It was probably just some bored teenagers who did it because they know how to.

Trans activists, it must be. There is a constant campaign to get advertisers to pull out of MN because it is apparently a hot bed of transphobia and 'gender critical' thinking. In past few days I noticed quite a ramping up of Twitter attacks on it, claims that someone with username Transparent was banned from registering because of the name, which I find hard to believe.

DH didn't think it was the type of attack done by bedroom amateurs. It was concerted and would have required a certain level of resourcing. (It other words its not chancers having a laugh. Its organised and very deliberate). When i told him Justine's comments that about it being very common he raised eyebrows. He said yes attacks happened frequently but that comment made it sound rather more usual than in reality too. Then he said there was normally a reason behind such attacks and they were generally targetted rather than random or opportunitistic. In other words MN has pissed off someone.

He didn't really blink about it other than that and said MN were doing everything right and seemed to have things in hand.

I'm sure it will spawn conspiracy theories as to who is behind it. It does prove that someone feels threatened by a bunch of vipers talking about recipes and shoes. Which in someways i find a good thing to hear.

No matter their supposed justifications, my money is on this being done by sad little men who don't like women talking.

Coincidentally 🤨 a fruity agricultural site also seems to have been under attack. Asking the usual "what do these three sites have in common?" Question gives us the likely culprits.

Just a coincidence that there was another coordinated attack around the same time, with mass reporting of a new site where staff & students in “academia” (mainly women in the UK) are logging anonymous accounts of harassment and persecution (mainly by men) due to Gender Critical views?

The reports (that the site was hosting pornographic content) were made to services that blacklist websites, services that are used by ISPs to block access to those sites.

This was being discussed on Mumsnet FWR, including comments from one of the people who helped to set up the GC Academia Network, while MN was being hit by the DDOS attack.

Maybe just a coincidence but it really wouldn’t surprise me if the two events were related.
