How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

Mine only went up to 4, MrsB - still too annoying for me to cope with I had to go in and mark them all as read. Grin

MrsBrunch · 14/11/2020 12:10

I'm going to ignore it forever and see how high the number can go.

PuppyMonkey · 14/11/2020 12:07

Just came on here to see if there's a way of turning it off, so will wait for the announcement. What a life. Grin

@JanineMumsnet have you responded to the issue about separating thread notifications from PM notifications? Is this something you’re going to fix?

HoneysuckIejasmine · 13/11/2020 15:00

@rslsys

You have got to understand that the Tech Team have to get home from school and do their homework before they can start looking at these problems. Then it’s evening meal and a bit more coding before bed. Fortunately the weekend is coming up so they might be able to devote a few more hours to it 🤣🤣🤣
Very unfair, and quite ignorant.
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 13/11/2020 14:54

Please please make it stop.

Patronising, rude, unfair.
vanillandhoney · 13/11/2020 14:22

I'm not sure that's fair - MNHQ have said they're working on giving people the ability to turn it off - so hardly "refusing to listen".

So why don't they just turn it off completely until they've sorted out all the bugs?

Oh, I missed that. @JanineMumsnet - sorry, I'll stand down. Blush
@JanineMumsnet - you do realise that it's very frustrating that you keep coming on here to address the odd fix, but have ignored the many, many comments on here from people saying they just don't like the notifications at all. It sounds as if you are refusing to listen! Angry

Please get rid of it and bring back the bell icon for PM notifications - I know @FlouncerInDenial is with me on this...
Apart from when Justine said they are going to add a "turn off" option but it might take a week...

Just an update - those users who said they had an issue whereby they couldn't click the Mumsnet account menu, we have now released a fix for this, so this should now be working.

Please make it stop! The mark as read does not work properly for me.

BoomBoomsCousin · 13/11/2020 01:20

Yet another vote against this poorly thought out “feature”. As well as the poorly executed code you’ve put in, taking lots of different types of notification and squashing them together without giving people control over what shows makes the flag worse than useless (because it’s distracting without providing useful information) for anyone who is not interested in knowing every single thing you have decided might possibly be of interest.

There have been a lot of these sorts of mistakes over the last 18 months - rolling out “features” that are poorly executed and then making everyone wade through a ridiculous bug fixing quagmire instead of rolling it back and rethinking/testing it. What’s the thinking behind this approach?

AnneKipanki · 12/11/2020 22:49

I'd rather just turn it off .

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/11/2020 22:46

Thank you both

Now working again and I see this

@Blondeshavemorefun

I still have nothing -

no notifications

no red dot

No messages

We all want what you've got!

Tech team should be home from School by now so something may happen between now and bedtime . . .

I'm also finding that it doesn't work with bookmarks, it's landing me on either the first page of a thread or the top of the page my bookmark is on.
