You can never complete avoid a topic if you read any of the big boards or active.

But you can avoid the more batshit/borderline offensive threads if they are moved.

I never use the actual boards - find them far too clumsy. I just use active topics so I can see a wide range of topics. That suits me best.

You have said it better than I did.

Covid was a perfect example. At the start of the pandemic I did hide the covid board. But still saw threads about it daily because people post elsewhere.

I think Ukraine is too wide a topic to have its own as there are several different subjects which could easily start to talk about the conflict.

The easiest thing has always been - scroll past if a thread isn't of interest.

But if it's in a topic you have blocked you wouldn't see it at all.

As hard as these things are this forum isn't specifically for these things.

Obviously this is something for the site to decide, but I would argue that helping people who are struggling is more important to MN than promoting click baity and ill informed AIBU threads.

Threads on Ukraine continue to appear in active convos unless somebody has decided to customise what they can see.

It’s easier to find a thread in a particular topic because threads in AIBU and chat quickly move off the first page unless people are currently posting.

You may as well ask, why don't adults have the ability to search for topics they're interested in?

That assumes you know they are there. I look in some individual topics but I also scan through active to see what is being discussed.

I'd argue that it makes more sense for those who know they want to avoid a topic to search for the specific issues they wish to read. You can never complete avoid a topic if you read any of the big boards or active. Covid, Brexit and similar big topic threads still routinely appear in AIBU, Chat and various other topics until and if they are moved.

People may hide the topic so not to see war threads but miss discussions on how energy prices will be affected for example.

I think they are more likely to miss a post about energy prices if it’s on page 5 of AIBU or chat.

If it was a forum only to discuss depression or miscarriage etc then you would have a point but it isn't.

That's a rabbit hole we shouldn't go down. What about posters who as a result of miscarriage don't want to read about others as it's too raw for them?

A Ukraine topic would not stop those threads appearing in active convos. It would just allow people to choose to hide the topic.

But that will always happen, specific board or not. There is a news board I believe yet the posts are not in there currently.

Then you have to accept you may open threads you don't want to read. That's just common sense. If you don't want to read it close it and move on.

Because the forum offers an active post thread which people use. It makes the forum easy to use. I suspect most won't actively search for a specific board unless you have a question. If you want to read varied threads then active threads is the best way to do that.

How would you know if you were interested in a thread unless you've read it ? What would you search for? Given people will call threads different things?

I too have come across threads I don't want to read as they hit too close to home but I don't think that's on Mumsnet to stop me seeing them.

I have been an active user of this forum for a number of years and didn't realise there was a sex topic. Ironically I only discovered it due to someone posting about how upset they were that a sec topic wasn't in the sex board.

Why have we, as adults lost the ability to scroll past a thread that doesn't interest us or we don't want to read?

That's not always how it works. There was a news event a couple of years ago that I found extremely difficult to hear about as it concerned something I was close to IRL, and I ended up avoiding MN completely for a few days because I knew people would have started threads about it. Just seeing that they were there would have set me off - even though I was already thinking about it 24/7, and the thread titles wouldn't have said anything I didn't already know. I realise this is irrational and if it was someone else telling me about it I wouldn't understand it either.

There are going to be people on this forum who have family and friends in Ukraine that they're worried about right now, people who've lived through other conflicts or lost loved ones in wars etc, or just people for whom war has been a huge irrational fear all their life, and some of them might feel the same. In that case, why should they not be able to use the site because others think all the "What country would you flee to if Russia invaded the UK" threads are soooo important they can't possibly be on any board except AIBU/Chat?

That is kind of the point.

People don't all read in the same way or even through the same interfaces so the logical and objective break point for creating a new topic is sustained volume of traffic rather than what any one of us sees through our preferred viewpoint.

Anything else is entirely subjective based on who shouts loudest.

Posts on this subject are so wide ranging that they will be on many areas of the forum. You can't expect the mods to check them all to ensure they are in the "correct" topic.
