Why would there be costs? They won't be managing or maintaining a separate topic any more than they do any other! And no-one is talking about making it mandatory. It would be on the same basis as any other topic. MNHQ don't pre-moderate, so there wouldn't be anyone having to assume responsibility for it.

There will always be people who don't post in the 'right' place - it happens all the time. But once people know the topic exists, as with Brexit and Covid, most people do post there.

Please note - I'm not asking about the thing to be policed either.

The asks on here keep growing so that its not just a separate topic but also for the threads on the subject to be hidden from active and trending and actively moved into the "quarantine" space so that the whole subject is rendered invisible unless you happen to know its there and go looking - OTBT for Ukraine. Because gods forbid adults should be expected to manage what they read in any way at all.

I wouldn't mind betting the cost of managing the covid topic has been pretty significant in terms of mod time alone and that is one factor going into the decision making.

They also have the benefit of actual numbers of Ukraine related threads every day rather than the perceptions of individual posters.

For me new topic/no new topic is simply a matter of numbers and traffic on the subject. Its the wider policing of the subject which is being demanded that I have issues with. I'm an adult, its my responsibility to hide AIBU/chat at times when I just don't want to risk seeing subjects to which I'm sensitive at the time.

I sometimes think I read MN in an alternative universe. If I look at "active threads" the only Ukraine related thread on page 1 is this one:

If I look at the trending threads, the only one in the rotation is thread 9 of the long running discussion thread on the subject. Also not sensationalist or fear mongering.

Perhaps HQ are counting actual threads and styles rather than perceptions and still don't have enough activity to merit a new topic and all that would go with it.

There's been 5 more days of scaremongering threads and further requests for a topic so maybe time for a review.

If MNHQ decide not to create another board that's their prerogative, clearly. I just don't understand why it takes them such a long time to make a decision!

This isn't to say that we're never going to make changes with regards to this discussion - but we're reviewing this as we go along. It's an enormous topic at the moment and it's everywhere (not just on Mumsnet). If you need to hide a thread, you can do this without even looking at the opening post. I’ve just tried 3 times to hide one of the threads about a bomb hitting the uk. It’s still showing on my list of threads. Im terrified about the events that are going on and have been trying to put it to the back of my mind as much as possible yet seeing these threads is making this really hard. I’m going to have to stop visiting this site as it’s too upsetting. I don’t see the point of posting these doom mongering threads anyway because if it all kicks off then the whole world is fucked anyway.
