojas · 24/02/2022 15:47

Why not? It partly helped when there were hundreds of covid-19 threads going on at the same time.

saraclara · 24/02/2022 15:46

@TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo

No no no no no.

This is not a subject that should be hidden away in case it makes people feel nervous. The Ukrainians deserve better than that.

If you want to avoid it then hide threads discussing it.

This is huge and could have devastating and far reaching effects on us all.

Again, giving it its own branch is not hiding it. Any more than the Covid branch was 'hidden' (it wasn't, btw)

looklikeanelephant · 24/02/2022 15:43

Also yes this is current but some people found corona annoying and/or upsetting when again it never bothered me but they made a separate topic for it so why not this?

looklikeanelephant · 24/02/2022 15:41

I don't get why someone would be furious just because mumsnet would possibly put a new topic in? Why would it matter to you? I don't mind seeing things about Ukraine and Russia because I want to know what's happening but other people may not want to and hiding every second thread will mean they still see the titles anyway. It seems daft to be offended by someone being offended. Not everyone is in the same situation as you and sometimes their mental health may be suffering and mumsnet could be a great source of comfort to them in those times.

Thoosa · 24/02/2022 15:38

It’s current. Most of the world are talking about it. It’s a bit soon to be sweeping it under the carpet.

saraclara · 24/02/2022 15:35

It's not about hiding them. It's about putting them all under one branch.

And I'm with the OP on this. I don't want to hide threads, but sometimes I come online for escapism, and every second OP being a variation of the others on the subject gets a) annoying, and b) stressful when you've come here to get away from it.

Also I don't want to hide threads, because sometimes I WILL go on line to read about it. Because yes, it's important. Important enough for its own branch, as Covid was.

thelittlestrhino · 24/02/2022 15:31

@Samcro

Absolutely agree. Even CBBC Newsround is covering it - in an appropriate way. This should absolutely not be hidden away. Thankfully OP's other thread seems overwhelmingly to disagree with her.

I have not started any other threads about this.
I started this one 10 days ago before it kicked off. Just posted to lightheartedly agree about wordle.

I am so sorry! I obviously wasn't paying enough attention.
SmellinOfTroy · 24/02/2022 15:30

@Juno22

I will be furious MN if you do this just to pacify one person who seems unwilling to hide threads they are not interested in.
I agree with this - AIBU and Chat are for issues affecting people at the time they want to talk about it. Not when you feel you should or shouldnt

Mumsnet is for people (mainly women) everywhere, and they are all as important as each other.

Why dont you tell us why a woman in the Ukraines experiences today who wants to talk shouldn't. You have a 'hide thread' function, alternatively dont click on it. If it isnt titled correctly, well theres your chance to hide it

minipie · 24/02/2022 15:29

Sorry no. There are hundreds of subjects discussed on here that could potentially make some users feel anxious. MNHQ can’t give them all their own section, and even if they did, there would be plenty of people who post about that topic in AIBU or chat etc.

It’s just not feasible.

CiderWithLizzie · 24/02/2022 15:24

I agree with a new topic. They are not hidden away.

User76745333 · 24/02/2022 15:22

Please no separate topics. Otherwise you get people pouncing if you dare mention it and saying that you have to use a separate topic. It’s just ridiculous when the topic is of such significance

Livpool · 24/02/2022 15:20

Thanks @TellMeMoreHellebore I do have (medically-diagnosed) anxiety but don't worry about being rude about mental illness. I do hide boards I don't want to read btw.

Oh, and I don't wear pearls

heldinadream · 24/02/2022 14:38

No no no. That would be a mistake. Honestly people who are made anxious have to learn to monitor their own boundaries and not expect the rest of us to take care of them all the time, it's ridiculous. Possibly if the situation is ongoing there might be an argument for a special board - in a few weeks time. But to cordon it off now would be a massive mistake, it's literally the thing everyone should be attending to and getting to grips with unless for some reason they need not to.

This is an adult forum not a kindergarten.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 24/02/2022 14:32

Ridiculous suggestion, This topic should not be hidden away.

WouldIwasShookspeared · 24/02/2022 14:21

If you are wanting to assess the level of interest for this, Lily and are wanting posters to say which they'd prefer then my vote is no to a war topic, I'd prefer it kept as is.

FairyCakeWings · 24/02/2022 14:12

I think this is a good idea.

It worked with the coronavirus topic and Covid gave us far more to chat or be unreasonable about in our day to day lives than war in Ukraine can right now.

It would be a nice thing to do for all the people that are getting anxiety at every mention of it.

This. I don't want to read about pushchairs or wordle so I don't open the threads. I'm also not reading many of the "war" threads either, but I wouldn't dream of expecting them to be shoved into the darkest corner in order not to "upset".
