Poster accused of being pbp

36 replies

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 19:28

People reporting a post have been wrongly told that OP is a pbp and a troll. They have then stated that on the (innocent and genuine) posters thread.

This should not have happened.

A) Why is MNHQ responding in this way to people reporting a thread? Surely the decisions should be behind the scenes to avoid judgement?

B) How can MNHQ justify the fact that the WRONG information has been given to those reporting, leading to them accusing the OP on a thread in which they needed support?

I am confused about why a post in AIBU was taken down today at the point where women were posting their own stories about what has happened to them and their children to counter the this never happens statements. I think there was someone who became completely awful when challenged about her language and was clearly not truthful . So why was this not explained on the defunct thread ?Did it have to do with the fact that we are not supposed to provide evidence, or ask the questions which had been rephrased from 4 previous ones I believe? What on earth are users to make of it all?

littlepattilou · 04/02/2021 15:33

Wow! THAT has never happened before!!! Someone just put a thread on AIBU (at 3.15pm, less than 20 minutes ago,) asking a question about something on behalf of her DH, and the thread was deleted just this minute, with 'the OP has some privacy concerns' on it.

Seriously WTF? There was no way she or he could be identified.

Absolutely bonkers. Confused

littlepattilou · 04/02/2021 15:13

I do hate this 'why do people get over-invested' bullshit. That's the point of a message board/support forum to talk and communicate, and support each other, and some posters DO like to stay with the thread and make sure the OP is OK. Coz shocker some people are actually quite caring and nice.

That said, I am sick to death of threads with FAKE content, where the OP reels posters in, gets them to spend time and effort and energy helping and supporting them, only to see the whole thread deleted, and all their helpful and supportive posts deleted too.

I have spent quite a bit of time composing a post which was helpful and supportive and took me 20-30 minutes to write, and then the thread vanishes before I click post, with 'TROLL' or 'PBP alert' put on from mumsnet. (OR it goes within 5 or 10 minutes of me submitting my post.).

Or sometimes a thread is deleted, and you get the infuriating message that the OP decided the thread was too 'outing' or identifying, and requested for it to be removed. (I suspect they didn't like the replies they got!)

I sometimes think, why did I even bother to reply? Confused

So I am tending to submit supportive posts now, but not spend more than 5 minutes on any one particular post (on these types of threads, where the OP has a 'dilemma.') Because of the risk of the thread vanishing into the ether!

The problem is there are trolls and trolls. I don’t even count it as troll hunting if it’s someone who comes on asking for stories about children wetting themselves or teenage girls with big boobs or whatever. I’m sure MNHQ disagree Grin but to me that’s just a way (to be blunt here) of trying to minimise a paedophile’s enjoyment.

Cases where it’s like this I do agree with no troll hunting, but I do also think people get very invested and in a way that does encourage trolling. By that I mean a thread might start off being true enough, maybe slightly exaggerated, but the encouragement and cheering and shaking and sobbing turns it into a bit of a pantomime. Also things do inevitably get discussed outside of MN, and that whips up troll hunting sometimes.

Steroidsandantidepressants · 07/12/2020 10:58

Under a different name I was accused of troll hunting for simply asking questions to clarify a situation.

Mumsnet deleted the offending post accusing me of that but I immediately name changed and I still feel really hurt and upset.

I report to mumsnet, I never go on a thread and say I have, I report and leave the thread.

I have, in the past, reported and not had any kind of response, no email in reply, so I’m a bit confused that people always get an email.

ShirleyPhallus · 07/12/2020 10:09

@MichelleBauble

MN have apologised for their error - fair enough, none of us are perfect.

What got me about the whole thing that was someone had reported the thread to MNHQ as they suspected trolling - fair enough, that's the right way to do it instead of making snarky comments on the thread.

What they should then have done is just left it to MNHQ to deal with itinstead of coming straight back to the thread to say gleefully that they have reported and then quote what MN had replied.

As it happens, the reply from MN was incorrect, but leaving that aside, if you report something and receive a reply, that should remain private correspondence between you and MNHQ. Absolutely no need to go tattling on the thread about the "private" reply you have received.

I dunno. Sometimes it takes a while for MNHQ to actually take down the whole post and in that time, a load more posters have commented their entire life story and offered very specific help / support / PM me for cash type offers
Sparklingbrook · 07/12/2020 10:08

Oh god the drama. It's a Talk Forum. Confused

@PurpleDaisies

Or maybe posters could accept that there are very occasionally cases of human error and we can all get on with our day without making a one-off situation a teachable moment for MNHQ?

Absolutely. How many reports are made every day? It must be hundreds. Every now and again there’s going to be a mistake.

Absolutely this. Put down the pitchforks.

As an aside, that poster and situation is genuine, but those types of posts in general get my troll-dar going. Many similar situations do turn out to be trolls. People get massively sucked in to other people’s posts, invest loads of time and emotion in to a stranger just to find out it is a troll.

PurpleDaisies · 07/12/2020 08:48
@tenyearsgone if you can't see why people might be invested in and emotional about a woman being empowered by perfect strangers to do arguably one of the hardest things in the world, and take her child away from a future of violence and fear, then I feel sorry for you.
You don’t know that any of it is real.

AuntieStella · 07/12/2020 06:22

They tried discontinuing the individual responses to reports.

It went down badly, and they were reinstated. I think it is right they exist.

But a review of which 'stock' emails can be sent when might help reduce error. Nothing that mentions a PBP until thread is down?

Tenyearsgone · 07/12/2020 00:22

Perhaps if posters didn't get so over invested in threads on here like it was an episode of Eastenders, MN wouldn't get trolled so much and situations like this wouldn't arise.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 23:56

I AM disputing the wisdom of telling post reporters the reason why the reported post was banned, if there is even a chance it could be an error

It was just a mistake in this case. They sent the wrong email to the wrong person. The system generally works absolutely fine.

It’s nice to know when you’ve reported something whether you were right to be suspicious or not.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 23:54

*of course, not ourselves 🤦🏻‍♀️ sorry, autocorrect hates me....

Of ourselves there will be mistakes, no one is perfect! And MNHQ have a hell of a job, no one is disputing that Hmm

Can someone tell me what pbp isplease

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 23:44

@Tenyearsgone thank you, but the point of this was MNHQ disclosing wrong information which was then shared on the OPs thread, not any hyperbole on the thread!

Thank you for replying *@RivkaMumsnet*, but would you please consider ways to avoid this happening again? Maybe not sending a mail at all and letting the reporter know by the deletion message?

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 23:39

@Tenyearsgone

I think MNHQ should let people know the conclusion to their reports.

And blame the trolls for people disbelieving some of the utter bollocks posted on here.

If there are checks to make sure that conclusion is right, and a genuine poster doesn’t get abuse because of an error I totally agree with you.

Btw I’ve never got a reply as to why a thread I’ve reported got deleted, only the general thread message. And that’s fine Smile

@kojay

That post has stuck in my head all day . Hope she's ok
She's a random on the internet, all the weeping and wailing over her thread was ridiculous.

Offer support, yes. but the amount of 'I have tears streaming down my face reading this' posts were embarrassing to read.
