any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:

@Sparklingbrook

Oh yes, the very difficult to find Covid topic? Or the impossible to find Sex topic? All hidden away where nobody can find them. Grin When I want to discuss my cat I have to spend all that time searching and searching for the Litter Tray topic.
I only discovered very recently, because of a thread moaning about a sex thread not being in the correct topic, that there was a sex topic.

Not everyone goes into the individual topics and instead uses most active.

FinallyFree2022 · 26/02/2022 23:05

PLEASE

then the ambiguously titled threads can easily be identified as being related to the topic and not clicked on unintentionally.

@Sparklingbrook

I am not keen to read about the war personally but is is pathetic for everything to have to be hidden - we all know it is happening

How would it be hidden? Confused The threads will still come up in Trending (you can't stop that, sadly) and if you want to discuss it just open up the topic and there are all the threads.

This! I really don’t get these comments.

I mean, if the COVID board was a human then they’d be totally shite at playing hide and seek!

BIWI · 26/02/2022 22:30

They would also show up in Active Convos.

Definitely not hidden!

@labyrinthlaziness how would its own topic be hiding it?

Is the covid board hidden?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 26/02/2022 22:10

they don’t want to hear fearmongering, arrant nonsense and pointless speculation.

I'm startled by the number of posters who express the view that Ukraine is tiny with all the confidence of those who are so convinced of this that it doesn't occur to them to Google this assertion. Substitute any other claims such as Ukraine not having any borders with relevant countries or being nowhere near Poland etc.

BIWI · 26/02/2022 22:00

And once again. A separate topic would not mean that it would be hidden!

labyrinthlaziness · 26/02/2022 21:59

@Juno22

I will be furious MN if you do this just to pacify one person who seems unwilling to hide threads they are not interested in.

CecilyTheWake · 26/02/2022 21:54

@psychomath

The MN collective logic on this seems to be that if at any time you don't want to hear about horrific suffering and the supposed imminence of nuclear war then you're being a feeble-minded ostrich, but if you express any sadness about the situation you're virtue signalling and making it all about yourself Confused

(Incidentally, ostriches don't actually bury their heads in the sand to hide from predators, which is pretty obvious if you think about it because as an evolutionary strategy that would be crap. They do it cos they have their nests underground and occasionally turn their eggs so they get heated more evenly.)

Because unfortunately, it seems the majority of people posting about it do actually fall into one or other of those categories. They’re incapable of posting about it without reference to how they feel.

As far as I’ve seen (and I’m prepared to be corrected) most of the posts on MN about the war have been from wet lettuces worrying abstractly if it will affect their broccoli in Hook Norton, people without a grip on reality wanting to donate to Ukrainian pet shelters/stream Ukrainian music to show solidarity and preppers buying tins of beans.

It’s not that people don’t want to hear about it, it’s that they don’t want to hear fearmongering, arrant nonsense and pointless speculation.

I currently have 11 topics NOT hidden. it makes such a difference to my Active list. So much better.
I also don't understand how a seperate topic is sweeping it under the carpet. It's making it important enough for it's own topic.

AlternativePerspective · 26/02/2022 17:27

Why on earth do posters persist with the belief that creating a dedicated topic = 'sweeping it under the carpet' or 'hiding it away'?! because many of them think we should have these topics shoved in our faces, and they know that if there is a dedicated topic people will hide it.

I remember when the COVID topic came into being there were people saying “this is important, everyone should be made to see it.” When actually a huge number of us (me included) hid the topic so we didn’t have to see the constant fearmongering and conspiracy crap on it.

I have the feminism topics hidden for similar reasons.

merrymouse · 26/02/2022 17:08

But just creating a topic without making it blindingly obvious to any poster on the main topics that there is a topic about the geopolitical situation is hiding it away amongst many topics.

It’s only hidden if there are no active conversations, in which case the thread would quickly drift off the first few pages of AIBU and chat.

cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 16:47

If there was a big sticky at the top of AIBU / Chat saying - this is where the threads on Geopolitics are, then it might work.

This is a really important topic. There are so many topics, it could get lost amongst them.

Having a really big 'signpost' so people know that if they click on it, it will take them to those threads might work.

But just creating a topic without making it blindingly obvious to any poster on the main topics that there is a topic about the geopolitical situation is hiding it away amongst many topics.
@saraclara, I know it's annoying you but it's annoying me that people are shallow enough to get annoyed by trivia like this when a sovereign country has been invaded and innocent people have been killed. It's petty and offensive that people want to just tidy it out of view so that their entertainment isn't disrupted.
I disagree with this sweeping viewpoint.

Personally, I think a separate board could be a good idea. I certainly don’t view that as me wanting to sweep it under the rug or to bury it in a corner.

I want to keep up with views on here. For me, that would be easier to do if all posts were in o e place - rather then checking through AIBU and Chat etc. I think the COVID board was simple enough for everyone to get used to and to know where to go.

Labelling people as shallow, petty and offensive is a tad arrogant!

ragged · 26/02/2022 15:43

"Emergency of the Year" topic?
or
"Crisis threads" ?

Would have been Swine flu, Ebola, Covid, Ukraine...

BearOfEasttown · 26/02/2022 14:37

@CecilyTheWake

‘AIBU to be sobbing and shaking and terrified’. Yes, grow up.

Agree with this. Unless you are in Ukraine or Russia right now, why the fuck are you sobbing shaking and terrified? Attention-seeking narcissistic behaviour at its worst.

CecilyTheWake · 26/02/2022 12:49

@ClaudineClare

I agree we need a separate topic for Ukraine. MNHQ also need to be more watchful for the fearmongering threads that pop up.
Yes, it’s getting ridiculous. People need to get a bloody grip.

‘AIBU to be sobbing and shaking and terrified’. Yes, grow up.

See also the eleven million threads asking why Russia and Ukraine are at war.

merrymouse · 26/02/2022 12:18

There is no topic which won't generate its share of batshittery.

Almost all the threads on Ukraine are batshittery at the moment. I wouldn’t know how to find an informed thread.

Topics only become tumbleweed if nobody posts. A thread isn’t more easy to find because it is on page 3 of AIBU.

It’s also sometimes difficult to distinguish between a genuine concern that might be a bit batshit and trolling. (See numerous Covid threads).

A separate topic allows people to hide the whole thing if they want to avoid the subject, while still giving space to a genuine poster obsessing about nuclear war.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 26/02/2022 12:17

The geopolitical instability will probably continue for some time in either an acute or lower-level way.

It would be good to have a sub-board ready to sweep everything into because the number of threads on this is absurd. A fair number are subsequently deleted and those that remain have some useful discussion but not always.

Associatepeggy · 26/02/2022 12:11

@C8H10N4O2 I was meaning to talk about the reasons why people don't ask for a separate topic about it.

C8H10N4O2 · 26/02/2022 12:02

Mil threads are different because people are posting their own individual situations

The main rationale for creating a new subdivision on a site or forum is usually volume of traffic to sustain a discussion. The subjective importance of the individual topic is irrelevant. Any topic in the news will generate threads for a while. Most die away after days and weeks and a separate topic would become tumbleweed.

There is no topic which won't generate its share of batshittery.
