Would it be feasible to have a <board name> : All view?

81 replies

ErrolTheDragon · 24/06/2021 10:25

This suggestion arises out of the feminism boards rearrangement - some people like two boards but many want to see all feminist threads at once. I think this would better accommodate all users and reduce some of the discontent.

I believe it might be useful elsewhere, eg Education. Most parents are interested in the stages their DC are at, others may be interested in all of them.

Another possibility (though i'd guess would take quite a bit more to implement) would be if we could have a 'favourites' view so that we could see all threads in our favourite topics at once - mine would include both feminism boards, gardening and HE at the moment,

Starting a thread while in a non-specific view should be fine, just fill in the topic title as happens already if you start a new thread while in active or threads I'm on etc.

If this is technically feasible, I can't see any downside.

Any update please?

I've not seen the threads you're talking about (have been avoiding ones I anticipate will exhaust me at the moment! ) but reporting just draws MNHQ's attention to a post - you can outline in your email report what your question/ issue is.
Confirming that tagging @mnhq doesn't do anything - best options are starting threads in Site Stuff, tagging a specific mod, reporting a post or emailing the general "contact us" address.

ArabellaScott · 28/06/2021 14:44

Maybe, Errol, but I am really averse to reporting. I do strongly believe people have the right to say what they think, even if it's rude or unpleasant or upsetting.

I report posts when I think someone is vulnerable, that's about it, really.

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 28/06/2021 12:38

Completely ignoring the FWR sitch, this would be very helpful for health and disability things. Frequently it isn't entirely clear which area would be best to post in, and posts get missed.

Say for eg my periods have stopped, and I have an autoimmune condition - do I post in the quieter women's health section, busiest general health, menopause, or autoimmune illness? Being able to see multiple sections that are relevant to you means someone may see your post who otherwise would miss it.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2021 12:23

You should report such posts, Arabella. They're not 'in the spirit'. Whether they're deleted or the poster gets ticked off or not, it shows that this split doesn't solve all the perceived problems.

I'd hope posts on Site Stuff threads are all read, but in general if we don't report problems when we see them, we have to assume MNHQ doesn't know about them. Sticking @MNHQ into a post, afaik, does nothing.

Well, I feel really unwelcome on 'feminist chat', now, it has been made pretty clear by several other posters that I'm to stay out of 'their' space.

I am less likely to post there, and don't want any of my threads moved onto a board where I'm likely to get attacked for even being there.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2021 08:30

@DaisiesandButtercups

It sounds like some people would really like those with a GC perspective to be completely barred from feminism: chat.
Given that MNHQ has moved some threads started by GC posters over there, that's pretty clearly not what they intend.

Undersnatch · 26/06/2021 18:15

Adding support for the all view - those of us that see no distinction between our ‘GC’ feminism (for want of a better name) and feminism - it’s not fun having to switch between boards. Practically and emotionally.

WanderinWomb · 25/06/2021 18:04

@ArabellaScott

But, and I am not a techy person, it won't be 'merging' the boards, just making both visible at once. Keeping each thread in its respective board, but adding a facility to view both boards at once.
Yes when I say merge I mean merged view for ME.

If one imagines all the talk boards as huge tree, branching off into smaller branches (discussion topics)
The two smaller branches still exist separately, but am looking from one step back to the larger branch before they separate. Those who only want to see the one smaller branch still can, it still exists.

WanderinWomb · 25/06/2021 17:57

@stumbledin

This is an irrelevant suggestion unless and until *@MNHQ* bothers to come on both feminist boards and explain what the difference is meant to be.

It is a complete mess, as one board has rules, one doesn't, but the same topics are getting posted on both boards.

Still its giving the outsiders who monitor mumsnet a lot of laughs.

They couldn't have done better themselves in destroying what was a powerful voice for women's rights into an apolitical nonetity.

Please can we have one board for feminist - ie women's rights.

Those who are put off to be seen to be feminist could have a board called equality rights.

There is nobody posting on mumsnet and mumsnet itself who is entitled to say what is or is not feminist.

What was mumsnet USP has been tarnished and the damaged the reputation that few have kept in the social media warrior wars of maintaining a balance.

Can we please go back to being growns ups.

I agree with the rest of your post but the above. For those of us who don't care or have no idea what goes where "View All" is a brilliant facility until MN explain the difference between the two subjects (if they ever do)

WanderinWomb · 25/06/2021 17:45

ID politics is now tacitly being left out of the separated out chat threads. Which was an explicit intention

Was it? Do you have a link to where MN said they wanted some posters to shut up? Or do you have some inside info?

Please elaborate, I don't think I understand your meaning at all? Confused.

I love this idea .

Please a ' View All'

Would cut down on duplicated posts, lost posts and searching back through two unconnected URLs.
Those who want to filter still can and it de-weaponises the malicious reporters who are going to give the mods a really hard time demanding things be moved. It's a win win for everyone.

Brilliant idea.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 25/06/2021 12:54

I find the link is enough for my needs, as it shows up wherever I am on the feminism boards. And I rather like being able to see the difference between the two boards at the moment, just to see how the changes are working.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/06/2021 10:37

We do need to be patient.

I was surprised (and pleased) by the rapid addition of the links. But an extra link or two on a web page is pretty trivial. An ':all' function would need more work - firstly, is it feasible, then prioritise... design, implement, test. If GUI changes were needed in the apps, moreso,

Doing things properly - including assessing feasibility/desirability - takes time. (I write software.... )

I like the new quick link to the “other” feminism board but agree I would greatly appreciate a “view all” option. Then people who don’t want to read GC views don’t have to, but people who want to read all, can.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/06/2021 23:03

Agree, it woudl be really useful not just for FWR but for other boards.

I agree. I don't understand what the objections are. If you don't want to see S&G, don't switch it on.

ClosdesMouches · 24/06/2021 19:17

I think both suggestions are great.

LizzieSiddal · 24/06/2021 19:15

Thank you, I’ve got it!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/06/2021 18:18

@Borka

You need to be in a thread, not on the list of all the threads, and then the link is at the top of the thread. Hope that makes sense!
In mobile yes. On desktop the link is at the top of the list of threads.

LizzieSiddal · 24/06/2021 18:08

Could anyone let me know where the new link is? I can’t find it. I’m not on the app so maybe it’s only there? TIA

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/06/2021 16:43

I think that's a great idea (both of them)!

Crockof · 24/06/2021 16:35

I'd bloody love a favourites section

ArabellaScott · 24/06/2021 16:33

@Floisme

Ah yes I can see the link. Ideally I'd really like to have an option to merge both sets of thread titles for viewing purposes only, and I imagine this would also be useful for some of the other split boards too. But this is helpful, thanks MNHQ.
