Hide threads containing a particular word or phrase

YourSexNotGenderIsOnFire · 13/06/2021 23:15

I would like to suggest a feature which allows you to automatically hide all threads containing a particular word or phrase. I know you can already hide a given topic or thread, but this could be much more useful.

It would allow people with PTSD to avoid certain triggers (eg by blocking words like "rape").

This could also be a nifty solution for those who want to read the feminism board but don't want to see any threads relating to trans issues. If this feature was available they could simply decide to hide all threads that referred to eg "trans" or "transwomen." This would be much better than trying to split the board into sex/gender and other issues (which IMO seems unworkable given the nature of the threads on FWR).

Would such a feature be possible?

The more think about this the more it pisses me off. Even my mute suggestion is not good idea as nothing worse than someone gobbng off then warrants a reply only to find out the muted you! Obviously it’s never happened to me it’s conscience I all of suddenly go quiet for 3 or 7days in Reddit Halo

Who’s idea was it to split the FWR? I’m no smart arse or would even say I feminist but I struggling to see this being idea of feminist or those standing up for women’s rights.

I someone who happens to be a woman with vested interest in matters that directly impact me because I am bloody woman.

I read FWR to learn stuff or read to gauge opinions from other women you know to broaden that prospective of mine. I expect this from FWR - the women have kept that bar of standards which is why really frustrated me that they have had to dumb down tip toe around words so as to not hurt mens feelings and include them in what is matters concerning me a woman!

So yes am pissed off that Feminist / women rights and basically any woman with an opinion are expected to roll over or that even making alternative suggestions.

How about NO! Saying No is hell of fuck nicer than response get if tell Posters in AIBU to be nice and kind.

Makes you wonder motive behind it given that you need thicker skin using AIBU than do FWR. Starts with FWR then it will filter right across site.

I have no skin in game, no loyalties to any site, it’s convenient for me that FWR stuff in one place but women are resourceful. Adult daughter will just have painful task of showing me to figure out how to use the O

somethinghastogive46 · 15/06/2021 07:30

Yes I think this would be a great feature!

Vanishun · 15/06/2021 06:27

I also think no matter what you choose, so many threads will be interrupted with a "make sure you tag this OP" or messaging mumsnet. It's effectively the same workload for mods as creating a whole lot of new boards.

Vanishun · 15/06/2021 05:19

I think letting posters tag posts with themes like Reddit would be a good idea. You'd have to keep them simple and you'd have to apply this to the apps too.

But they shouldn't be mandatory and it shouldn't all be negative tags.

I'm also not so sure about just hiding everything with a certain tag, although I couldn't logically tell you why. I guess I feel like we're all adults and should be able to glance over a list of threads without a lot of trouble, then choose a certain tag if we wanted to to dive into a subject. Going another way just feels like even more of echo chamber behaviour.

PotterOtter · 15/06/2021 04:54

I don't like the idea of a separate board as it 'dilutes' the user pool. In its present state if you want to discuss other feminist issues at least there's still a high chance that a good number of people will see it and thus, reply. What will work though, is tags. I think it'd be great if we could tag posts, and have these tags work as filters e.g. clicking on a tag that says 'sports' will bring up all threads on that board related to sports, and typing 'prisons' in a filter list will exclude all threads tagged 'prisons'.

quixote9 · 15/06/2021 03:35

A filter for those who want one, and just the regular smorgasbord for the rest of us.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 14/06/2021 23:00

I really don’t want a separate board, I feel this is the more intellectual board on mumsnet, don’t destroy it; gender critical feminists have been pushed off all the North American platforms and cancelled, n

Skysblue · 14/06/2021 22:56

Sounds like a good idea OP.

Requiring women’s concerns about gender ideology to be discussed in a private corner of mumsnet sounds creepily like censorship to me. Sad that it’s even being discussed on a forum originally created to support women.

WoolOfBat · 14/06/2021 22:19

I like the FWR board as it is. But I think it is better if sensitive people can hide threads than to split the board. I don’t see how a split board would work as biological sex is essential for feminism.

If part of the board was “trans friendly”, then what? Would we eventually be in a situation where maternity rights couldn’t be discussed as not “trans friendly”? I wish that was far fetched but I have seen what has happened on various breast feeding, maternity and PCOS boards.

At least if there was a “hide button” discussions could flow organically and if the content developed in a certain way (say after page 15) sensitive readers could avoid it.

PearPickingPorky · 14/06/2021 21:59

@SisterMonicaJoansHabit

Some of us have had the whole FWR board hidden, for a long time, to save us this trouble. Which is why your threads are often moved from chat and aibu - because we've already muted one entire section of the board to solve the majority of the issue for us.
That's good then, it'll stop you seeing the vast majority of the feminism threads. Obviously feminism comes up on other boards occasionally too, just like every single other topic/board.
Taswama · 14/06/2021 21:51

I think this is a good idea.

AnyOldPrion · 14/06/2021 16:49

I’d love a mute button that would hide posts that contain certain phrases, or perhaps the ability to mute certain posters, rather than whole threads. That way I wouldn’t miss an entire interesting thread because of one or two posts/posters that are distressing.

fairynick · 14/06/2021 15:33

I think it’s a good idea.

I would find it really useful because sometimes I’ll be reading a random thread where a miscarriage story is shared - I find this distressing and it’s difficult to avoid.

FactsAndFigs · 14/06/2021 15:28

How about mute derail not in good faith user button just for FWR.

That way I can read the informative stuff without all the unnecessary clutter because that’s what FWR is - information & discussions it’s not like AIBU where enter at risk of having your arse handed on plate.

Definitely against dividing up the FWR boards as it will be to messy & disorganised of what goes where as related to both feminism & WR.

Please leave it way it is - Thread title gives gis of what it regarding.

IAmAWomanNotACis · 14/06/2021 15:21

This is a brilliant idea and I support it 100%.

ScreamingMeMe · 14/06/2021 13:39

@PearPickingPorky

This is a great idea.

It would be good if there was an option at the top of the FWR board where you could click "hide" and the sex/gender threads were all hidden, just for that visit too.

There are days where I feel that the onslaught by TRAs against women and girls is so overwhelming and distressing that I don't want to see it, and I would like to read and join in on the other threads on FWR about other women's issues , eg abortion, the harms of porn, childbirth etc.

But the following day then I will feel more able to stomach it and I will want to see them again, so I wouldn't want it to be a one-time selection that couldn't be reversed.

I feel exactly the same at times.
Hopeishere52 · 14/06/2021 13:34

This sounds like a good solution I think it is better than dividing the
board

Floisme · 14/06/2021 13:23

If it's possible to do this, it sounds a much better plan than creating a split board, which feels less workable every time I think about it. This way, anyone who doesn't like current set up has the means to do something about it, and it also puts the onus on them to take action, instead of expecting the current board users to move over.
I'd be interested to hear what objections there are, if any.

MargaretFraggle · 14/06/2021 12:59

Great idea.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/06/2021 12:59

This seems easier than a split, I was on a thread yesterday trying to figure out how that would work in practice and it seemed complicated.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/06/2021 12:57

I like the idea of a content warning button. Some OPs add content warning to their headers but some don't, and I've seen MNHQ edit titles to add later. So, you could have a content warning for potentially distressing content across the whole board, and a similar idea in FWR to mark threads which discuss the issue that people don't want to see, to make it easier for them to hide threads or scroll on by.

OhHolyJesus · 14/06/2021 12:52

Having a set of filters for key words or areas of interest would be good, like personal settings beyond being able to select favourite board maybe.

I do prefer this to the idea of having a separate board away from Feminsit chat, or splitting it further into sub categories (mostly as I would then end up repeating posts and we would get TAAT or I would post about based on topic, like surrogacy for example) , but I don't know, can't we scroll past things that aren't of interest, whether it be plain from the title or the OP?

FWIW I think that MNHQ do a good job of supporting free speech generally and each of us need to be responsible for what we expose ourselves to. There are times when I don't click on or read stuff about rape or more violent murders of women as my head can't take it. I don't want to filter that out necessarily I would just not click and read that particular thread if I felt unable to cope with it that day.

I think having a button to indicate a content warning would be useful but then it would need to be for different things, not just self ID/gender ideology, but also for violence, rape, murder, porn, prostitution and child abuse, etc.

HereForTheCakes · 14/06/2021 12:51

I'm open to this suggestion as the thing I can't get my head around is whether it's is possible to discuss Feminism without reference to Sex and Gender. Therefore how will people know whether to post in Feminism or in Sex and Gender? If MN create the sub-board, we are likely to still have posts showing up in either place and further development work needed, so let's consider lots of options up front.
